Tarantino is the kind of cinematographer who's always conscious of his place in the medium's history, fully enganging with classical tropes as techniques to push the movie's narrative, never gratuitously, as at the very least it's always a fully loving wink to past masters of the trade.
His novel based on the script for Once upon a time in Hollywood is a companion piece to the movie.
