Georgina Dukes-Harris shared thisLatoshia Rouse named it perfectly. We cannot meaningfully address maternal mortality while sidelining the very workforce designed to prevent it. Georgia ranks among the worst states in the country for maternal mortality. And yet the policies governing who gets to provide care continue to prioritize legacy structures over patient outcomes. The providers closest to the community, the ones who provide relationship-based, continuous, culturally grounded care, are the ones the system makes hardest to sustain. At Swishvo we see this every day. Credentialing barriers. Billing gaps. Supervision requirements that exist not to protect patients but to protect incumbents. The question is no longer whether midwives and community-based providers are part of the solution. The question is whether we will build the policy and infrastructure to let them be. Georgina Dukes-Harris shared thisI recently found out something profound! My grandfather, Tim Jackson, was a barber in South Carolina. Then computers arrived in the 1980s and something in him lit up. He taught himself everything. Fell so deeply in love with these machines that he built an entirely new career around them. He got a job at a company called PMSC. Policy Management Systems Corporation. Blythewood, South Carolina. What I did not know until recently is what PMSC actually built. They built the infrastructure for how America processes insurance claims. Data gathering. Underwriting. Claims handling. Reporting. 6,000 employees worldwide at their peak. Described as the most significant insurance technology company of their era. My grandfather wrote that code. He was dying of colon cancer when I was born in 1991. Gone before I turned one. But even from his hospital bed, people from PMSC kept coming. Meetings at the bedside. How did you build this? How do we maintain it? How do we make it better? He could barely walk from the pain. But my mother said he would limp across that room just to pick me up. He called me Joy. I am building Swishvo right now. Billing infrastructure, credentialing pathways, and claims processing tools for birth workers, chaplains, grief counselors, and ancestral healers. The people doing sacred work without a system designed to see them. I did not know this story when I started building. But God did. My grandfather built the infrastructure for how insurance processes claims. His granddaughter is building the infrastructure for whose care gets to be claimed at all. He lived for Joy. A coaching client said this to me in a recent engagement and while I've heard this thought before, something about it felt different — because I've been there too. Ironically, even after building a career out in the digital spaces. But here's what I've learned (and what I walked through with them): The leaders who struggle most with visibility aren't the ones who lack credibility. Far from it actually. They're the ones who have spent years elevating everyone else's voice except their own. Surfacing complexities within the confines of a specific project. So we reframed it. What if your platform wasn't about *promoting yourself* at all? What if it was about taking the narrator seat — connecting the dots and putting your perspective out into the world so the right people can find you? I've talked about the power of intentionally curating your ecosystem where people who are aligned with you actively engage and not just an audience to talk at. Georgina Dukes-Harris shared thisI used to apologize for being too much. Too many titles. Too many callings. Too many lanes. Founder. MDiv candidate. Wife. Mother of three. Future Ordained minister. Writer. Advocate. Builder. People would look at the list and wait for me to pick one. To edit myself down to something more digestible. More legible. More comfortable for the room. I am done with that. I am in my maximalist era. Lately, something has shifted in Swishvo. Providers are onboarding. Contracts are closing. The right investors are showing up. The ones who don't want to water this down. And more importantly, something has shifted in me. I'm no longer editing myself to fit into categories that were never built for what I'm creating. I'm stepping into a different kind of leadership. Not about being the loudest in the room. About being fully present in it. It looks like: Building a company that challenges how healthcare defines legitimacy. Preparing for ordination while running a startup. Being a wife and mother of three and still choosing expansion. Refusing the idea that I have to pick one lane to be taken seriously. I spent years believing I had to shrink some part of myself to be taken seriously. That the boardroom version of me, the pulpit version, and the version of me on the nursery floor at 2am with a baby who will not sleep were somehow in conflict. They are not. They are all the same woman. Just in different rooms. Womanist theology names this clearly: Black women's flourishing is not excessive. It is divine. You are not scattered. You are expansive. And that is holy ground. To every founder, every