A new space for big ideas is coming to Boston. Opening October 10, the William and Charlotte Bloomberg Public Science Common at the Museum of Science will offer immersive, interactive scientific experiences—including deep dives into urgent issues like AI, climate change, and space exploration—and conversations with leading scientists.

🔬 In this thrilling era of scientific innovation, I can't think of four voices that need to be heard more than the folks on this proposed panel, Science Has the Answers. Is Anyone Listening? 🧬 We can sequence a genome in a day. 🌪️ We can predict a hurricane's path a week in advance. 🦠 We can see a pandemic coming. ❓ And yet public trust in science keeps falling, and the attention economy keeps rewarding whoever is loudest, not whoever is right. 🌎 The most urgent crisis in science isn't what we don't know. It's that the science we do know isn't landing. That's the problem this panel takes on — and we're not going to solve it by preaching to the choir or repeating "trust the science" one more time. This is a working session about a hard question: how do we make science matter to people? The time is now. If we want to build trust in any of the advances that are happening in our backyard here, using #AIforPublicGood at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and across the research enterprise everywhere, we have to share this message first. The National Academy of Sciences and the Smithsonian Institution recently celebrated the role of science in the past, present, and future of the United States' story at Revolutions in Science, a conference that The Kavli Foundation was proud to sponsor. The Vermont Complex Systems Institute (VCSI) at the University of Vermont recently hosted the 12th International Conference on Computational Social Science (IC2S2), bringing hundreds of researchers, students and practitioners from around the world to Burlington to explore how computational approaches can help us better understand—and address—the complexities of human society. The conference is the annual meeting of the International Society for Computational Social Science and has become a leading international forum for research at the intersection of computation and the social sciences. With the National Science Foundation's recent announcement that it would close down it's Social, Behavioral and Economic sciences directorate (the primary US source of funding for computational social science research), it is important to remain resilient and to share our work, and to seek out partners who want to fund and support it - because society needs this research in order to understand our rapidly changing world. We appreciate everyone who took part!

👍👍The U.S. National Science Foundation today released 12 new notices of funding opportunity (NOFOs) providing over $1.5 billion for foundational research, including basic and use-inspired inquiry across the sciences and engineering. These funding opportunities support the foremost goal in the administration's memorandum "Ushering in a New Golden Age of American Innovation: Fiscal Year 2028 Administration Research and Development Budget Priorities" which calls for investing in the foundational research that remains the bedrock of American science and technology leadership. They also deliver on a central premise of the report Science: A New Golden Age — that America must respond to the forces reshaping the scientific enterprise and create conditions in which exceptional science can occur more often and progress more rapidly. Rather than treating every research question alike, NSF will take a portfolio-based approach to federal grantmaking that deliberately matches funding mechanisms, institutional models, research modalities and grant durations to the character of the research. NOFOs announced today will support a mix of long-horizon awards for ambitious, transformative research and rapid short-term grants to quickly test promising ideas. NOFOs advance NSF's core mission to support foundational research that leads to scientific breakthroughs and opens new frontiers of knowledge. NSF investments in foundational research underpin technological innovation across industries, strengthening U.S. economic competitiveness, enhancing national security and improving quality of life for all Americans. The funding opportunities place particular emphasis on bold, paradigm-challenging inquiry, foundational research that forges new connections across disciplines, and projects that harness artificial intelligence, advanced computation and automation to make qualitatively new science possible.

Last night our Melbourne Campus welcomed Australia’s former Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel, for a critical discussion on the implications of generative-AI. The neuroscientist and inventor last year founded Proudly Human, the global certification for human-created content. Last month Proudly Human verified Maps of Hope, ACU’s landmark book exploring Pope Leo XIV’s reflections on education and AI, as human-authored. Dr Finkel joined ACU’s Associate Professor Xavier Symons and Professor Maeve Louise Heaney VDMF (GAICD) for a wide-ranging panel discussion moderated by our Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Zlatko Skrbis. The panel discussion event marked the official Australian launch of Maps of Hope following its launch at ACU’s Rome Campus in May. Maps of Hope was published in collaboration with the Vatican’s Dicastery for Culture and Education and is the first publication featuring remarks by a faith leader to be verified by as written by a human.
