Glenn Moss shared thisI've worked with and known Emil for a long time, since my days with Court TV. His experience with and knowledge of the evolution of digital media, content production, SaaS and AI is well earned. He knows how to apply the benefits of AI to content creators and producers in directly useful and productive ways.Glenn Moss shared this‼️ Most [AI] consultants sell you a roadmap. ‼️ ✅ Slide decks. Maturity models. A neat little framework you'll never implement. Then they wish you luck and send an invoice. ✅ Here's the uncomfortable truth about AI consulting in media and entertainment right now: 87% of creators are already using AI. The question stopped being "should I adopt?" about two years ago. The real question, the one most consultants aren't equipped to answer, is "why does my AI stack feel like it's creating more work, not less?" 🧭 That question doesn't get solved with a roadmap. It gets solved by someone who's already built the road and filled unexpected potholes. ✅ I spent decades in Media & Entertainment leading teams through technology transitions that looked clean on a roadmap and felt like chaos in real life; analog to digital, on-prem server rooms to cloud. Not only the strategy part. The "nothing works right before a major live event" panic mode part too. True story, almost got me fired. 🧭 So when I turned my attention to AI for creators and indie studios, I didn't write a white paper about it. I built 16 workflows that actually run. Budget forecasting. Script analysis. Rights clearance. Content strategy. The operational stuff that buries small teams. ✅ Not because I'm trying to sell software. I'm not. Because the only way to advise someone on what works is to have already done the work yourself. 🚧 That's the difference between selling a map and paving the road. 🟢 Manage Less. Glenn Moss shared thisWarning shot across the NFL multiplatform distribution bow. With this FCC already in fact and information gathering mode about sports rights, distribution and consumer impact, combined with the aggressive regulatory stance of FCC Chair Carr, the NFL should take these statements seriously. While it is in Congressional power to review and modify antitrust exemptions, the shift of more NFL games to more streaming platforms has resulted in increased political and regulatory focus on the impact of consumer access and cost. The cost of NFL rights and availability of games on broadcast has significant impact on broadcast economics and the FCC has reach there. So, projections and plans for additional NFL streaming are not a given and will likely be more complicated and maybe tempered. https://lnkd.in/eagce5KFFCC chair warns NFL that increase in streaming could "collapse" antitrust exemptionFCC chair warns NFL that increase in streaming could "collapse" antitrust exemption

Glenn Moss reacted on thisGlenn Moss reacted on thisPainfully aware. Same, honestly. Here's the thing nobody outside of public health fully understands: we know the job isn't 9-to-5. We signed up for that. When there's a boil water advisory, a disease outbreak, a hurricane bearing down on a community that needs clear information to survive — we show up. Nights, weekends, holidays. No question. That's the mission. And most of us genuinely love that part of it. But that doesn't mean we have to sacrifice ourselves for a mission that doesn't always love us back. This week marks roughly one year since thousands of public health professionals — many of whom spent years on the front lines of a global pandemic — got a termination notice from an agency they had given everything to. That loss deserves to be named. Those weren't just jobs. They were decades of institutional knowledge, community relationships, and hard-won credibility that took generations to build. The field is still absorbing that. Which makes this conversation more urgent, not less. Public health needs the people who are left to still be standing in year 10. It means protecting your capacity not as a luxury, but as a professional responsibility. The mission is worth fighting for. You have to be too.

Glenn Moss reacted on thisGlenn Moss reacted on thisHow rare is ad-free streaming becoming and why does it matter? That question prompted me to dive deeper. I found there's a wide range in how subscription streaming services wield their ad plans. For Peacock and Prime Video, nearly every viewer is getting ads. For Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max, most people aren't seeing ads. The likelihood of leaning heavily on ads varies as widely as audience sizes among streamers. About three-fourths of US streaming subscribers pay for an ad-supported plan and that share is growing. But that's just part of the story. Even when people pay for an ad free plan, they'll still see ads during live sports. Additionally, increased time spent on YouTube and FASTs means increases in the number of people regularly seeing streaming ads. In other words, the ad-free viewer is becoming more of a hypothetical figure than a real-life example. Why does the focus on ad tiers matter? For years, it was reported that users on ad tiers drove higher ARPU than ad-free users. Then, ad-free plans became more expensive, and more users flocked to ad-supported plans, which increased the ad supply and drove down CPMs. These trends have made it more challenging for streaming services to derive more revenues from ad-supported viewers than from ad-free ones. Check out Netflix's latest earnings where they acknowledged their ad tier generates less revenue per member than their ad free tier. For streaming services to drive higher ARPU from ad-supported plans than ad-free plans, time spent is crucial. Casual viewers who spend little time on an ad-supported subscription streaming service will produce less revenues than ad-free users. An ad-supported user must be regularly engaged with the platform to become a more profitable user than an ad-free one.

