Patrick Lenihan shared thisI think about Ted Chiang's essay, "Catching Crumbs from the Table," truly every single day. Published (link in comments) in Nature, it's a short, speculative piece of fiction that predicts one day we mortals might just shuffle and cluck beneath gods of our own devising, unable to comprehend the world they build around us. Chiang might not have gotten the particulars ("metahumans") exactly right, but in principle (explainability, legibility, connection, meaning, purpose) we're nearly there, or there already. He gets into a whole parent/kid thing that I imagine hits heavy for anyone raising children with technology. What I wonder at is that a human mind (albeit a brilliant one) wrote this story 26 YEARS AGO. Could an LLM trained on Chiang and ingesting prediction market data do better? Maybe. Does it matter? Maybe not. Chiang's optimistic (but not Panglossian, thank you Dario for revivifying that one!) conclusion is essentially a good ol' "you never know". And we don't.

Patrick Lenihan reposted thisPatrick Lenihan reposted thisFractional AI has been acquired and will serve as the founding operational centerpiece of the new AI services venture focused on mid-sized companies. The new company is backed by Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, as well as Goldman Sachs, General Atlantic, Leonard Green & Partners (LGP), Apollo Global Management, Inc. GIC, and Sequoia Capital. Fractional was built on a few simple convictions: 1 - Non-AI companies will be the biggest winners from this wave of AI 2 - Closing the gap between the potential of AI and what actually goes into production requires exceptional engineering talent 3 - Now is the time to deploy elite engineers against the highest impact AI transformation opportunities Our belief in those convictions has only gotten stronger. We are excited to supercharge our ambition of building a leading AI-native services firm, combining Anthropic's frontier models and collaboration with their applied AI team with the depth of a world-class investor portfolio and our elite team of builders and engineers. To every client, partner, and team member who trusted us on this journey: thank you. The work only gets harder and more consequential from here, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Patrick Lenihan shared thisLast week I went with a reporter to see DOOMERS, an experimental play based on the weekend Sam Altman was booted from OpenAI. ChatGPT and Claude are both credited as the dramaturg. The show currently running at the Brooklyn Center for Theatre Research in Greenpoint, which looks like an old AIDS era artist loft (read: dingy, cool). It was a pretty interesting crowd! Suzy Weiss was there. She is not the reporter I was with. I will admit that we left at intermission, but mostly because my reporter friend and I both needed to be up before dawn for the next wave of AI news. What I take from the fact of this play, and from the content of its first half (which was not bad!) is that nothing is new. We might want things to be new, and AI sounds very new and crazy, but we have been struggling with how to reconcile ourselves to (the) god(s) since probably before fire. Everything is Prometheus. We are all Jacob and the angel. None of us knows if we’ll end up like Dr. Frankenstein. That existential narrative is ultimately the story playing out across the pixels of every news site, social network, and Substack on the planet today, to sat nothing of podcast audio. It was fun to see it performed in real life from the vantage of a metal folding chair. It was uncomfortable and the place smelled. It felt very human. Patrick Lenihan posted thisComms folks wondering what happened today here's the deal (IMO!): TLDR: Public markets lost value because participants are figuring out what R1 means for the future of AI. Markets will bounce back, probably big time. Full take: R1 is a foundational AI model from a Chinese technology company called DeepSeek. This model does inference reasoning (the part of AI that you use day-to-day) with a lot less compute than competitors and previous models. Basically: it's cheaper to run. There's other stuff re training costs but the significantly lower inference cost is the key point. Some version of R1 has been around since December but news of the current version and it's cost advantage drew attention at the end of last week. Public markets reacted today assuming the news means high value tech and infrastructure companies will make less money and are therefore less valuable. That's reactionary, and likely what the United States' geopolitical adversaries wanted, as there's a good chance the hype around this model is at least in part designed as a response to the Stargate AI infrastructure announcement last week. Satya Nadella, Jensen Huang, and Trump among many others have all by now said R1 represents a good thing, because it does. It means that (potentially much sooner than expected) we'll see greater development of AI at the application layer, where folks will build businesses (think, like ... apps, but they wont be apps) that previously would have been too expensive to build and run. You'll hear about Jevon's paradox, which says that (PR guy explanation): as tech becomes cheaper it attracts greater spend. How I think about it right or wrong is: cars were originally really expensive and then assembly lines made them cheaper and everyone got one and car companies made lots of money because more people could afford to buy them. So looking back, would you think the assembly line was going to be bad for the car industry? Books and printing press. Phones and apps. Lots of examples you can come up with. Of course everything is always more nuanced in reality. None of this is advice (!!!) but it's a good bet that tech -- AI software and the hardware it runs on and the energy and capital that fuel them -- will continue to grow in value. It just takes a minute for public markets to absorb the implications of innovation. The implications for geopolitics and for the open source model might be different stories. But for long term value creation, R1 is a good thing.

