An emerging but still underappreciated area that has exciting potential to impact cancer patients is the study of the microbiome. That’s why last month I spearheaded City of Hope’s microbiome symposium that brought together our federal government’s top health officials with leading microbiome scientists and executives from the leading cancer centers to talk about how to accelerate this research moving forward. Sustained support for innovation like this is essential to ensure patients benefit when it matters most. Neal Kaufman liked thisNeal Kaufman liked thisI know this week is HIMSS and I cannot wait to hear from those of you who attended – but I need to take a moment to share my reflections on ViVE – because I left ViVE in Los Angeles energized! Part of that was because I did not have to leave a conference and fly home - it was simply great to see a major health innovation conference hosted in LA. The city showed well! And the more important source of my excitement is the quality of the event itself. Dialogues, panels, sessions had people genuinely engaged. The receptions were strong, the exhibit hall was active and thoughtfully designed, and the overall energy was exactly what you hope for when the digital health industry gathers. And importantly, as it was designed to be, there was a large presence from health systems and provider organizations -the people actually responsible for delivering care. To gather a clear perspective on ViVE 2026 and how the conference continues to evolve, I spoke with Keith Fraidenburg, MBA, President of CHIME, one of the organizations behind the conference. Keith emphasized that ViVE is built around a simple idea: focus on decision makers. “If you build an event around decision makers - and that includes the content - you’ll attract decision makers.” That approach was evident this year. Health system leaders are facing pressure: cybersecurity threats, financial constraints, staffing challenges, and rapidly evolving technology. Conferences like ViVE create an opportunity for leaders to compare notes and learn from each other. “The community leans in on each other when times are tough,” Keith told me. While AI was everywhere in the conversation, Keith noted that health system leaders were especially focused on practical applications- less hype and more real use cases. Other themes that reoccurred across the conference: - Technology platform consolidation - Health system M&A and integration challenges - Revenue cycle transformation - Cybersecurity Next year the conference moves to Nashville, and it will be interesting to see how it continues to evolve. Over the next 2 years, the HHS and CMS HAC will focus on providing recommendations that: (1) Develop actionable policy solutions to prevent and better manage chronic disease; (2) Advance accountability for safety and outcomes while reducing unnecessary administrative burden; (3) Expand the use of real-time data to support higher quality of care, speed up claims processing, and improve quality measurement; (4) Enhance care for vulnerable populations, including those served by Medicaid; and (5) Strengthen Medicare Advantage sustainability, including modernizing risk adjustment and quality measurement. Through our patient-governed boards and workforce of over 330,000, Community Health Centers (CHCs) serve more than 52 million patients—1 in 7 Americans, including 1 in 3 in rural America—delivering affordable, comprehensive, and effective primary and preventive care to patients in rural, urban, frontier, island, mountain, and suburban communities in over 17,000 locations across the nation. Not inevitable decline. The secret? A belief that improvement was possible. CMOs play a key role at #health systems and #hospitals when a crisis arises. Find out how a #CMO can respond to a crisis from Gregory Eberhart, MD, MMM, CPE, FACHE, the new CMO of California Hospital Medical Center, which is part of Dignity Health and CommonSpirit Health. First and foremost, a CMO must be a trusted source of information during a crisis, according to Eberhart. "A CMO must build that trust over time, so when crisis situations occur, they can be an advocate for the #medical staff," Eberhart says. A CMO must be intentional and respectful in building trust with a medical staff. "When you start in a CMO role, you cannot just tell people what to do," Eberhart says. "A new CMO needs to go to where #doctors and other clinical team members work to find out about their concerns and pain points. A new CMO should try to achieve quick wins and try to solve problems." Communication is an essential function for a CMO during a crisis, including listening to the concerns of the medical staff and taking those concerns to the executive leadership team effectively, Eberhart explains. "This requires two-way communication," Eberhart says. "A CMO must not only communicate the medical staff's concerns to senior leaders but also circle back to the medical staff and clinical staff in general.
