  • Just because you *can* do everything as a consultant, doesn't mean you should. In fact, offering too much may be holding you back. "The more specific you can get, the easier it is to sell your services, to be known for something, to charge more.   • As AI rapidly reshapes the workforce, reinvention is key to keeping up — even if you’ve been doing your job for years. “What is remarkable about this moment is that you can literally say it's 10 to 25 times more productive to use a coding agent and do something than it was before,” says Sridhar Ramaswamy CEO of Snowflake. But that kind of acceleration comes with real challenges. Ramaswamy says, “ The problem right now is that AI is increasingly getting better at solving these minute problems that expert engineers used to be so good at.” So where does that leave these expert engineers and others who feel uncertain as AI absorbs parts of their job? “ It's a lot more right now about organizing work, and sort of coordinating it, and exercising an amount of judgement.   • Hot take 🔥Your vision board won’t save you. For years, we’ve been told to visualize the life we want: the dream house, the fancy car, the perfect job. But as Nir Eyal, author of “Beyond Belief,” explains, research shows that focusing on the outcome can actually reduce motivation. In experiments by psychologist Gabriele Oettingen, people were asked to vividly imagine the goals they wanted to achieve while connected to blood pressure monitors. Their blood pressure dropped. It was as if their brain was saying: You already made it. Relax. And afterward, they were less likely to do the things required to achieve the goal. The better approach is something called mental contrasting. Picture the goal. Then picture the obstacles in your way. That’s what athletes do. They don’t just imagine the win, they imagine what it will take to get there.     We treat our beliefs as truths. We’d be better served thinking of them as tools. This week on Hello Monday, I talked to Nir Eyal — author of Hooked and now Beyond Belief — about why the self-help industry has gotten belief completely backwards. We think of beliefs like facts: fixed, provable, something to defend. But Nir argues they're actually tools — and like any tool, the question isn't whether they're true. It's whether they're working. A few things that genuinely shifted how I think: → Helplessness is our default state. We aren't taught to be helpless — we're born that way. What we have to learn is hope. And agency. → Motivation is a triangle, not a straight line. Behavior + benefit + belief. If any corner collapses, you quit — no matter how badly you want the outcome. → You don't have to change your beliefs. You just have to collect more of them. Think Pokemon cards, not courtroom arguments. → Visualizing outcomes is actively harmful. (Yes, really. The research is not kind to vision boards.) This conversation surprised me.
