My editorial from 2017 perhaps helped accelerate this? :) "The big tech companies argument, that the industry suffers from a shortage of workers, is false and misleading. Big tech companies take advantage of the H1B program to drive their bottom line. The law permits companies to lay off their own employees in favor of foreign workers doing the work in the states or overseas. Think about that. Everyone's chasing the obvious picks: -The one with the famous founder -The company with the flashiest pitch deck -The startup that's already getting press coverage The real winners are quietly building. At Series A: → Tesla was bleeding cash and Elon wasn't even involved yet. → Hotmail couldn't afford the servers for their free service - literally running out of infrastructure while users flooded in. → Skype was dealing with legal issues that made investors nervous. → Oklo faced regulatory nightmares that seemed impossible to overcome. → Coinbase was getting attacked from both sides. Purists said they were too centralized, banks wanted them gone. These companies looked messy. But they were solving real problems for real people, even if it looked ugly doing it.

Chase Norlin liked thisChase Norlin liked thisAfter a few decades of doing this work, I've seen my share of incredible companies go out of business or sell for parts. How can a truly great company go out of business, you ask? Great is good, right? Here's the kind of story you need to hear right now. You can have a great company and a bad cap table. Great companies become troubled companies once the cap table is misaligned to the actual business. Most fundraising stories that don't end well are because a company ran out of money. The less common stories? Companies that raised too much. I've been there. I was also a seed investor in several great companies that ultimately had to shut down or sell. Here's the problem. If you have a great little business making $3M per year, but you raised $25M, you're in a pickle. You owe it to your investors to move heaven and earth in your attempt to return a multiple on that $25M. That usually means trying something more risky, going through unnatural contortions, and neglecting the customers that underpin your existing business. Just this week, I talked to three companies that have already raised $10M+ and now need to raise more just to survive. A misaligned cap table can cost an entrepreneur a decade of their working career. Or worse. How many working decades do you have in this life? The world is full of these stories. Remember Allbirds? They had a $4B IPO. Eventually sold for $39M. Extreme example, but still... Why am I telling you this? AI, of course. My latest telehealth company, Teligant, is entirely self-funded. If I'm honest, it's more comfortable spending other people's money, but experience told me to find product-market fit before complicating the cap table. What I didn't see coming was AI moving so fast. Talk about lucky timing. What used to take $1M can now be done for $100K. Or even much less. Having the best software in your space with the simplest cap table should be an aspiration. Being deep in AI, I've developed a sensitivity for spotting cap tables that don't match a founder's ambition or business model. It's getting easy to spot a 30-person company that could be 7. In 75% of the cases that I've seen recently, the founder can't see it yet. They are polishing their pitch decks. The mitigating factor is AI fluency. Many CEO's think AI is about writing code faster, spell-checking their social posts and correcting their email grammar. The disrupters understand it's about everything: engineering, product, support, marketing, sales, people. Every process goes under the knife. Every headcount gets called into question. "Doing more with less" couldn't be more apt right now. AI is democratizing code production, but far more importantly, it's collapsing economic frameworks within entrepreneurship. Odds are good you don't need to raise as much as you think—and your burn rate is way too high. AI fluency in your C-suite could be way too low. Fix that, and you might be able to right-size your cap table for the decade ahead.

A 17-chapter, 59,000-word biography with chapter notes, a bibliography, and an ISBN. Formatted for 6"×9" paperback. Copyedited. Fact-checked against 71 primary sources. Ready for Amazon. The subject: Dario Amodei, Anthropic, and the Race to Build and Survive Superintelligence. The tool: Claude, the AI his company built. Here's what the process actually looked like: I didn't type "write me a book" and get a book. I spent 100+ sessions over 4 weekend days as an editor, architect, and quality gatekeeper. Claude drafted. I directed, restructured, challenged, and approved every change. We ran 34 rounds of fact-checking. 100s of corrections. We found 1000s of em dashes — a telltale sign of AI prose — and cut them to 270. We rewrote 190 sentence openers. Removed 216 commas. Fixed 60+ broken sentence constructions the AI had generated and the AI then helped me find. Deliverables include .docx manuscript, continuity bible, Amazon marketing copy, back cover blurb, and full .js source code. The stylistic target was a handful of NYT bestselling biographies. That meant the AI had to learn to write less like an AI. The irony wasn't lost on me. Here's what surprised me most: the bottleneck was never taste. The AI could produce 4,000 words of polished prose in minutes. It could decide whether those words were the right words — whether a scene landed, whether a metaphor earned its place, whether a chapter ending resonated — that was entirely human. The bottleneck was the process. Build the outline, build the narrative arc, build out the chapters, and then fact check. I had never done this before so made countless mistakes. I could do this in half the time if I did it again. The future of writing in the near term isn't AI replacing authors entirely. It's a new kind of collaboration where the human provides what the machine can't. However, that portion is diminishing fast and authors' days are numbered. The book is called The Scaling Curve. And the most fitting part? I used Anthropic's own AI to write the definitive account of Anthropic's story. The scaling curve is real. I just lived it.
