In its first year, more than 80 apprentices have completed GE Aerospace’s newest apprenticeship program in Wilmington, North Carolina. Through training at Cape Fear Community College and hands-on experience at GE Aerospace’s Wilmington site, apprentices from different backgrounds are stepping into careers as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinists, helping deliver critical engine parts for our customers. What an exciting day for so many across GE Aerospace, NASA, BETA, and Boeing. It was inspiring to watch this morning’s public demonstration live from Farnborough at the GE Aerospace Research, where many of the enabling technologies powering the flight got their start!Layla Dowdy shared thisBREAKING NEWS: History made! GE Aerospace announced today a new industry first to advance hybrid electric flight, demonstrating the viability of more electric aircraft engine systems for commercial aviation. In collaboration with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, BETA TECHNOLOGIES, and Boeing, GE Aerospace recently conducted the first hybrid electric flight above 30,000 feet, reaching the same altitude levels of passenger commercial aircraft. The record-breaking test campaign was enabled by GE Aerospace’s fully integrated, megawatt-class, and multi-kilovolt hybrid electric propulsion system developed through NASA’s Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) project. Also featuring three 20-foot-tall aircraft windows, attendees will get a window seat view into defining moments in aviation, showcasing engines that have helped shape the fabric of American aviation and serve as the foundation for the future of flight.

The center offered a first look at the towering stack, ahead of moving hundreds of more artifacts and exhibits into the surrounding galleries. Layla Dowdy reacted on thisLayla Dowdy reacted on thisI loved Dolly before I even understood what a celebrity was. She was just Dolly — from the same little corner of East Tennessee I was, and somehow she felt like she belonged to us even when she belonged to the whole world. I grew up participating in her parade every year. My daddy preached at the chapel at Dollywood, where my brother, sister and I led the hymns. Her music, generosity, faith, and fierce love for where she came from were part of the fabric of my childhood. Dolly taught me something I didn’t fully appreciate until I grew up and left home: you can leave home without ever letting home leave you. She showed a little girl from Sevier County that you could dream impossibly big and go anywhere, while still carrying the mountains and people who raised you. Dolly became one of the most recognizable people in the world without distancing herself from the place that made her. She understood that success didn’t require becoming someone else. The things that made her unmistakably her — her roots, values, humor, and authenticity — became some of her greatest strengths. And she understood that what you do with success matters just as much as achieving it. Her impact can be measured in records and awards, but also in children who grew up with books because of the Imagination Library. In communities she quietly helped. In opportunities she created back home. And in generations she made feel seen and capable of dreaming bigger. Maybe that’s why she became woven through so many chapters of my own life. My bachelorette party was Dolly-themed. I danced with my daddy at my wedding to “From Here to the Moon and Back.” Her portrait hangs in my office. I cried when my son’s first Imagination Library book arrived. I even once started writing a book about her. Maybe one day I’ll pick it back up. And last year, I finally got to meet her. Through Make-A-Wish East Tennessee, I watched Dolly spend time with four Wish Kids and their families. She gave each her full attention. She made them laugh. She signed all of their swag. She sang “Jolene” and “9 to 5” with them. There was no performance in the way she cared for those families. She was simply kind. Present. Generous. Somehow, after a lifetime of looking up to her, she was even more wonderful than I imagined. I’ll forever be grateful I had the chance to tell her what she meant to me. There are people whose success makes them seem larger than life. Dolly’s gift was that the bigger her life became, the more determined she seemed to make other people’s lives a little better. She never forgot where she came from. And in doing so, she taught so many of us from that little corner of East Tennessee that where you come from doesn’t have to limit where you can go. It can be the foundation that carries you there. For this little girl from Sevier County, it feels like losing a piece of home. I will always love you, Dolly. 🤍

Layla Dowdy reacted on thisLayla Dowdy reacted on thisIts been almost exactly a year since our family made the big life decision to pick up our lives from the US and move back to the UK. This year has been filled with challenges and triumphs, both personally and professionally. International moves are not for the faint hearted but - they truly do build resiliency, new perspectives, and I would like to think a very full life! Professionally this year has been one of reflection and true growth. I left a job I absolutely loved at UNC Center for Galapagos Studies for the big unknown. After months of networking I secured an incredible role at a global NGO, Rainforest Foundation UK, as Head of External Relations and I will cherish my time there and know we will cross paths again. But - life continues to throw twists and turns and when a phenomenal opportunity back at University of Oxford hit my radar I had to explore further. I feel over the moon to be part of a truly impressive and global team at Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI), University of Oxford as their new Director, Development & Partnerships! OPHI is a small but mighty research centre that is working to eradicate global poverty. At the heart of OPHI’s work is a simple but powerful idea: poverty is about whether people have the real freedom to lead lives they have reason to value. This means not thinking about poverty as income alone, but instead the many variables that truly determine poverty - and how they overlap - such as health, education, access to clean water or electricity....I am eager to role my sleeves up, learn from these incredible academics and staff, and help deepen OPHI's impact and reach through creative partnerships and funding opportunities. Please reach out if you are interested in learning more, connecting in to OPHI's incredible work, or think creatively about how together we can have an even greater impact! In the meantime, I have loved getting back to Oxford - a place that has held a special place in my heart since 2010 when I first started working for the University a short 16 years ago. It is great to be back!

We had the pleasure of welcoming Tier 1 journalists to #JFWTC, Bengaluru for a special #Engine101 briefing, designed to offer a closer look at the advanced aircraft engine technologies powering today’s aviation industry, and how we stay focused on safety, reliability and durability to meet customer needs. What stood out most was the pride and passion; our engineering leaders made one of the world’s most complex machines feel accessible — from jet engine basics, rigorous testing processes to AI-enabled inspection & maintenance tech and innovation to advancing the #FutureOfFlight. It was a pleasure to host the journalists in person and see such strong curiosity and engagement throughout. Building understanding and relationships was our primary goal — the positive coverage is a welcome bonus. This is #GEAerospaceInIndia and #Bengaluru team at its best: deep technical expertise, thoughtful storytelling, and innovation grounded in customer impact.
