Mat Honan reposted thisMat Honan reposted thisFreelance #WritingOpportunity: MIT Technology Review is seeking pitches for an upcoming print issue. The theme is Kids. We're looking for pitches for longer pieces: narrative features, compelling investigations, essential profiles, and super-sharp essays. Please note we cast a wide net with these themes. Whatever the idea, we’re looking for strong stories with a clear technology angle. *This call is aimed primarily at journalists*, but if you're an expert with an incisive idea, please feel free to reach out. The pitch deadline is Friday April 3. If you haven't seen it yet, please review our pitch guide (https://lnkd.in/ghW8vbiT). Mat Honan reposted thisMat Honan reposted thisDavos Log File Day 1: Mountains, Minds, and Meaningful Connections 🏔️ Stepping into Davos for the first time this year during the World Economic Forum, I was curious what to expect in a so fragmented world where dialogue is more than needed. As traveling by train, I found the Bloomberg WEF daily briefings (available in the WEF Forum Live App if you are registered participant) to be an incredible start. If you’re looking for a sharp, concise way to stay informed, I highly recommend their podcast as well available on any major platform. https://lnkd.in/eNSUNA76 My Highlights from a busy Day 1: • Women in AI Breakfast: A huge thank you to the AI House Davos for the networking session broadening perspectives and tapping into new ideas. Beyond the brilliant networking, a special shout-out to tastelab zurich for the delicious snacks that fueled our conversations! • Most insightful session was for me on protecting what’s human, Creativity and Identity in the Age of Memes and Deepfakes Thank you, Nicholas Thompson, and the panelists Mat Honan, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and Emi Kusano for the critical and humorous insights. I must admit, I was particularly fascinated and distracted by Emi’s, little emotional support AI ✨ • We ended the day at the AMERON Davos Swiss Hotel for the World Women Leaders reception. Reconnecting with former colleagues and meeting so many inspiring women working for shaping a positive future. Looking ahead to Day 2: Today is extra special for me. For the first time, I am joined by my daughter. I am so excited for her to experience the unique spirit of the mountains and the energy of this special place. Mat Honan reposted thisMat Honan reposted thisI'm honored to report this important story for the first issue of Nature Health, the newest journal in the Nature Portfolio: https://lnkd.in/d4UGVWyY In 2025, there was a lot of talk about the devastating US aid cuts for health in Africa and how to reimagine global health. But when you ask, who will pay for global health going forward, nobody seems to know. I examined the financing crisis facing global health and how African leaders are rethinking dependence on international donors toward a more sustainable, self-reliant funding mechanisms. Political will in Africa is essential, not just money. “If the presidents are not involved and committed, you cannot get it done,” Magda Robalo, the former minister of health of Guinea-Bissau told me. Many thanks to the dozen of global health leaders + researchers who talked to me. Mat Honan reposted thisMat Honan reposted thisAI has a power problem and data centers have an approval problem. Why are data centers suddenly so controversial? After two weeks immersed in AI, starting with participating in the New York Energy Forum panel “AI Shaping the Global Future: Geopolitics, Macroeconomics and Energy” to leading a 3-day program on AI leadership in Abu Dhabi, the issues of power, infrastructure, scale and politics were common themes. Two must read pieces reinforced: • A smart MIT Technology Review essay by Mat Honan on the growing backlash against data centers ⬇️ • New Bloomberg reporting by Josh Saul, Leonardo Nicoletti, Demetrios Pogkas, Dina Bass and Naureen S. Malik showing sharp electricity price increases near major data-center hubs Both point to something bigger. Data centers have moved from background infrastructure to the backbone of U.S. growth. And once infrastructure becomes visible and critical, it becomes political. In this week’s Energy Common Sense, I explore: ▪️ Why AI has pushed data centers from megawatts to gigawatts ▪️ Why electricity is becoming the binding constraint ▪️ Why rising power bills and local opposition are accelerating ▪️ And why getting this wrong risks U.S. economic competitiveness in the AI race This isn’t about defending data centers or dismissing community concerns. It’s about understanding what’s actually happening and why it matters now and a lot. Mat Honan shared thisEvery year since 2001, MIT Technology Review has published a list of 10 Breakthrough Technologies. These are technologies we feel are poised to change the world. We spend months working on the list, batting around ideas, haggling over which entires should make the cut, and having lots of good-natured arguments. It's a really fun, thoughtful process and forces us to focus on the biggest changes happening in tech. It's out in the world today, and I'm so happy for you to get to see it. Let me know what you think? https://lnkd.in/gJgxefWs #ai #biotech #climate #energy #space

