If you've built in-app purchases across stores, you know the pain: a separate SDK, separate types, and separate purchase handling for every platform. I have installed VLC on every machine I've owned since high school in 2001, so it was a good day seeing the traffic cone app icon show up on my Fire TV's home screen 🥳 🎬 For context, Vega is the new Fire TV operating system my team and I support, and VLC is now available in Early Access. Jean-Baptiste Kempf (VideoLAN) has led VLC development since 2006 and wrote up how they got it there. The latest Fire TV Stick is the first device with VLC 4.0 running in production, even before the desktop release has shipped. His post's conclusion is the part I keep pointing people to: Porting VLC to a new operating system used to mean rebuilding the interface, the video stack and the audio stack from scratch. This one came down to a Qt platform plugin, a video decoder and an audio output, and they went from start to working build in under two months on Fire TV using their stack and our developer tools. I appreciate the post and tbh it's a stronger case for what we're building at Amazon Developer than I could write, especially coming from a dev team I've admired over 20 years.
