Monica DeLardi posted thisReceived this tidbit in my email this week from NielsenIQ Beauty Insights: Amazon is now the #1 US Beauty Retailer, consistently delivering year over year sales growth. Amazon’s current market share of Total Beauty also continues to expand, most notably at the expense of DTC, Drug, and Mass. All Beauty categories are contributing to Amazon’s consumer consumption gains; growth rates in Face Care, Bath & Shower, HBL, Fragrances, Deodorant, and Sun Care are currently outpacing that of Total Beauty. Several key trends stand out in the Nielsen insights: 📈 Demographics Are Shifting – Growth is fueled by older, high-income, and diverse households, signaling broadening appeal beyond younger, digital-native shoppers. 💡 Mass & Masstige Lead the Way – The biggest beauty winners on Amazon are accessible, high-value brands, reinforcing that convenience and price sensitivity are major purchase drivers. 🔄 Retention & Migration Are Key – Not only are retained Beauty buyers spending more on Amazon, but consumers are shifting away from other retailers—especially Beauty Specialty and Mass—in favor of Amazon’s selection, pricing, and fast delivery. 📦 Subscriptions & Events Drive Loyalty – With 12% of Amazon’s Beauty orders coming from subscriptions and 36MM buyers engaged, repeat purchasing is surging. Prime Day is another major accelerator, with Beauty sales up +20.6% YoY in October, led by Skin Care and Fragrances (of course, promotional events are always key sales drivers). What this means for brands: ✔ Optimized presence on Amazon is essential – With shifting consumer habits, brands must refine their product listings, SEO strategies, and advertising spend to remain competitive. ✔ Subscription & loyalty strategies matter – Leveraging Subscribe & Save or exclusive promotions can help drive repeat purchases and increase customer lifetime value. ✔ DTC & Specialty Retailers must adapt – With Amazon pulling share from these channels, brands need to create unique value propositions through exclusive offerings, personalized experiences, and content-driven engagement. Amazon’s rise in Beauty isn’t just about convenience—it’s about how consumer behaviors are evolving. The environmental impact of returns is staggering, especially in the beauty industry, where packaging, transportation, and excess inventory pile up. Here’s why we should care: ♻️ Environmental Consequences of Returns: Carbon Footprint: Every return requires transportation — shipping products back to warehouses often means extra carbon emissions. In fact, returning one product can produce as much CO2 as driving 10 miles! 🚗💨 Product and Packaging Waste: Most beauty products, once returned, can no longer be resold. Unsold and unused products are often thrown away, contributing to waste and resource depletion. 🌿 What Can Beauty Brands Do? Accurate Product Descriptions: Help customers make informed decisions with detailed product descriptions, instructional videos, clear messaging, ingredients lists, and realistic swatches. Virtual Try-Ons: Incorporate AI-driven tools and virtual try-on apps to give customers a better sense of how products will look and feel before buying. Smarter Inventory Management: Minimize overproduction by using data-driven insights to better understand customer preferences, reducing the likelihood of returns in the first place. I haven't been able to say that often lately, because most days I spend searching and applying for jobs, networking/reaching out to people and hoping not to bother them. But today I took the morning off. My girls have off this week (I know most schools were off last week,) and we decided to go to Turtle Back Zoo in New Jersey. For a couple of hours I was distracted by animals and nature and it felt great to walk around, be outside and watch my teenage daughters' faces light up like they were little kids again. I'm posting this as a reminder to be kind to yourself and take a break from the searching, applying and networking. Get outside and do something that will make you smile. It definitely helped put me in a better head space! Have a great day everyone.
