I still can't believe more than a week has passed. It is impossible to put into words the profound impact this loss has had on my family, especially my parents. In a matter of moments, the life they built and cherished was reduced to ashes. They left with nothing but a box of pictures and the clothes on their backs, and when they returned, there was nothing left. My parents poured their blood, sweat, and tears to create a home filled with love and warmth. This was to be their forever home. Every improvement over the multi-decade span on the home was done by my father and uncle, with their own hands. Every corner of it carried a memory, a story, a moment of joy and togetherness. Decades of irreplaceable sentimental items are gone — family photos, heirlooms passed down from their parents, and the countless moments they shared and cherished together. What started as early budget discussions evolved through multiple design iterations, approvals, and close alignment with the project team, ultimately delivering a complete bulk storage solution tailored to the application. California Employers: Do you know about the “seventh consecutive day” rule when it comes to overtime pay? Most employers think they know everything they need to know about CA overtime rules: ✔️Time-and-a-half after 8 hours in a workday ✔️Time-and-a-half after 40 hours in a workweek ✔️Double time after 12 hours in a workday But many get caught off guard on the rare occasion that an employee works seven days in a row during the workweek. If an employee works seven consecutive days in a single workweek, you owe: ➡️ Time-and-a-half for the first 8 hours on that 7th day ➡️ Double time for any hours after 8 on that day Pro Tip: How you define your “workweek” matters. Get it wrong, and even payroll software won’t save you. Failing to follow this rule can lead to costly wage claims and penalties. Believe it or not, many HR pros forget about this overtime law - which means your employees could be getting paid incorrectly. Are your systems truly catching this, or are you rolling the dice?

Hiring became a process. Recruiting became survival. There’s a dangerous belief floating around: “We optimized hiring, so recruiting is fine.” SHRM’s 2025 Recruiting Executives Benchmarking shows a different story (2017 → 2022 → 2025). Executive hiring costs have surged (+113% vs 2017, +21% vs 2022). At the same time, only 20% of organizations track Quality of Hire. So we’re getting “efficient” at moving candidates through pipelines… while staying blind to the only question that matters: Did this hire ramp, perform, and stay? One-sentence diagnostic: What’s your definition of a “good hire,” and how do you measure it 90 days later? If that answer is unclear, your hiring system isn’t optimized. It’s just busy. If you’re an employer in California, here’s your reality check: what you don’t know can cost you and cost you big! We recently spoke with a manufacturer with less than 50 employees who paid over $200,000 on one meal break issue! These are the most common (and costly!) mistakes we see when working with new clients: 1) Misclassifying Employees as Independent Contractors - California uses the ABC Test, which makes true independent contractor status very limited. 2) Not Paying Daily Overtime - CA requires daily overtime after 8 hours 3) Failing to Provide Meal and Rest Breaks (with Proper Timing & Penalties) - Breaks must be timely, uninterrupted, and tracked. Missed breaks = 1 hour of premium pay. 4) Using Non-Compliant Offer Letters or Employee Handbooks - Generic templates often don’t align with California law and can backfire during audits or lawsuits. 5) Incorrect Final Paycheck Timing - In California, employees must be paid their final wages on their last day (if terminated or gave notice). 6) Not Tracking or Paying for All Hours Worked - Time spent checking emails or Slack after hours may count as compensable time - especially for non-exempt employees. 7) Failing to Reimburse for Business Expenses - CA law requires reimbursement for cell phones, home internet, mileage, and other work-related expenses. 8) Ignoring the Need for Harassment Prevention Training - All employers with 5+ employees must provide training every 2 years. 9) Skipping Written Policies for Leaves of Absence - CA’s leave laws are complex (CFRA, PDL, PSL, etc.). Not having a written policy opens you to risk. 10) Assuming At-Will Employment Means “No Risk” Termination - Wrongful termination claims can still be made based on retaliation, protected leave, or discrimination. 11) Failing to Conduct Regular HR Audits - Without routine checkups, noncompliance grows silently - until it becomes expensive. America HR | PAGA Reforms Are Already Delivering Results (18 Months After Implementation) California’s 2024 reforms to the Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA) are showing clearly positive outcomes for both employers and employees, according to a new report released by four of the state’s top employment law firms. Eighteen months after implementation, the data indicates faster resolutions, fewer frivolous claims, and stronger compliance across workplaces. Key Improvements (with Numbers Included) ● Employers Significantly Strengthening Compliance Companies are increasing internal audits, enhancing manager training, and updating policies proactively—resulting in reduced violation risks. ● Narrowed Standing = Fewer Frivolous Lawsuits Plaintiffs must now show they personally experienced a violation within the past 1 year, allowing many claims to be dismissed early. This narrows disputes and leads to faster, less costly resolutions. ● Employee Share of Penalties Increased from 25% → 35% The state now receives 65%, and workers receive a higher portion of penalties.