I'm a very, very proud boss and colleague, and consider myself incredibly fortunate to hold this position, champion their work, and have Conde Nast's support every step of the way. In an era where most media companies are behaving like cowards, I'm lucky to work for one of the few that does the opposite. Mat Honan reacted on thisMat Honan reacted on thisThis week, I started a new role leading communications at Block! It came down to the purpose and the opportunity ahead, and of course the sharp, thoughtful, and cool people I met along the way. Block's brands—Square, Cash App, Afterpay, TIDAL (and more!)—share a common and important purpose: economic empowerment. Each creates more access for more people, but as an ecosystem work together to strengthen local economies and help businesses and communities thrive. Feels great to be a part of that work. I'm only five days in and still getting my bearings, but I feel energized by the team, excited about the work ahead, and grateful for the chance to help shape the next chapter of the Block story.

Mat Honan reacted on thisMat Honan reacted on thisI'm not at Business Insider anymore—got laid off in June—but one of the last things I got to do was join a big investigative team that had been grinding for months on a huge story: the mostly-secret nationwide build-out of data centers, huge warehouses of computational power, primarily to support artificial intelligence. Big companies and big money coming together to use land, water, and electricity, pollute, and generally remake the American built landscape, to fuel what could be a transformative technology. It was a real pleasure to join those folks writing this tale, and now the prestigious George Polk Awards agree that it was worth the effort. The team won the Polk for environmental reporting, well-deserved, making me even more fortunate to have been a part of it—some still at BI, some not, all great. Hannah Beckler, Dakin Campbell, Rosemarie H., Narimes P., Rosalie Chan, Jake Swearingen, Esther Kaplan—great to have worked with y'all (and plenty of others, forgive me) on this. https://lnkd.in/g_UPsKgR

"I found them anxious about AI exacerbating economic inequality, jeopardizing their employment prospects, and amplifying political polarization while eroding the quality of education and degrading Americans’ capacity to perform critical cognitive tasks. I heard immediate, tangible complaints about the impact of AI on their communities: electricity bills climbing skyward and the incessant hum of data centers disrupting once-quiet neighborhoods," Rebecca Lissner of Council on Foreign Relations in TIME https://lnkd.in/gZ-NsWrD

Gov. Newsom vetoed California's "No Robo Bosses Act" (SB 7), which would have established broad, first-in-the-nation restrictions on the ways businesses use AI and algorithmic tools to hire, fire, and manage their employees. Labor unions pushed for the legislation as a way to ensure human managers remain involved in making personnel decisions. They also sought to prevent employees from being auto-fired based on undisclosed performance metrics or quotas, among other concerns about the technology's applications. Business groups made it a priority to defeat the legislation. The California Chamber of Commerce estimated businesses would have to spend $1 billion to comply with it. Contemporary narrative theory operates within interpretive frameworks that produce non-reproducible, culturally contingent readings. The Bulut Doctrine proposes a paradigm shift: a narrative text is not an abstract cultural artifact but a closed physical system whose environmental parameters — thermal gradients, acoustic impedance, luminous decay, and kinetic momentum — interface directly with the human autonomic nervous system, producing measurable and reproducible biophysical outputs independent of cultural background.

Lately, when I tell people that I am a writer, the conversation inevitably turns to artificial intelligence. People want to know if AI will replace journalists and take over everything from writing newspapers to books. I don't think it will, and here's why. It’s what I write about this week https://lnkd.in/e2F-a2Aa

Journalists lost a lot of public trust when politicians turned the term “fake news” (a term journalists came up with!) into a weapon. Similar things have been happening in the language of science. I got to chew on that a bit it in C&EN: https://lnkd.in/eDyFfP-t In reading up for this one, this stat came up: Between 2016 and 2020, the president said/wrote “fake news” 1,906 times. “While the president has used the phrase to undermine reporters holding him and power to account, actual fake news has proliferated.”https://lnkd.in/e8b7AZYJ
