Jeremy Sirota shared thisDescartes: I think, therefore I am. Sirota: I talk, therefore I rabbit hole. Here’s the deal: I can be systematic, automatic, ultraorderly. If you doubt me, just ask any fencing parent who’s seen my packing list and reminders for a travel tournament. (And, yes, it must be the Glacial Freeze Blue Gatorade. I’m literally throwing money away if I buy Frost, Cool Blue, or Berry. Also, if you doubt me, ask yourself why is it so challenging to find Glacial Freeze?) In fact, I can be downright brutal about an orderly approach. That may have something to do with my first year at Warner Music. One day I was walking to our CEO’s office, armed with a 30-minute presentation, when my boss leaned over and told me right before we entered his office: “You have 3 minutes to present.” Oof! But, here I go, already digressing. That’s because I love a good rabbit hole. My brain is like a kaleidoscope playing Marty Supreme-level ping pong while spinning around in a tea cup on the Mad Tea Party ride at Disneyland. My head of comms at Merlin knew my tendency to rabbit hole. During one of our first Zoom calls she started to slowly raise something at the bottom of the screen. I was so deep in some diatribe that I didn’t even notice at first. As she continued to slowly raise the object, I saw ears and fluff and a button nose. It was a stuffed bunny rabbit. It was a bonding moment more momentous than any polished press release. It’s one of those “remember when you…” kind of stories. I had gone so far down the rabbit hole I didn’t even know what I was talking about. Whereas she felt like she was listening to someone on DMT. That’s the beauty of the mess. It’s a creative oil slick. It’s why I love a room that says “let’s solve this the worst way possible” or a meeting where “only bad ideas are allowed.” Formulas that add up, check. Well-structured Gantt charts, sure, why not. So go ahead and make the immaculate spreadsheet. Just make sure to fall down the hole and chase the rabbit.

We don’t need to talk about bagels any more. There was never a competition. 4. Diners aren’t dead. They just all moved to Queens. 5. 4am is last call. 6. Every generation has its Beatrice. 7. McSorley’s serves it simple: light or dark. Plus raw onions. 8. The West Village streets are deliberately confusing. We call it charm. 9. Summer Fridays in the city are paradise. 10. A $30 cocktail seems reasonable, but we’ll walk 10 blocks to avoid a $3.50 ATM fee. Sidenote: Unfortunately you still can’t get a decent burrito.

Jeremy Sirota shared thisThere’s a set of photographs by Sally Mann I saw for the very first time last week. They are the earliest work of one of America’s most iconic photographers. She made them as a 19-year old on her father’s old camera. These were her first photographs. That inspired her to become a photographer! For me, these photographs tell me two things at the same time: 1. I have the utmost faith and confidence in my ability. 2. I am utterly blind to how far I still need to go. Sally Mann is an American legend. I've always been awed by her photographs. It was only after reading her latest book that I’m now inspired by her audacity. I wonder if she looked at her first pictures and thought: “This is the worst I will ever be.” Does she now look through the lens and only think: “How can I make this better?” That’s the stage of life I'm in: how can I make this better. How can I be a better husband, a better father, a better friend. There are certain things I will never achieve: publishing the Great American Novel or becoming a tennis pro. I can think about Sally Mann’s first photographs every day and ask: what can I make better?

Jeremy Sirota shared thisLosing sucks. What’s even worse? Your day starts with losing. July 1st, 2:00pm, Portland, Oregon Convention Center. My 14-year old daughter’s fencing competition at USA Fencing started with back-to-back losses. Opponents she could beat. She also didn’t just lose. She lost badly. They weren’t even close. She was nervous about losing. So she started losing because she was fencing not to lose. Where your brain goes, your body follows. (It’s why coaches tell you to visualize success or watch videos of yourself winning.) An entire season of preparation was swirling away. Hundreds of classes and lessons. Working with a body mechanics specialist to improve her flexibility. Working with a personal trainer to increase her strength. Spending a thousand hours to get her body in the best possible shape. Her next bout was now minutes away. The ref would soon call her back onto the strip to fence again. This was the moment. Four more bouts. Four opponents left to redeem her start to the competition. How do you get your head back in the game with the clock running? You obviously go do cartwheels in the hallway. Have fun. Laugh. Losing sucks. Figuring out a way to bounce back is what matters. Doing it in style with cartwheels? Chef’s kiss. And before you ask: 🤺 Yes, she won her next four bouts. 🤺 She's the one on the right in the photo. 🤺 Yes, she reads and approves all of these before I post them. Go Fencers Club!

