Colleen McGee liked thisColleen McGee liked thisI wanted to honor my dad here today to celebrate his life and the influence he had on my professional journey, as well as the impact of his values – and the incredible kindness of others – which has shaped me and my siblings, Brendan Curley and Shannon Curley Tower, and made the world a better place. How lucky are we to have had Dennis Patrick Curley aka “Pat” as a dad. Pat navigated the world with his values front and center -- he always brought the fun, loved connecting with people and had a service mindset which showed throughout his life and career. He was the gold standard in how to lead an impactful life. For me, he shared a love of Washington DC and with his encouragement, I came here from Buffalo to start a career in politics and eventually followed his example as an entrepreneur and business owner. I will never forget the day we sat together at the Clydes’ bar in Georgetown, and he gave me the literal “back-of-the napkin” advice that helped me start my company. He made it all seem so doable. As we mourn our dad, what has struck me over and over is the kindness of the people around us. From friends, family and colleagues to our parents’ friends, I have felt enveloped in love and support. And to all the people who have helped care for Dad as he battled Alzheimer’s for the past fifteen years, there has been so much kindness along the way. Most recently, there has been the care from Hospice holding our hands literally and figuratively in his final days, the priest who came on short notice to perform beautiful last rites, and my friend Melanie who is honoring dad with some of his favorite songs as we pay tribute to him. Listening to her sing “Danny Boy” is truly a gift. The kindness has such impact – it is a shining light during a difficult time, and a reminder that how you show up for people, in both little and big ways, really matters. That is quite a legacy, Pat. The 70.3 miles (1.2m swim, 56m bike, 13.1m run) is such a brutal dialogue between your limits and your will, an experience that truly mirrors that of being a founder. I witnessed a truth that every founder eventually hits: vision is the easy part, but building is the grind. We aren’t just imagining the future; we’re out here in the trenches making it real. It’s a grueling process that demands you stay steady and keep your head in the game, especially when the initial "high" of the idea has worn off and you're running on fumes. ⛽️ To be a founder is to be an endurance athlete. Both require a vision that stretches far beyond the current horizon and the audacity to believe you can reach it. 🏁The Course Notes: 🛡️The Support Crew: No one reaches the finish line alone. In startups, as in a 70.3, your support system is the bedrock. Special shoutout to my husband and fellow founder, Justin Dueck, thank you for being in my corner always and pushing me to be the best version of myself. 👟Winning the "Invisible Miles": The world sees the cheers on Race Day, but the victory is won in the predawn silence. It’s the unglamorous, un-glorified work of pounding the pavement when no one is watching that forges a founder. 🧠The Narrative of the Mind: In the "pain cave," the stories we tell ourselves become our reality. I chose to reframe discomfort as growth and visualized the finish line. We prevail through the relentless discipline of positive self-talk. 🐟"Just Keep Swimming": Dory spoke a universal truth. Whether literal or metaphorical, when the water is choppy and the path is steep, the only requirement is to keep moving (literally, that 1.2 mile swim in the ocean is no joke! lol). 🎤Manufacture Your Own Fun: The "middle miles" on the bike, as in startups, can be a lonely, boring stretch. When the mental fatigue hit, I leaned into the absurd and sang Mulan "I'll Make a Man Out Of You" at the top of my lungs. To survive the grind, you have to be your own spark. San Diego EDC: Building a Strong Healthcare Workforce Beyond 2025 It can be tough to find reliable, up-to-date, local San Diego labor market data an analysis. Look no farther than the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporate and its sister organization, North County EDC. The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to growing our region’s economy, fostering innovation, and ensuring inclusive prosperity. Through its Advancing San Diego program, EDC connects industry and education to align talent pipelines with real workforce needs. A New Report: Meeting San Diego’s Healthcare Talent Needs Beyond 2025 Healthcare is San Diego’s second-largest sector, supporting 160,000 jobs. Like much of the nation, our region faces a critical shortage of specialty nurses—particularly Operating Room, ICU/Critical Care, and Labor & Delivery RNs. While local programs graduate about 2,000 new RNs annually, most employer demand is for experienced and specialized roles, creating a major misalignment between education and industry. Key insights: ✅ San Diego will need 1,500+ additional RNs in the next three years. ✅ Specialty training is the top priority for employers. ✅ Cross-training Imaging Technologists (X-ray, CT, Sonography) adds significant value. Why it matters: A balanced healthcare workforce means investing in both new talent and advanced training. By working together, San Diego can create innovative solutions that meet today’s challenges and ensure our healthcare system thrives for years to come. My wife and I plan on growing old here in San Diego. We'll need well trained nurses to help us age gracefully. 💜 👏 🤗 🤝 💜 Telecare Corporation in #SanDiego has started receiving new leases for our 5th Permanent Supportive Housing Program. Tiffany Roberts and her team work around the clock to provide mental health resources, case management and linkage for 4 other PSH Sites currently, and now have a 5th site. “Transforming hotels into supportive housing is a way to get people off the streets and into homes more quickly,” Mayor Todd Gloria said. “This Homekey project demonstrates the power of collaboration between the State, City, County, and local partners to address homelessness more effectively. Along with the other five Homekey projects in the City of San Diego, Presidio Palms pushes the total new homes created through this program to 608 – each one an opportunity for San Diegans to rebuild their lives.” from https://lnkd.in/gMyyvanw
