SES-Intelsat merger clears final hurdle "July 11th saw the clearest indication that the long wait for SES Satellites to receive its permissions to acquire rival Intelsat is coming to an end, with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) giving its approval to the transfer “of the control of licenses from Intelsat to SES”. This, in effect, ends the FCC’s oversight of the deal. SES has already received approval for the deal from the UK and European regulators." So, the merger will go ahead, and this will change the set-up of the satellite industry. However, from a #video point of view, this is something that will not change the face of the industry, with satellite now competing with #IPTV as a means of delivery for channels. "The FCC said: “Based on our review of the record before us, we do not find any material public interest harms arising from the proposed transfers of control. Further, we find that the proposed transaction is likely to generate certain public interest benefits, including lower costs due to synergies and elimination of double marginalization, improved network quality, increased investment, national security benefits, and the creation of a more vigorous satellite competitor. Accordingly, we find that the transaction will serve the public interest, convenience, and necessity.“" "The document reveals that Eutelsat complained that the combined business “would control almost all satellite media distribution in the United States.” However, the Commission responded by saying that both Telesat and Eutelsat have contiguous US (CONUS) C-band coverage and substantial C-band satellite capacity available to serve media service customers." The idea around controlling satellite media distribution is a bit misleading, as media distribution is moving away from #traditionaltv distribution. Industry news: FCC Kicks Off Proceeding to Overhaul Satellite Licensing 🛰️📡 'The FCC voted to kick off two proceedings [last] Tuesday that will impact satellite licensing — one described as a licensing “overhaul” and another dealing with antennas in the upper microwave spectrum bands. 🚨 With the first rulemaking, the FCC is proposing a “licensing assembly line” that it says would dramatically accelerate decisions on applications for satellite systems. The FCC said it plans to rethink parts of the licensing paradigm like processing rounds and what modifications require new approval.  🚨 The second rulemaking looks to encourage more intensive use of the upper microwave spectrum bands and make licensing processes more efficient. The Satellite Industry Association put out a statement in support of the proposed rule changes, saying it plans to work with the FCC to finalize the rule changes.'
