It's interesting as it is unsurprising that Sony is not yielding on this decision to end physical discs for PlayStation. Fans are definitely upset (and rightfully so), but I feel like for them to have an impact, they have to stick to their guns, not purchasing games or unsubscribing from their services for more than a week. It'd probably have to go on for a fiscal quarter (more of an impact if it happened during the holiday rush). With GTA VI around the corner, I doubt consumers en masse are going to have the patience or care enough to sit out of their ecosystem for that long. It is a bummer though. Curious to see how it affects PlayStation 6 sales whenever the console drops.
[Sony Ends Physical PlayStation Discs From 2028 — the Last Switch Flips] Sony confirmed that from January 2028, new PlayStation games will be digital-only. The official site now says so. The plan first surfaced in July 2026. The stronger placement on the site is the signal. Microsoft and Nintendo haven't followed yet. Digital share keeps climbing regardless. Collectors and the used-game market feel this first. The distribution era of gaming closes out. Is going digital-only a cost win for Sony, or does it hand the entire game market to a few storefronts? #Sony #PlayStation #Gaming

I don’t think gamers should lose the option to own physical copies of games and be able to play them without an internet connection at all. For one thing, I’m used to being able to buy a physical disc, and I genuinely like having it sitting on my shelf. And on top of that, I’ve been in plenty of situations where having a physical copy was actually super useful and convenient. If I’m paying $80–$100 for a game, I want to own it and not have to depend on outside factors just to play it. I don’t want to feel like I’m renting it.
PlayStation fans have launched a week-long #PSBlackout campaign in response to Sony's decision to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. Participants are being encouraged to avoid PlayStation Network activity, gaming sessions and purchases during the August 23–30 protest. Sony says the move reflects the industry's shift toward digital distribution, with new games released after January 2028 expected to be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and retailers. The change will not affect games that have already been released or those released before the 2028 cutoff. The backlash highlights a wider debate around digital ownership, game preservation and consumer choice as major entertainment platforms move away from physical media. For Sony, the challenge will be balancing the economics of digital distribution with the preferences of players who still value physical games. PlayStation’s disc decision turns game ownership into a platform strategy test Sony’s plan to end physical-disc production for new PlayStation games in 2028 is more than a format change: it tests trust, preservation, pricing, and the value of a platform ecosystem. PlayStation says physical disc production for new games releasing on its consoles will end in January 2028. Existing disc releases and their reorders are treated separately, but new titles will increasingly depend on digital distribution. The decision puts pricing, resale, access, preservation, and offline play at the center of the platform relationship.