In 2015, I had to leave my job in New York after being unable to secure a work visa. It was a difficult moment, and for a long time I wasn’t sure if I’d have another opportunity to return. Nearly 10 years later, I found myself going through that process again. It was no small undertaking, but that makes this moment all the more meaningful. I’m grateful to have made it through and excited to begin this next chapter at Wizards. This move wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of our legal team. I want to especially thank Joel Emans and Elizabeth W. for their dedication and persistence—navigating internal processes, preparing extensive documentation, and even taking 6am calls with immigration counsel over several months to keep things moving. I don’t take any of this for granted, and I’ll do my best to ensure this move creates meaningful impact for the team. America, I’m back. Looking forward to reconnecting with friends and colleagues—it’s been a long time coming.

It's great to read opinion pieces by two very knowledgeable advocates for which technology broadcasters should move to for the future. Both sides make some fine points and both sides are promoting some yet to be realized implementations. In my opinion, there is no doubt that 5G Broadcast will eventually show up in cellular devices but to Mark Aitken's point, its not there yet so for broadcasters to commit to it at this point seems like starting over for NextGen TV, a very catch marketing term that could include 5G Broadcast as well as ATSC 3.0. While 5G Broadcast has yet to actually be deployed, ATSC 3.0 is up and running in many markets and receivers are already showing up in televisions and outboard devices. As I write this I am looking at four STB's and a couple of HDMI dongles that all receive ATSC 3.0, albeit some better than others. However, the truth about ATSC 3.0 is that while it is deployed in many markets, the current limitation of the deployment are hampering the group owners and local broadcasters from really taking advantage of the enhanced capabilities within the service. Keeping ATSC 1.0 operational with simulcast requirements and no clear transition plan is already eroding confidence and may eventually stall the transition entirely. For broadcasters to flourish in the future, bold steps will be necessary and if government regulations continue to limit which steps can be taken, 5G Broadcast may end up catching up to ATSC 3.0 implementation and while there are a lot of television receivers out there, that number pales in comparison to the number of mobile receivers, and the increased turnover rate of mobile receiver. Mark Aitken makes and excellent point regarding the technical superiority of ATSC 3.0 to 5G Broadcast that is well supported by the analysis from Brazil. The fact that 5G Broadcast didn't make the cut for the top two standards should be a concern for the proponents of 5G Broadcast. However the deciding factor on the future are the consumers and end users and convenience and ease of use trumps all but the most notable technical limitations. Anyone reading this that is old enough to remember when VCRs were first deployed for consumers there were two standards, Beta and VHS. When it came to video and audio quality, Beta was the superior format yet VHS was the overwhelming choice of the consumer. VHS's audio and video deficiencies, while real, weren't enough to trump the convivence of 2 hour tapes compared to Beta's 90 minutes limit. Given where we are in the process, I think we're going to see deployments of both technologies in the next couple of years. I'm not sure if one will ultimately kill off the other or not but as I have said many times in the past, I never thought broadcasting was the business, just a methodology. Content is what consumers and end users want and the smart content creators, whether local, national, or global will make sure that their content is consumable via all distribution methodologies.

