With Hollow Knight: Silksong on the horizon, after six long years of waiting for even the barest scrap of news, it finally seems like we'll be able to take Hornet on her adventure to the distant kingdom of Pharloom. As a sequel to Hollow Knight, it is unclear how much of the previous game will make its way into this title.
While the story may focus on a new protagonist, with a new threat, in a new location, the world and NPCs still exist, and there are plenty of opportunities to see some of our favorite characters return in Silksong. Some would even feel strange not joining Hornet on her journey, as they have every excuse.
Zote The Mighty
The failed older version of the Knight, Zote is perhaps one of the most beloved characters in the game, and would be a runner-up for deserving of his own sequel. Constantly bragging about his own importance, Zote is very much a fool without power, and ends up needing to be saved at every turn.
Despite this, Zote never loses his bravado and even attempts to claim the victories of the Knight, and it wouldn't be surprising if Hornet had to end up doing the same in Pharloom. Especially as a self-described traveler looking for fame and fortune, it would be surprising if he weren't in Silksong.
If we see Zote, it would be even better if he were joined by Bretta, his number one fan.
Quirrel
Quirrel is a warrior with one of the more complex histories among most of the NPCs you meet in Hollow Knight, as he aids the Knight in many ways throughout the game. Quirrel even has his own tie-in comic, giving more to his story, including a battle with Hornet in which she spares him, much in the same way as the Knight.
By the end of the game, Quirrel admits to feeling at peace, maskless and without his sword. However, he is never to be seen again, which begs the question of where he goes. It is very likely Quirrel leaves Hallownest for good, having learned everything they could from Monomon and seeking new adventures.
Cornifer
The lovely mapmaker with his ever-iconic glasses and scribbling quill, Cornifer, is perhaps the character that makes you the most excited to discover him, as his maps are a lifesaver in the maze-like Hallownest. Making it his life's purpose to be a mapmaker, and having mapped the entirety of Hallownest, where else to go but Pharloom?
Not only would Cornifer be a beloved character to see again, but mechanically, it makes sense, as he provides the player with information about the map. Even just hearing the familiar humming tune of this great adventurer would have me beelining straight for him.
Grubfather
The best side quest in Hollow Knight is freeing all the little grub friends, so that the kind, old patriarch grub can have all of his children return to him, for a significant reward. To players who successfully return all the little green dudes, it is usually a shock to witness that the Grubfather has apparently swallowed them all whole.
Although, thankfully, it appears that this is a natural part of the grub lifecycle, and hinted at through one of the charms, the grubs will turn into something called a grubberfly. While it is likely that the Grubfather dies as a part of this process, hopefully at least one little grubberfly can be spotted in Pharloom.
Sly
Who first appears as a harmless little fly about to be consumed by the Infection, Sly eventually reveals himself as a great nailsage, or basically a master swordsman. While the contradiction of a tiny bug wielding a massive nail is memorable, Sly as a boss is a rather difficult fight that cements him as one of the best NPCs.
Although Hornet technically uses a needle rather than a nail, the difference in the world of Hollow Knight might not matter, and a great nailsage could help her in her journey. Since Sly is also a traveling merchant, it just makes sense that he will need somewhere, and someone, to sell his wares to.
The Troupe
The best update for Hollow Knight came in the form of the Grimm Troupe, a traveling circus filled with shady characters, and one of the hardest boss fights in all of gaming. While Grimm himself is defeated by the Hollow Knight, if you choose the Ritual ending, the rest of the Troupe simply departs Hallownest.
Many of the other troupe members, especially Divine, the mantis lady who upgrades your fragile charms, are just as iconic as Grimm and could easily appear in Pharloom. They could even become a force for good this time around, having changed their tune, or have a new malevolent master.
In the Banishment ending for the Grimm Troupe, you help Brumm banish the troupe, which may well be canon.
Iselda
You can't have Cornifer without 'bapanada' herself, the merchant Iselda from Dirtmouth. Once a warrior herself before settling down to a quiet life, Iselda admits that being a merchant isn't all it is cracked up to be. She even worries about her husband and wishes he wouldn't be putting himself in danger so often.
Either working in a new shop in Pharloom or taking up her weapon once again, Iselda deserves to have a spotlight on her as much as Cornifer, if not more so, especially since she is one of the most frequented characters in Hollow Knight. Any other merchant is just going to get a major side-eye.
Seer
A character brought through the Hidden Dreams update, Seer is the last member of a tribe of moths that can access a dream realm. Since this dream mechanic and the realm itself don't appear to be unique to Hollow Nest, it would be strange if it doesn't appear in at least some capacity in Silksong.
The Seer herself also disappears if you complete her quest, and it is unclear whether she just stopped existing, transported to the dream realm, or was always some form of vision. In any version, Seer would be the best character to allow Hornet to have access to the dream mechanic and a sick, new needle.
