This is the mindset! It’s a lot like real estate. It’s a big decision, but if you can’t analyze quickly and move decisively, another buyer will. Suddenly, that perfect house is under agreement and you’re settling for another one. If it makes sense, lock it down!

Jim McGowan reacted on thisJim McGowan reacted on thisWhen we started Ad Results, we were three people. When a deal made sense, we called the right person at the network and closed it. Days, not quarters. By the time we grew to 140 employees, I can guarantee you we had slowed down. More layers, more reviews, more meetings before anyone picked up a phone. We missed opportunities I still remember. That's not a knock on the team. It's what scale does to speed if you let it. Now I sit on the talent side, and I watch the same thing happen from the other direction. Every single week. A brand's agency gets presented a YouTube show or a full 360 creator program. The audience is right. The numbers are right. The talent is ready to move. And then: another round of analysis. A committee. Another thirty column spreadsheet to fill out. A request for benchmarks on a format too new to have benchmarks. A decision punted to next quarter's planning cycle. Here's what I've learned about big agencies: nobody gets fired for being slow. People get fired for being wrong. So everyone chooses slow. It feels safe. It's the most expensive choice on the menu. Because while the deck is in its third review, a more nimble agency or an in-house team takes the deal. And in the creator space, losing the deal doesn't mean paying more later. Top voices sign exclusives. Categories lock up. When a competitor signs the voice your customers trust, you're not late. You're locked out. The creator space is an arms race right now. Full NIL, 360 programs, YouTube first shows. The inventory that matters is scarce, and the ground shifts weekly. Look at this month: Spotify tests one skip button and the math on every standard podcast buy changed overnight. A market that reprices in a week cannot be bought on a quarterly planning cycle. Speed doesn't mean skipping the diligence. It means knowing what converts well enough to do the diligence fast. And if your agency is moving slow, change it. Slow isn't a style. It's market share flowing to your competitor every week the decision sits in review. The nimble will win this race. Jim McGowan reacted on thisJim McGowan reacted on thisThe best performing show I ever bought for a weight loss brand had an audience that was over 90 percent male. That wasn't luck and it wasn't a dart throw. We bought it because we knew it would perform. We'd watched that host sell. The rest of the category was fighting over the female-skewing shows because the customer profile said women, and those endorsements were priced up, worn out, and saturated with competitor reads. The show everyone ignored sold like nothing else on the plan. First, know what I mean by bought. Not a spot. A personality live endorsement, the host selling in their own words, on YouTube, podcast or radio, and now wrapped with social UGC. Here's the problem with how most agencies buy. They buy the top downloaded podcast. Not the one that works. The charts tell you who's big. They tell you nothing about who can sell. And once you know what to look for, you see it in every category. B2B brands pile into the small business shows. What converts? Comedy. Business owners don't spend their listening hours being talked to about business. Pet food brand wanted shopping moms, bought every female skewed show. The winners were sports shows. The person who loves their dog like family is watching the game with the dog on the couch. Why does this keep happening? Because a safe buy that fails quietly never gets anyone in trouble, and a test outside the target has someone's name on it. We fight that battle across the table from every large agency in the business. The buyers never step out. And every time they don't, they hand the best performing personalities in the category to the one competitor willing to test. Your target is what works. Not what you want it to be. The real filter was never the demo anyway. It's whether the host can sell. I've seen hosts who perform for any brand you hand them, because they know how to sell and their audience trusts them like a friend. A great seller with the wrong audience beats a weak seller with the perfect one. Every time. So here's the test. Pull up your plan and count the buys that are there because they perform, versus the ones that are there because they topped a chart. Jim McGowan liked thisJim McGowan liked thisEvery lifelong skier or snowboarder has a first day. For me, that first day set the trajectory for the next 27 seasons of my life. What started as discovering snowboarding became a career that has now spanned 24 years in the snowsports industry. That personal connection is part of what makes the work I am doing on Epic SchoolKids particularly meaningful. Epic SchoolKids provides eligible K–5 students with free access to skiing and riding at participating resorts, including Park City, Whistler Blackcomb, and Colorado resorts such as Keystone, Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, and Crested Butte. Eligible first-time skiers and riders can also receive a complimentary lesson and rental package. It is one of the programs Vail Resorts supports to help lower barriers to participation and introduce more young people and families to the sports we love. The creative here is an example of recent go-to-market work supporting Epic SchoolKids in Colorado, focused on reaching families where they are and turning awareness into action. From a business perspective, the opportunity is bigger than a single visit. A great first experience can build confidence, create a family connection to the mountains, and potentially become the beginning of a lifelong relationship with skiing and snowboarding. I know firsthand how powerful that first experience can be. I am grateful to now have the opportunity to help create more of those moments for the next generation. Jim McGowan reacted on thisI cannot stress enough how much I love helping businesses grow, and getting to do that through audio. I’ll ask a million questions, I’ll challenge assumptions and pressure-test different scenarios, but a big part of good client service is building a trust to have those conversations in the first place. Early in my career, it was drilled into me to treat the client’s money as if it were my own. I still think that way today. Would I spend my own money on this? What are the pros and cons? What are we missing? What could go wrong? Those are questions I consider before making a recommendation. We’re being trusted with someone else’s money and their business. That deserves thought, questions, and sometimes pushback… but none of it happens without a relationship. The stronger, the relationship, the more honest you can be with each other. You can disagree, ask the uncomfortable questions, and still know we’re aiming for the same goal, helping the business grow.