Jeremy Sirota shared thisWho else wanted to be Superman? I did. Unfortunately I took it a leap too far. I wanted to go “up, up, and away.” My body took me “down, down, and splat.” There are so many moments throughout my life that I have found terribly embarrassing. Even today I can still feel the emotional roller coaster when I think of them too long. The girl who said no to a first date (in 5th grade no less!). That time I dropped the baton in the 4x400 relay. Pretending I knew something to a partner at the law firm and getting caught. Last week, when I fell flat on my back in tennis class trying to hit an easy forehand. Embarrassment was my Kryptonite. That’s why my list got so long. Failure? Fine. Rolling into a party solo? No problem. Unprepared, outclassed, wrong. Whatever. But people laughing at me, real or imagined? F***CK. In 1985, I walked into our garage full of hope, joy and delusion. Dressed in my red and blue "cape," I spun right round until I thought I would lift off, like Superman. Instead I went straight down into the concrete. Broke my arm. Split my chin open. Spent the day in the pediatrician’s office getting stitched up, while bawling and throwing a fit the whole time. They could hear my screams from the waiting room. As my sister likes to remind me every few years. Do I still find it a bit embarrassing to think about? Uhh, yeah. Totally. But I don’t run from it any more. 90% of the embarrassment is in our heads. The other 10% is the friends who won’t let us forget it. And who wants to be defined by that? Then there’s this one time. Not me, my work colleague. He did something comically stupid and embarrassing. He was mortified. He couldn’t stop thinking about it. Totally spiraling. I told him: no one will remember that moment but you. I reminded him that we’re all human and make mistakes. I shared some of my bonehead moments so he could move on. It’s what we do when someone stumbles that defines us. The rest is noise. That Sunday. In the garage. I wasn’t steering into the skid. I was the skid. And, yes, the photo below is of me today. The photo of me from 1985? I do have it – arm in a janky cast, chin split open with bad stitches, and absolutely wild-eyed and pain drunk. That's what I call more of an "Instagram Story for Close Friends" kind of photo.

When I joined the board, my why was twofold: bring 20 years of sports industry experience to the governance level of an NGB, and help strengthen the equal opportunities and values USA Fencing already champions. Over my term, I got to work alongside an incredible staff and board to push both forward, and I'm proud of the progress we made together. To the board and staff who welcomed me in and trusted me with real work- thank you. To the members, coaches, and athletes who make this sport what it is: it was a privilege to serve you. A special thank you to Phil Andrews, a dear friend and one of the best leaders I've had the chance to work alongside. Your vision for this sport is contagious. I'm stepping away from the board, not the sport. LA 2028 is right around the corner, and I'll be cheering loudly from the stands. I'll continue to dedicate my career to serving in roles where I can bring my experience to the table, whether at the team, NGB, or ownership level. Onward. En garde. 🤺

Reclaiming the "discovery loop" is the next big battleground for premium streamers and sports rights holders. In my recent sit-down with Brandon Costa at Sports Video Group (SVG), we discussed why industry leaders are moving the verticalized swipe experience inside their own apps. As we’ve known for a while, verticalized shorts are not a trend; they are a strategic move to reclaim the discovery loop and drive long-form retention. This is exactly what we’re seeing with the recent news of Disney+ ESPN’s Verts launch. By rolling out a dedicated vertical feed, they are meeting Gen Z and Gen Alpha where they already live. As I discussed with Brandon, here are the operational keys to making this work: ➡️ Bridge the Retention Gap: Short-form is the new "front door." By bringing vertical feeds directly into the O&O environment, broadcasters keep fans within their own ecosystem, using snackable discovery to lead them back to the live game. ➡️ The 60-Second Rule: In a real-time world, velocity is a moat.
