Richard Vanderford recently joined the Dow Jones Risk Journal podcast to discuss a major shift in the financial landscape: the U.S. government is officially putting prediction markets on notice. As these platforms expand from political forecasting into sports and geopolitics, they are attracting more than just capital—they are attracting intense scrutiny from the CFTC. Key takeaways: - Insider Trading is the New Focus: CFTC Director David Miller has signaled that authorities will pursue insider trading cases and criminal charges where information is misappropriated. - The "Misappropriation" Theory: In these novel markets, the risk often stems from individuals—like sports trainers or government insiders—using confidential knowledge to tip the scales. - A Regulatory Tug-of-War: There is an ongoing battle between federal regulators (who see derivatives) and state regulators (who see unlicensed gambling). - Integrity is Non-Negotiable: Whether it’s a wheat farmer or a quarterback, the markets only work if they are free of manipulation. Prediction markets are going mainstream, and with that comes the same level of scrutiny as any traditional financial arena. 🎧 Listen to the full episode of the Dow Jones Risk Journal for the deep dive: https://bit.ly/4ve60YU #PredictionMarkets #CFTC #RiskManagement #InsiderTrading #DJRiskJournal

In this week’s Dow Jones Risk Journal podcast, James Rundle, reporter for WSJ Pro Cybersecurity, discusses the Workforce Shift around AI and security: - Machine Speed vs. Human Speed: We’ve always relied on "humans in the loop," but AI attacks happen too fast for manual oversight. We’re facing a massive trust gap in system autonomy. - Skill Displacement: AI is automating the "to-do list" tasks in app security and vulnerability management, forcing a total repricing of human risk and roles. - The Speed of Anxiety: Unlike the slow migration to the Cloud, AI adoption is happening in real-time. Teams are building, deploying, and defending all at once. The takeaway? AI is a new dependency. We need to focus on empowering overstretched teams with pragmatic tools, not just adding layers of complexity. 🎧 Listen to the full breakdown on the Dow Jones Risk Journal: https://bit.ly/47thk9d #Cybersecurity #AI #FutureOfWork #RiskManagement #DJRiskJournal

This Dow Jones Risk Journal webinar and article certainly highlight current regulatory risks compliance teams should be aware of. #Workplace #Risk #Compliance #RegulatoryAffairs
Today, Dow Jones Risk Journal hosted a webinar on the risks surrounding debanking and I was fortunate to be able to draw on the expertise of Will Jauquet, a partner at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP who used to lead enforcement at the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency, and Eric T. Young, CAMS, ISO Compliance of Guidepost Solutions, who previously led compliance at BNP Paribas and other institutions. They analyzed the regulatory scrutiny now being brought to bear on debanking related to viewpoint discrimination and the risk that represents for financial institutions. Part of the response, Eric said, should be thorough documentation of any decisions to deny services. Richard Vanderford reported on the discussion in Risk Journal. #debanking #compliance

FinCEN warned banks yesterday to monitor for healthcare fraud. Max Fillion writes: Criminal rings across the world are using straw owners to establish shell companies and submit false billing claims to Medicare and other government insurance programs. The types of fraud in the article could occur at almost any company or in any industry: fraudulent billing via shell companies, acquisitions by shell companies to hide ownership, equipment supplier over billing schemes, kickbacks and bribery. #FinancialCrimes and #Corruption are proliferating. For the latest on healthcare fraud read the article https://bit.ly/3PJly6D in Dow Jones Risk Journal and keep up with fraud trends. #ABAC #RiskAndCompliance #ConflictOfInterest

The Strait of Hormuz Crisis is More Than Just Oil—It’s a Global Food Crisis. Sarah Fowler from Oxford Analytica from Dow Jones recently joined the Dow Jones Risk Journal podcast to discuss a critical, often-overlooked consequence of the current conflict: the "bottlenecking" of the world’s fertilizer supply. The Reality: ⚠️ 1/3 of global fertilizer passes through the Strait. With the passage closed, prices have already spiked by over 30%. ⚠️ Bad Timing: We are in the peak Northern Hemisphere planting window. Missing this window means lower yields and higher food prices globally. ⚠️ No Backups: Unlike oil, there are no strategic reserves for fertilizer. It has a short shelf life, and production can’t be restarted overnight. The Ripple Effect: This isn't just about economics; it’s about stability. Rising food costs historically lead to political unrest, particularly in the world's most vulnerable regions. We must look at which nations have the policy scope to act before a physical shortage becomes a humanitarian one. 🎧 Listen to the full episode of the Dow Jones Risk Journal for the deep dive: https://bit.ly/47thk9d #Geopolitics #FoodSecurity #RiskManagement #Fertilizer #DJRiskJournal