The power dynamic between major broadcast networks and their local affiliates is a constant source of tension. ICYMI, Jeff Westling wrote in an op-ed for TV Technology about how the current FCC media ownership rules actually weaken independent broadcasters. Jeffrey argues that lifting the national market cap would allow independent broadcast groups to achieve the scale necessary to negotiate on fairer terms with networks. This would give them more control over the content they air and provide a meaningful check on network power, ultimately benefiting local communities. Does #MXL replace SMPTE ST 2110? NO!! During one IABM Technology & Trends Roadmap working group calls, it was clear that many of us kept hearing incorrectly that MXL (Media eXchange Layer) is a replacement for ST 2110. While at the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) event this week in New York, I asked Felix Poulin from CBC/Radio-Canada and Vincent Trussart from Grass Valley to help clear this up. Thanks to Felix for providing a clear drawing! Help to get this detail out by reposting and sharing with your peer groups. Not so super Frank C. seems to never get the facts straight. Let''s take the time to review his latest 'drivel' 🧱 FACT CHECK: Setting the Record Straight on “5G Broadcast vs ATSC 3.0” 1️⃣ “5G Broadcast is advancing globally while ATSC 3.0 struggles.” ❌False. ATSC 3.0 is deployed in more countries and more receiver types than 5G Broadcast. Fact: ATSC 3.0 is on-air across the U.S., South Korea, Jamaica, and Brazil (TV 3.0), with additional trials in Canada, India, Mexico, and multiple European markets. Meanwhile, there are no nationwide 5G Broadcast deployments anywhere—only isolated MNO pilots in Germany, Austria, and China. 2️⃣ “ATSC 3.0 can’t be received on phones.” ❌Completely outdated. Fact: ATSC 3.0 reception is active on feature phones, smartphones, tablets, USB-C dongles, gateways, and TVs from multiple vendors. The ecosystem includes Saankhya/Tejas, MediaTek, SiliconDust, and others—commercial hardware, not prototypes. 3️⃣ “5G Broadcast is the only global standard (3GPP).” ❌ Misleading. Fact: ATSC 3.0 is an ITU-recognized international broadcast standard (BT.2037, BT.1877)—same global recognition level as DVB-T2 or ISDB-T. ATSC 3.0 is also natively IP, fully interoperable with 3GPP systems (that’s the foundation of B2X – Broadcast-to-Everything). 4️⃣ “Release 18 feMBMS is a game-changer.” ❌Hardly. Fact: Release 18 adds incremental improvements—larger guard intervals, extended SFN support, and optional return path—but it remains dependent on operator spectrum and core integration. ATSC 3.0 already exceeds feMBMS throughput, spectral efficiency, and modulation flexibility, operating independently in broadcast bands and enabling one-to-many delivery without network load. 5️⃣ “Brazil will also implement 5G Broadcast to complement TV 3.0.” ❌ Blatantly false. Fact: Brazil’s SBTVD Forum explicitly rejected 5G Broadcast for terrestrial TV services. TV 3.0 is based on ATSC 3.0 physical layer technology. The separate MNO-led study on mobile use cases is not part of TV 3.0 and has no official adoption. 6️⃣ “India is aligning with 5G Broadcast.” ❌ Misrepresented. Fact: India’s D2M (Direct-to-Mobile) initiative is ATSC 3.0-centric, jointly developed by Prasar Bharati, IIT Kanpur, and Saankhya Labs. Government agencies recognize ATSC 3.0 as the technical basis for large-scale D2M deployment. 7️⃣ “ATSC 3.0 is its own worst enemy.” ❌Wrong again. Fact: ATSC 3.0 is the only broadcast system proven to deliver UHD, HDR, datacasting, emergency alerts, and IP services at scale—while converging with telecom and satellite systems in real deployments. The global momentum speaks for itself—ATSC 3.0 is the broadcast foundation for the connected world. 🔧 Bottom Line feMBMS is a network feature. ATSC 3.0 is a full system. ATSC 3.0 delivers broadcast-grade performance today—independent, interoperable, and global. The world isn’t “swimming against the current.” It’s following the current—and that current flows through ATSC 3.0.

The digital switchover in the radio industry demands careful consideration, while the discussions between industry stakeholders, mobile manufacturers, and policymakers are ongoing, I believe it's essential to get it right. Transitioning from terrestrial to digital is beyond technology. Ensuring availability, scale, and policy clarity is what is going to drive the industry forward. With a vast audience of 20 crore listeners for private FM , I think a gradual shift makes sense where digital and analog radio can coexist for a while, perhaps for the next five years. If we can strike the right balance, digital radio can bring significant benefits, including measurement data and new opportunities. It has to be a level playing field, a viable solution and a win-win for everyone. This article goes into the depths of the current need to address the process of the 2025 Digital Radio Rollout. Definitely worth a read. Red FM Akanksha Nagar https://lnkd.in/g3WuVj3E

Broadcasters are being moved away from C-band satellite services primarily to make room for next-generation 5G wireless services. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is repurposing this spectrum because its mid-band frequencies are ideal for the capacity and coverage required by 5G. Key reasons for this transition in 2026 include: 1. Expanding 5G and 6G Infrastructure. Spectrum Scarcity: To meet the tripling demand for wireless broadband, the FCC is clearing the "Upper C-band" (3.98–4.2 GHz) to alleviate a "mid-band spectrum deficit". 2. Government Mandate: Recent 2025 legislation requires the FCC to auction at least 100 MHz of the Upper C-band for terrestrial wireless use by July 2027. 3. Economic Goals: FCC Chair Brendan Carr has stated that freeing up this spectrum is a core pillar to drive job creation, competition, and technological leadership in 5G and 6G. FCC to Repeal 98 Outdated Broadcast Rules and Requirements The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has repealed 98 broadcast-related rules and requirements deemed obsolete or unnecessary, as part of its ongoing effort to reduce regulatory burdens under the "In re: Delete, Delete, Delete" docket. The rules eliminated in today's action date back as far as the 1970s and include provisions governing outdated technologies such as legacy radio testing equipment. The FCC said the repealed rules no longer serve the public interest, are no longer used in practice by broadcasters or the Commission, or have been surpassed by technological advances in the media marketplace. "This decision reflects our commitment to modernizing the FCC's regulatory framework and clearing away legal clutter that no longer has any practical relevance," the Commission stated. The repeals were enacted through a streamlined "Direct Final Rule" process, which allows the Commission to eliminate obsolete rules without undergoing years of legal proceedings. At its July meeting, the FCC used the same process to repeal rules related to telegraph services, rabbit-ear TV antennas, and phone booths.