mother, every woman who has been told she is too much... Your maximalist era is not a phase. Tyson School of Medicine about the "Wonder Prescription"—a vision for unlocking access to social prescribing for young people to support their mental and behavioral health. What if instead of only writing prescriptions for medication, we could also prescribe connection, creativity, and community? Social prescribing—linking young people to non-clinical supports like arts programs, nature-based activities, peer support, and community resources—is showing remarkable outcomes for youth mental health and substance use prevention. Yet it remains largely inaccessible to the young people who need it most. At Unified Youth, we're working to change that. We're building Wonder Ecosystems—cross-sector partnerships that weave together arts organizations, peer support networks, healthcare systems, schools, and community resources to make social prescribing a reality for youth. Because every young person deserves access to the "Wonder Prescription"—pathways to healing, connection, and wellbeing that meet them where they are. On this Social Prescribing Day, we're reminded why this work matters: young people are telling us that creative wellbeing, peer support, and community connection are essential medicine. Georgina Dukes-Harris reacted on thisMidwives in Georgia are challenging state laws that limit their ability to practice. These restrictions require midwives to operate under physician supervision, often creating significant financial and structural barriers to care. At the same time, Georgia continues to face high maternal mortality rates, provider shortages, and persistent racial disparities. This is the tension we cannot ignore: We say we want to improve maternal outcomes… But we continue to limit the very workforce designed to provide relationship-based, continuous, and community-centered care. From a systems perspective, this isn’t just about midwifery. It’s about: • Workforce strategy – Are we fully leveraging and growing available providers options? • Access to care – Who is left without options? • Equity – Who is most impacted by these gaps? • Model of care – Are we building systems around patients, or around legacy structures? For those of us working in maternal and child health, this moment requires clarity: We cannot meaningfully address maternal mortality while sidelining community-based, evidence-aligned care models. The question is no longer whether midwives are part of the solution. The question is whether we will create policies that will allow them to be. My first experience on the Vineyard was a gift from my Black Ambition family. I was selected to go and experience everything the Vineyard has to offer for young founders, Black professionals, and anyone who wants a glimpse of what generational wealth looks and feels like. I had never felt so in awe in my life. I sat at tables with millionaires and billionaires. I walked the beach with my oh so pretty sorors of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated during Pinkwell. When former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb is in the room talking regulatory strategy, when founders like Toyin Ajayi, Oliver Kharraz, MD and Halle Tecco, MPH, MBA are sharing what it takes to build over decades—the caliber of candor is something you can't manufacture. To every CEO who showed up and said the real thing: thank you, you’re why we do this. She’s someone who truly understands retail from the inside: across both online and offline. But what makes Kelley exceptional isn’t just her experience. She’s deeply creative. Incredibly intentional. And has a level of taste and industry knowledge that you can’t teach. She brings value to our clients they would need to pay multiple people lots of dollars to get. That in itself is such a big reason we’re able to grow quicker than we imagined. Building a startup is chaos. Building one in retail tech is a very specific kind of chaos. This work is deeply personal to me. As someone with lived experience, I understand how complex and isolating this journey can be. It’s also something that significantly impacts the workplace. Many survivors are managing safety concerns, legal challenges, financial instability, and emotional stress while trying to maintain their jobs and careers. Survivors are doing all of that without any structured support and usually without any of their colleagues knowing, yet they still show up to meetings with a smile on their face. I want to approach this thoughtfully by learning directly from others with lived and professional experience. I’m looking to connect with: – Survivors who feel comfortable sharing general insights – Advocates, social workers, trauma therapists – Family law attorneys or legal aid professionals My goal is to better understand: – Where people feel most lost or unsupported – What resources are hardest to access – What tools or systems would actually make a difference Conversations would be completely confidential, and you can share as much or as little as you’re comfortable with.
