“Mabuhay” = “live” / “long life”
Whenever foreign invaders arrived in the Philippines, our ancestors pleaded so they could live (“gusto kong mabuhay”).
Eventually, the term evolved into a greeting for foreigners = “Welcome! Long life to you!”
