The part that enamored me the most about this movie was R. Lee Ermey's ability to just, for a lack of a better term, go fucking ham.

Full Metal Jacket (1987) Stanley Kubrick allowed R. Lee Ermey to just wing it, an act practically unheard of for Kubrick. Ermey was so good, Kubrick rarely needed more than three takes per scenes, another rarity. R. Lee Ermey became a legend in just 40 minutes of screen time.
