Wrapped up the Scrum Alliance Certified Agile Leadership (CAL 1) workshop today. Day 4 focused on Leading Organizations — and a theme that kept surfacing throughout the week: Organizational performance is rarely about isolated initiatives. It’s about the systems leaders design and reinforce. We explored concepts like: • The Ladder of Inference and how assumptions shape decisions • Evan Leybourn's Theory of Constraints applied to business agility • The Business Agility Institute model for organizational effectiveness What stood out most was the focus on behavior. Leaders ultimately influence outcomes by shaping the capabilities and behaviors embedded in the system, and by pulling the right levers to encourage those behaviors. And many thanks to Bernie Maloney and Anil Jaising, CST® for facilitating a class that also emphasized practical application. We worked through exercises to identify the specific levers leaders can pull to influence behavior and even designed small-scale experiments to test those ideas in real environments. In my opinion, this was a very worthwhile investment in continuing to learn how to build organizations that can adapt, learn quickly, and perform in complex environments.
