Grace Hua shared thisI grew up in a generation inundated with apps to track every part of your life. How many calories you ate today, how many miles you ran, how much money you spent this month, how many hours of sleep you got last night, how many ski runs you crammed in on your Whistler trip. But the biggest problem has always been: you need to go to them. I have to go out of my way and open up Strava, or MyFitnessPal, or RocketMoney - and diligently track my life. It seems small, but the mental overhead it takes to remember each app that tracks every part of my life starts to add up. Until I stopped using them altogether. I invested in Tomo because it's the first thing I've seen that flips this paradigm. It lives in your iMessages alone. You literally just text a number and it will text you back. It learns your goals, checks in like a friend, and remembers everything you said you'd do. It's the closest thing I've seen to your future self texting you first. In less than a year, already 500,000+ people have used it to get in shape, land jobs, rebuild relationships, and pick back up the goals they'd left behind. GenZs don't need another productivity tool. Sam WaterburyGrace Hua shared thisHere’s my annual post to celebrate the people I work with at Unify 🙂 Before I get too deep into it, I want to take you back to earlier this year. A few months ago I went deep on something I hadn't really done before - sitting down with sellers, revenue leaders, and founders and just asking them to be brutally honest with me. That meant listening to everything they loved.. and HATED about their current tools. I learned two things: 1) people love to complain, and 2) what sellers can do themselves - and want to do themselves - has drastically evolved. The best thing we could do as a team was sit down, listen, and get to building. I've been at Unify for two years now and I'm really proud of what we've built. But above anything, I'm consistently impressed by this team's ability to take what we know and still be open to change. We've gotten things right and wrong over the years - and especially in the past few months, we've gotten some incredibly valuable (and sometimes hard to hear) feedback from customers, prospects, and even people we couldn't close. Our product instincts have always been strong, but watching the team reset and rebuild and truly put sellers first has been epic to watch. And all in such a short amount of time! Startups force you to wear a ton of different hats - and I'm in awe of what this team has done to make this happen. Jonathan Dai running Cafe Unify to keep morale high, Austin Hughes topping the PR leaderboard, Alexander Lucey literally becoming my legal counsel, and Connor Heggie, Kevin Kim, Kunal R. proving they are the best Rice engineers of all time - we've somehow pulled off the biggest product moment in Unify history. Grace Hua liked thisGrace Hua liked this➡️ Meet the Women of 18C: Adel Wu I met Adel 4 years ago while building The New Club. She was a Software Engineer at Meta at the time. Like many other women in our community, she had joined Meta straight out of college and holds a B.S. in Computer Graphics from University of Pennsylvania. She joined our community looking to meet new people & explore new career paths and peers who actually inspired her. Outside of work? She was a fireball: dancer, artist, small business owner. I couldn't believe her creative capacity! 🔥 But in her job, she felt like something was missing. What stood out to me during coaching wasn’t that Adel was multi-talented. It was that she could see her own thinking in real time. In one conversation she named it: the “I feel stuck” feeling was the thing in the way. She needed to leave before something was lined up so her creativity could move. So she jumped and quit Meta with nothing lined up next. In the months after, she wrote and illustrated a coloring book, won a live painting competition, built an events business, and landed a role in a completely different domain at a 7-person startup called Reducto. She almost thought she wanted to be a Product Manager, and received multiple offers in this domain. But in the end she chose to do something completely outside her scope, and started marketing at Reducto. Today she’s followed them through 2 funding rounds, growing 10x in size, stepping into a brand and content focused role, leading a team in a discipline she had no experience in. And to top it all off, in the last 6 months, Bain Capital Ventures (BCV) and Andreessen Horowitz both named her a fellow. We’re so proud of Adel. If you haven’t met her, go say hi!

Founders everywhere want to build for the government again. The hard part is getting the government to buy. At Also Capital this fall, I learned about early-stage start-ups pioneering in energy, manufacturing, aerospace and defense, healthcare, and a million other aspects of state capacity. Almost all of them are trying to sell to the Government. Across stints at the State Department, World Bank, and academia, I’ve heard all about how the public sector needs to embrace these innovators. Yes, there have been changes in procurement policy, budgets, and culture. It’s easy to understand how the Palantir’s, Anduril’s, and OpenAI’s of the world now sell to government partners. But what about a pair of engineers who haven’t been to DC since their 8th grade field trip? Teams with no beltway connections or know-how? So I wrote that story. Sort of. While I was at Also, I interviewed 20+ founders, VCs, govt GTM wizards, and ex-military/government officials, all of whom have witnessed the government as a customer. I embedded all their perspectives into a story: WHAT IS GOVERNMENT? about a fictional founder named Phil Stack. Phil will meet his investor (Angelica Rounds), his head of GTM (Max Clarence), and a procurement officer (Connie Tract). Through them, we learn all about the government that Phil encounters. What animates it, what defines it, and what is it doing next? Loved geeking out with some of the sharpest minds in healthcare VC this week. It’s always energizing to hear folks unpack where digital health, AI, and care delivery might be heading — especially because there are thoughtful perspectives across the spectrum. A few takeaways that stood out: 1️⃣Cost containment is top of mind — though strategies vary widely. Everyone agrees rising costs are unsustainable, but the approaches differ: specialty care models, operational efficiency, labor leverage, and infrastructure all play a role. Examples: Heartbeat Health (cardiology), CareBridge (LTSS/HCBS; acquired by Elevance), Diana Health (OB/GYN across high-Medicaid hospitals). 2️⃣AI has real promise — but the bar is very high. There’s no shortage of enthusiasm around AI, but also healthy skepticism about where value will truly accrue. The consistent theme: depth of technical differentiation + measurable workflow impact. Example: Ambience Healthcare — backed for its technical rigor and broader infrastructure vision beyond scribing. 3️⃣The commercial employer market is evolving fast. Especially among small and mid-market employers, we’re seeing more innovation around transparency, dynamic plan design, and benefit flexibility. Examples: Helm Health (dynamic copay), Garner Health (transparent navigation), Lynx (ICHRA infrastructure). 4️⃣Value-based care continues to be a long-term direction for the system. While there are different views on timing and adoption, the shared belief is that models improving efficiency, right-site-of-care, and aligned incentives will play an increasingly important role. Examples: Equip (case-rate eating disorder care — strong outcomes without needing full risk), InStride Health (severe OCD/child behavioral health). 5️⃣Epic remains one of the most influential forces in the market. Even without launching a full product, Epic can “freeze” an entire category simply by announcing that they’re entering it. While their first versions often deliver ~60% of best-in-class functionality, their scale, distribution, and embedded workflows mean adoption can still be high — and the ripple effects for startups are significant.
