The aim? To make ChatGPT feel more intuitive and effective across different tasks. ➡️But here’s the catch: The update overweighted short-term feedback signals, like thumbs-up responses, and ignored how users' needs evolve over time. The model started learning that being agreeable = being helpful. That led to sycophantic behavior ➡️That’s a problem. Especially when 500M people use ChatGPT weekly to explore ideas, make decisions, or get unstuck. ➡️Sam Altman and the team stepped in fast: 1. Rolled back the update to a prior version with more balanced behavior 2. Introduced new techniques to steer away from sycophancy in system prompts and training 3. Committed to realigning optimization with long-term user satisfaction, not just quick reactions 4. Promised expanded evaluations and more pre-deployment feedback loops 5.
