Kami R. shared thisSome people in SF are offering $1M above asking price and it's still not considered competitive, said a real estate agent. Some of his clients who work in A.I. made all-cash offers, agreed to close quickly, waived contingencies and it wasn’t enough. Latest: https://lnkd.in/gxaJx85g

For tenants in San Francisco right now, big tech is coming for your rent controlled homes. If your landlord approaches you about a tenant buyout, think carefully about whether it makes sense to explore negotiations and make sure you have the right counsel on your side to assist. https://lnkd.in/gbX3qSiuAs A.I. Kami R. reacted on thisKami R. reacted on thisIt’s The New York Times Opinion Section’s second cake day on Reddit, Inc.! 🥂🤖🧡 After taking the reins from Kami R. last March, I’ve been having a blast sharing our work across the platform. Building upon Kami’s wonderful foundations, we’ve now earned 150,000 karma across 1,800 posts and 2,800 comments, expanding our reach to more than 400 subreddits and closely partnering with a handful of dedicated spaces (reddit.com/user/nytopinion). Reddit is a different beast than any other social platform. Discovery, participation, and moderation are all unique experiences for every site user; toss in content strategy and brand restrictions and it quickly becomes a bit of a minefield for us. One of the best parts of audience work is framing and reframing stories to best suit specific audiences without misrepresenting the original piece — and that’s the bread and butter of our work within Reddit’s highly segmented information ecosystem. Not to come across too corporate-pilled, but navigating all of this has been genuinely engaging and rewarding. Thanks to Adrienne Shih, Hibaq Farah, Liriel Higa, Alexandra March, Brittney Forbes, and Gabriel Sands for the teamwork it takes to make this a truly special platform for us. To the next two years and beyond! x

Kami R. liked thisKami R. liked thisExciting career update: I’ve been promoted at Bloomberg! Starting today I'm now an editor, responsible for our coverage of Big Tech. That means I’ll be managing a terrific team of reporters who cover some of the world’s largest and most influential companies, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft and, of course, Meta. I’ve been covering the social media beat since 2013 (!) and while I’ll continue to oversee our social media coverage, I likely won’t be writing or reporting on the day-to-day news like I’ve been doing for more than a decade. That will take some adjustment, but this is a great opportunity to expand my focus, take on a new challenge, and work more closely with some of the best business journalists around. I’m grateful to Sarah Frier , Tom Giles and Jillian Ward for entrusting me with this responsibility, and for being great mentors and friends. And grateful, too, for Riley Ray Griffin and Alexandra Levine who have been tremendous partners on the social media beat the past two years! Here's the update Sarah sent our team earlier today: https://lnkd.in/gU49M2v2Wagner named Big Tech team leader at Bloomberg - Talking Biz NewsWagner named Big Tech team leader at Bloomberg - Talking Biz News

Kami R. liked thisKami R. liked thisIt’s my final week in San Francisco before the big move back to Bloomberg’s HQ in NYC. One thing that’s super rewarding about being a tech reporter: You can cover an emerging thing and then, if it becomes more real and powerful, you can suddenly be in a position to help the public understand it. You can ask more consequential questions and grow alongside the industry. When I moved to SF in 2013, Facebook was newly public and Twitter was about to list. Back then, I was writing about updates to the News Feed and asking questions about whether mobile advertising would actually work as a business model. The companies kept growing, and I kept learning. I hustled for bigger scoops and Businessweek cover stories, wrote a book called No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram, and eventually became a manager. I absorbed so much — through trial and error, through sources, through brilliant colleagues — about how to do and support the kind of reporting that really matters to people. Meanwhile, a few of the local companies became the infrastructure of modern society. So why does it make sense that the next step for me is outside of Silicon Valley? Because the AI story is affecting every aspect of our economy, and covering it well requires close collaboration with the rest of the newsroom too. Feeling grateful for this extremely formative era of my life in SF, and all the people who made it possible. Looking forward to all the new adventures and challenges in NYC starting next week. Bonus throwback content: an extremely 2013 selfie, of a NYC reporter who dreamed of going to SF to cover tech.

Kami R. liked thisKami R. liked thisEvery time I talk to non-journalist friends about my job, I'm surprised by how much the average 20-something (who is smart and caring!) doesn't know about the journalistic process and ethics. In my personal life, I answer questions like: "What do you mean you can't just *go* to protests?" "Why does the headline say 'allegedly'? Isn't that biased?" "Isn't everyone biased? What is even the point??" (that's a fun one) There are so many invisible choices we make as journalists: story framing, which sources to quote and why, subtle turns of phrase to make sure we're nailing attribution and fairness. They're clear to other journalists but not to my friends, who are intelligent and civically engaged people. If we truly want to serve our communities, we can't take for granted that people know how these invisible ethical machinations work. So as an audience engagement strategist, I try to be extremely conscious about making the invisible visible. When I work with newsrooms on their welcome series for new subscribers, or other audience-facing copy, I push them to explain their reporting, to be explicit about their values, and to be transparent about funding and process. 💬 Questions for you now! What are the other questions you get from non-journalists? What are the things that you think newsrooms should make more explicit to build trust with audiences?

Journalism is not a job. It’s a responsibility. Behind every headline is a journalist facing pressure, threats, limited resources, and uncomfortable truths. Journalism is not about popularity or pleasing power corridors—it’s about asking difficult questions and standing with facts when silence is easier. In courtrooms, on streets, and in newsrooms, journalists witness realities that many choose to ignore. The real struggle in journalism is not deadlines; it is independence. Not access; it is credibility. Not views; it is truth. A journalist’s duty is simple yet heavy: to inform without fear, to question without bias, and to speak when others are forced to remain silent. As we move forward, journalism must remain brave, ethical, and people-centric—because when journalism weakens, accountability disappears. Truth does not need protection. It needs courage. #Journalism #PressFreedom #CourtReporting #EthicalJournalism #TruthMatters #MediaResponsibility #LinkedInJournalism

Netflix isn't amused by ByteDance's new AI-generated video tool. The streaming giant sent a strongly worded cease-and-desist letter to the China-based TikTok parent on Tuesday night, calling its new generative AI model Seedance 2.0 "a high-speed piracy engine." Seedance turned heads after a user created a viral video of people resembling Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting on a rooftop about Jeffrey Epstein. The Walt Disney Company and Paramount sent similar messages to ByteDance last week, as Hollywood frets about generative AI tools.
