Josh Baltzell shared thisEnd of an era for me. Today I’m closing my office in Perrysburg. It’s just an office, it’s no big deal, and I’m just working at home on the same projects and for the same great company. Then again, it’s also the place where my partner and I took a business from a job, to a busy business, to a company that we sold. That was probably the most important event of my career so far. Josh Baltzell liked thisJosh Baltzell liked thisIt’s official. 🎓 I’m grateful to share that I have completed my Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Information Systems at Liberty University, officially conferred on August 17, 2026. This has been an especially meaningful academic journey because of how closely the research aligned with the work I am doing professionally. My doctoral research examined the implementation of artificial intelligence and intelligent automation within complex financial and enterprise environments. The research reinforced something I see regularly in practice: successful AI transformation is rarely just a technology challenge. It requires trustworthy and explainable outcomes, strong data and integration foundations, thoughtful governance, redesigned operating models, and—perhaps most importantly—the involvement and adoption of the people who ultimately have to work with the technology. Completing this program while continuing to grow professionally made the experience both demanding and incredibly relevant. The opportunity to move continually between academic research and real-world application challenged me to think more critically about not only what AI can do, but what organizations must do to implement it successfully and responsibly. I’m especially grateful to my doctoral chair, Dr. Festus Oluseyi Oderanti, for his guidance throughout the final stages of this journey, and to the faculty, colleagues, friends, and family who supported and encouraged me along the way. The degree is complete, but the work that inspired the research certainly isn’t. I’m looking forward to continuing to build on it as organizations navigate the next generation of AI, agentic automation, and enterprise transformation. We didn't build anything new for that moment. We happened to already have it. ShotBlocker has been around since 2005 — Bionix®co-founder Dr. James Huttner invented it after using it on his own daughter to ease her shot anxiety. It's been used for insulin injections, hormone therapy, allergy shots, vaccines. A simple, non-pharmacological device, ShotBlocker is supported by a number of clinical studies over the years that demonstrate its effectiveness at reducing pain from needle pokes and needle anxiety in patients. Turns out two decades of solving for "how do we make a needle less scary" was really good preparation for the GLP-1 moment that is now upon us.

Josh Baltzell liked thisJosh Baltzell liked thisYears ago I was helping a health startup build a prototype app for iPhone. A researcher had devised a way to approximate a person's blood glucose levels from a close-up photograph of their eye. The ideal usage scenario had the person taking a photo of their own eye, but the photo needed to be of sufficient resolution, and the front-facing camera wasn't going to cut it. So that meant using the rear-facing camera. The idea was that the test would be self-administered at home; in practice this meant the device screen would be facing away from the user. They'd be shooting blind, so to speak. I wanted the photo to be taken automatically, without the user needing to press a button at time of capture. Point the rear-facing camera at their own eye, hold the phone at a certain distance, provide auditory guidance cues, and then automatically capture the photo when the eye was properly framed and in focus. This was in 2013. Years ago, like I said. iPhone 5 era. I built the app using OpenCV (open source computer vision model) and Objective-C on the front-end and used Laravel 4 and the Dropbox SDK for storage on the backend. Dropbox auto synced to the researcher's Mac for the actual medical image processing. This was just to prove the concept. Ultimately it was determined that phone camera imaging wasn't ready yet for the use case. The assessment model really required high-quality SLR images (both for baseline and point-in-time) to work well. But outside of my consulting work I make game apps, and that eye imaging prototype project gave me an idea for a game. I registered an entry in App Store Connect, on October 26 at 2:50pm according to the history (pictured). And then I moved on to working on an app for another life sciences company. So that game idea got shelved. And I've been sitting on this idea ever since 2013, never quite finding (or making) the time for it. Until now. The first beta was just approved for TestFlight.

Ohio is reportedly handing out far more in data center tax incentives than originally projected — to the tune of roughly $1.6B this year. At the same time, we’re seeing press releases celebrating community grants from some of the same companies benefiting from those incentives. Yes, those grants matter. Local organizations should absolutely accept the support, and I’m glad the money is flowing back into communities in some capacity. But it does create a strange dynamic where taxpayers subsidize enormous infrastructure expansion, then applaud when a comparatively tiny portion of that value returns through philanthropy (note that the size of the grants is not disclosed). I’m not anti-growth, anti-tech, or anti-data center—that would be extremely hypocritical of me. Ohio should absolutely compete for the future economy. But at some point, we should be honest about the difference between economic development and corporate goodwill campaigns. They are not the same thing. When the gap between public investment and public return becomes this large, people have a right to ask whether we negotiated these deals from a position of strength. https://lnkd.in/gpgm3dzB https://lnkd.in/gJ36DiTp