My favorite tidbit from the article: Chamberlain Group is using AI to create a digital doorman, a new product line they expect to generate $500 million in annual revenue by 2030. AI is already creating so much value in the economy. Thanks Mark Maurer for shining a light on it. https://lnkd.in/gZ2pcsvUPrivate Equity Is Deploying an Army of AI Wonks to Embed in the Firms They BackPrivate Equity Is Deploying an Army of AI Wonks to Embed in the Firms They Back

We started supporting the AI efforts at Chamberlain, the maker of LiftMaster garage-door openers, almost a year ago. They were also our first client for Ode with Anthropic. It's tremendous to see the progress. Congrats to CEO Jeffrey Meredith and the whole product and engineering team. And also to CMO Elina Vives who drove the 10x cheaper, 4x faster AI driven marketing efforts the article references. And to Andrew Cron and Matthew Katz of our Blackstone applied AI team. So much of our work is focused on growth and Mark Maurer's article highlights this really well. And "army of AI wonks" is growing on me. I might need to get it on a T-shirt. https://lnkd.in/eFf7TDuM

Patrick Lenihan reacted on thisPatrick Lenihan reacted on thisIt’s been a little over a month since I said goodbye to sabbatical life and stepped into my new role as Director of External Communications at Hinge. I’m a lover girl at heart. Working at a company whose entire mission is to help people find real, lasting love and connection feels like a natural next chapter for me. It’s also given me a lot to think about lately when it comes to what love actually means. Maya Angelou put it simply: “Love recognizes no barriers.” And bell hooks pushed that even further by arguing that love isn't just a feeling we fall into, but a practice. Something we choose, and act on, every day. Those are the kind of love stories I get to help tell now. I’m incredibly thankful to Jarryd Boyd (my rockstar manager!) Tamika Young (my phenomenal CMCO!)Gabbi Baker Andrea Mathias Marcela Madera Elaine C. and Starsky Eustache for being the most welcoming introduction to the amazing comms, marketing and business intelligence teams at Hinge, and I continue to learn so much from my awesome team Brianna Boone Elissa McCool Chrissy Correa and Talyr Hill every single day! Each of you has made this transition back to work so incredibly easy, and most of all fun. I’m grateful to have been given the space to take some much needed time off to rest and recharge, pour into my own creative projects, and rack up a few bylines of my own in the process (hey, EBONY!). To all my media friendlies, I promise you’ll be hearing from me soon! To those in the dating and relationship reporting space that I haven’t had the chance to meet yet, hi 👋🏾. I look forward to working together! And to all those who are still looking for their person, I hope I get to celebrate your #hingesuccessstory some day soon 💜

Our AI-Moderated Calls are a leap forward for expert research, compressing time-to-insight from days to hours, across time zones and languages, while maintaining the compliance rigor our clients and experts depend on. The Moderator probes for nuance, follows up on answers, adapts in real time, and processes qualitative and quantitative feedback simultaneously, expanding what's possible without sacrificing the depth or trust that matter. This new offering brings to life an important conviction for us at GLG: as trusted human expertise becomes more valuable, AI can make that intelligence more accessible and more scalable. We worked closely with both our clients and experts to build this new tool – and we're excited to keep innovating to empower them further as we reinvent the industry we invented.

Patrick Lenihan liked thisPatrick Lenihan liked thisProud to announce that Casper Studios is being acquired by Ode with Anthropic! We started Casper as a curiosity. We wanted to learn about AI and see how we can use the technology to help companies, people, and ourselves. It’s since turned into something more. Our ambition has grown. And that is why we’re being acquired by Ode! Ode is the joint venture started earlier this year with Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Sequoia Capital, and others, led by Chris Taylor and Eddie Siegel. We’ve looked up to Chris and Eddie since we started Casper. Chris and I would trade notes about AI services. I always admired their energy; they are some of the best technical folks I’ve met. We joked that we should maybe join forces at some point. Can’t believe that’s now happening. What’s the high-level thesis on the partnership? Ode is acquiring Casper to expand its ability to support clients’ AI transformation from end to end. Ode goes deep on its clients’ top AI priorities, building production-grade applications for an organization’s hardest AI challenges. Casper goes broad, helping deploy AI across teams and repeatable workflows, mainly on harnesses like Claude Chat, Code, and Cowork. Following the acquisition, Ode will be able to address more of the customer opportunity without moving away from the complex, custom work at the core of its business. Thank you so much to the Casper team, all our clients, and all the supporters in our audience who have connected us with people and helped our company reach this milestone. It feels like the constraints have now been lifted. The future is quite literally unbounded in terms of opportunity. So excited about what comes next.

Together they can now cover a vast range of AI needs, from custom engineering to working within the Anthropic harness with Claude Skills, Tag and Managed agents. We think this combination helps take companies off the use case treadmill and unlock the value of broad company-wide AI transformation. For an explainer on "harness" see my previous post. JPM's Erik Wytenus says Big Tech dominance is fading as market breadth broadens mathematically in 2026. AI drives new winners, discover diversification strategies for investors and leaders. Forget the Big Tech echo chamber. JPMorgan Private Bank's Erik Wytenus just dropped a bombshell on Bloomberg Television: market breadth is mathematically broadening in 2026, proving Big Tech is no longer the sole driver of gains. The phrase "broadening out" has buzzed for months, but Wytenus says the data confirms it, with artificial intelligence-fueled trades sparking rallies beyond the Magnificent Seven. This shift matters profoundly for business leaders, investors, and rising professionals chasing alpha in a post-AI boom world. For too long, portfolios rode Nvidia and pals to record highs, but over-reliance bred vulnerability, think 2022's tech rout.
