SK hynix has held a groundbreaking ceremony for an Indiana production base focused on high-bandwidth memory. The move connects a familiar AI story—accelerator demand—with the less visible physical work of manufacturing, packaging, testing, and supplying the memory that keeps those accelerators fed. A U.S. footprint also gives the company a way to bring part of that chain closer to customers building large AI systems. HBM is not just a faster memory chip. Its value comes from stacking dies and connecting them to processors with extremely wide interfaces, which makes packaging, thermal design, yield, and test central to system performance. As models grow, memory bandwidth and capacity can become as constraining as compute. Supply therefore depends on coordinated investment across wafers, advanced packaging, materials, and customer qualification. The Indiana project is a long-horizon capacity decision, not an instant fix for tight supply. It will take time to build, qualify, and ramp. Its importance is strategic: AI infrastructure is becoming regional and industrial, and memory vendors are competing on dependable delivery as much as on density. The important shift is from buying accelerators to co-designing the path from silicon through models, serving software, and products. Inference is now a production cost, not just a research benchmark. Every saved joule and millisecond can affect data-center capacity, user latency, and the price of putting an agent inside a real workflow. Custom silicon only matters if those gains survive compiler, memory, networking, and reliability constraints in large deployments. Navitas Semiconductor has agreed to acquire Claros in a transaction valued at up to approximately $232.8 million. Claros develops vertical power delivery and integrated voltage-regulator technology for the processors at the center of AI systems. The deal places power conversion beside the better-known AI bottlenecks of compute, memory, and networking. Modern accelerators draw large currents and change their demand quickly. Delivering power from the grid to the processor is therefore a chain of conversion, distribution, control, sensing, and thermal decisions. Every step consumes space and energy. Moving regulation closer to the package can reduce parasitics and improve response, but it also raises integration and validation demands. Navitas says the combination could extend its portfolio from high-voltage grid infrastructure to the xPU and more than double its 2030 serviceable addressable market to over $8 billion. Those are forward-looking company targets, not guaranteed results.
