Last week I posted an excellent piece by The Information on a new phenomenon I've been observing: seed-strapping. This is when a startup will only raise a single round of funding. The one-round trend stands against the alternative of raising multiple funding rounds by default. Since then, the concept has been covered by CNBC (h/t Ernestine S.), NBC News and The New York Times. What I love about seed-strapping is that it merges advances in AI, a VC startup's ambition, and a Camel philosophy. In this week's edition, I wanted to dive into this further. What does a seed-strapped camel look like? What are real examples? When does it work and when should it be avoided? Seed-strapping clearly won’t be the right path for every startup. A one-size fits all model just doesn’t work. For example, certain capital-intensive industries like Hardware, Biotech, DeepTech, and next-gen infrastructure require upfront investment to get off the ground. These companies often need more than just a small seed round. But, as we adapt to a new era of entrepreneurship, one thing is clear: for those for whom this model applies, treating every fundraise as if it’s the last is leading to smarter, more sustainable businesses.

Max Harrison reposted thisMax Harrison reposted thisStartups are risky. "Approximately nine in 10 shut down. But those failures rarely attract the attention of the broader public. They tend to happen early in a startup’s life—when the people who run it are still in trial-and-error mode. As a company gets bigger and achieves enticing revenue growth, it gets more love from some of the thousands of thick-pocketed venture capital firms that write checks so companies can scale quickly. As those investors pour in more and more capital, failures become less frequent. Or at least they used to." The saga of Convoy, a once-glorified freight network company encapsulates this shifting landscape. Initially, Convoy's innovative approach to making supply chains more efficient, backed by over $1 billion in funding, set them on a path of rapid growth. However, by the end of 2022, this unicorn's financial burdens from blitzscaling unsutainable unit economics led to its collapse. This narrative reflects a broader trend in the tech startup ecosystem. "Health startup Olive AI shut down in October. Design startup InVision said it would discontinue its business in January. Modular building company Veev announced a shutdown in November. Of course, there was the high-profile, scandalous blowup of the crypto exchange FTX, which shut down in 2022. But much of the pullback has been quietly playing out behind the scenes." Many companies have quietly raised more punitive rounds, sometimes keeping valuation flat (e.g. convertible notes) so I expect we'll see more stories like this in 2024 unfortunately. I'm obviously biased towards #Camels which prioritize sustainable unit economics, manage burn and take a long-term outlook (link in comments). But this is the first time I have heard of #unicorpses. Max Harrison liked thisEventful few days to say the least! Turned 28 this week, hit my two-year mark at Wischoff Ventures, and was promoted to Principal. This past year came with a ton of professional growth: leading my own deals for the first time, understanding what it really means to be resourceful by helping dozens of portfolio companies with everything under the sun, building relationships with hundreds of incredible founders and VCs who I’m now lucky to call friends, learning how to pitch to LPs, and continuing to double down on our NYC & SF presence by bringing together some of the best people in the industry. Not everything about this year was perfect, but I feel lucky to be in an environment where I can learn from my mistakes and continue pushing forward. Thank you, Nichole Wischoff, for teaching me that trust is earned, not given, and for continuing to be a great mentor along the way. Max Harrison liked thisMax Harrison liked thisMy last post on ARR blew up my DMs. The metric everyone wanted next: gross margin. So I went back to the VCs who brought it up and asked what they look at underneath the number. Talked to some founders too, about how they calculate it in practice. Here's what surfaced. Token consumers and token producers are playing completely different games. If you're building an application, margin should be weak early and climb as pricing power kicks in. If you're a neocloud, gross margin barely matters, debt schedules and depreciation assumptions tell you more. There's also the FDE question nobody agrees on. Forward-deployed engineers get bucketed into COGS or OpEx depending on who's doing the books, and that one choice can move the number a lot. What people care about is why they're there. Are they speeding up revenue, or are customers only buying because you throw bodies at implementation? Not everyone thinks the metric is broken. One founder pushed back hard: headline gross margin is still a solid read on willingness to pay, as long as you're classifying costs the same way every time. Great overview of the Florida VC ecosystem 👇 What stands out is not just the ~$2.85B raised, but how distributed and specialized each region is becoming. • South Florida → crypto, fintech, LatAm access • Tampa Bay → strong early-stage pipeline • Orlando/Space Coast → deep tech, defense, space • North Florida → emerging operator-led funds Tax advantages help, but the real story is growing density of founders, angels, and operators building locally. South Florida's climatetech startups in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area have made significant strides, raising $391.3 million across 11 VC deals in the first half of 2025. This achievement already surpasses the total funding of $320.4 million from 27 deals in all of 2024, as highlighted in Emerge Americas' report.
