Edward Mehr shared thisA few weeks ago, Machina Labs crossed a pretty big milestone: hardware built by our Robocraftsman flew for the first time on a crewed aircraft. Getting a new manufacturing technology onto a manned aircraft is not exactly a “move fast and break things” business. It takes years. In the case of 3D printing, it took more than 25 years from commercial inception to flight. We did it in 5. Incredibly proud of this team and everyone who helped us get here. Great seeing some of the extended Machina family today who helped make it happen celebrating this milestone.

That was at the heart of our conversation as Machina welcomed AIA President & CEO Eric Fanning and the Aerospace Industries Association to our Los Angeles factory. China has built industrial capacity at extraordinary scale. America can out-innovate it by pairing our edge in AI, software and robotics with a defense industrial base built for speed. For the Department of War, that means treating advanced manufacturing capacity as a strategic capability in its own right, not simply the last step in acquisition. Grateful to Secretary Fanning and the AIA team for seeing Machina’s autonomous manufacturing systems in action, and how they can help move critical defense systems from prototype to production faster and respond to munitions constraints. 🇺🇸

Today, our team and and our large enterprise customers get to do that. Soon, it belongs to everyone.

Maxim Prut yes inner panel for an aircraft wing. A much more cost effective and weight efficient way to give aircraft the structural support it needs vs spars and ribs.

It's time to open the throttle and accelerate the physical buildout of AI: the strongest tool ever developed for solving problems and bestowing abundance. It is our social and national imperative. This fund will invest into all of the computer infrastructure on which AI runs, including chips, memory, networking, and storage. It also includes full systems for running AI: from data centers to robotics to home AI appliances. While we at a16z are generally known as software investors, we've never been religious about it. In 2016, we led the series A in Skydio; we invested in SpaceX; we wrote our first check into Anduril Industries in 2019, and were among the first venture investors in Waymo's 2020 raise. Over my time in DC, I’ve watched the bureaucratic pendulum swing between tightening controls and oversight and empowering industry to innovate and deliver. In recent NDAAs, Congress has made a number of really smart reforms aimed at increasing speed and agility.
