Capcom has revealed that the release date of Onimusha: Way of the Sword has been moved up a few weeks from its original September 25 launch. Capcom also shared details about how pre-order bonuses for Onimusha: Way of the Sword would be affected by the company's decision.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first new title in Capcom's Onimusha series since the 2006 launch of Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams on the PS2. Although the first two Onimusha titles have received remasters on modern platforms, Capcom's hack-and-slash series has been largely dormant for over two decades. Along with other titles like Mega Man: Dual Override and the Okami sequel, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is part of Capcom's ongoing efforts to revive some of its older IPs.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is Launching Three Weeks Ahead of Time
Fans will not have to wait as long to get their hands on Capcom's next entry. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will now launch on Friday, September 4, three weeks ahead of the game's original release date of September 25. Capcom shared a short video to confirm the news, which showed the number 25 being cut down to 4. Capcom stated that pre-order bonuses for Onimusha: Way of the Sword will now become early adopter bonuses. The early adopter bonuses, which include a Lion Dog Charm and a Sealed Curse Sword Appearance, will be available until September 25. Capcom also said that the demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be updated to reflect the release date and early adopter changes.

In light of PlayStation's decision to stop manufacturing physical game copies, Capcom also quelled player concerns by stating that Onimusha: Way of the Sword would see a full physical release on all current-gen consoles. Ergo, PS5 and Xbox Series X copies will be printed on Blu-ray Discs, while the Switch 2 edition will be manufactured in Nintendo's Game-Key Card format. Despite the release date change, the starting pre-order price for Onimusha: Way of the Sword remains at $69.99 as of this writing.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is not the first 2026 game that Capcom has changed the release date for. Earlier this year, Capcom moved Pragmata up from its original April 24 launch date up to April 17. While Switch 2 players in Japan still had to wait until April 24 to buy the game, the move did not stop Pragmata from becoming one of Capcom's best-selling titles of the year so far. With Pragmata and Resident Evil Requiem each selling millions of copies worldwide, it remains to be seen if Onimusha: Way of the Sword will continue Capcom's hot streak.
Although Capcom moved up Onimusha: Way of the Sword to early September, it will still have to contend with other titles launching throughout the month. Onimusha: Way of the Sword joins other major September releases like Marvel's Wolverine and The Blood of Dawnwalker that will arrive in the first half of the month. As of this writing, Capcom's other major fall 2026 launch is Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, which will arrive on October 9.
