Carielys A. Johnson shared thisCongratulations to my beautiful and intelligent prima! I am so very proud of you. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 #latinasinleadership #representationmattersCarielys A. Johnson shared thisCongratulations to Ellen Barlis, Chief Financial Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi/North Central Bronx and Maria Arias-Clarke, Chief Financial Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens for their highlight in Becker's Hospital Review. According to the Crist Kolder Volatility Report, the number of women holding CFO positions at Fortune 500 and S&P 500 companies has nearly doubled over the past decade. Women made up 16 percent of CFOs in 2022. Female CFOs of hospitals and health systems skillfully handle strategic financial planning, annual budgets, investments and more. Ellen Barlis is responsible for the financial health of NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi/North Central Bronx, which were fiscally merged under her supervision. She oversees utilization management, revenue cycle operations, budgeting, capital projects, grant management, data and analytics, and the new products and therapeutics committee. In partnership with clinical leaders, she is establishing programs to improve access and health equity for the Bronx community. Her guidance supported the implementation of a new cardiac catheterization program, primary stroke center, robotic surgery program, and PRIDE center. She also boosted the quality and safety program, which culminated in an improved CMS star rating. Maria Arias-Clarke oversees all financial operations at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, including oversight of the affiliation agreement with New York City-based Mount Sinai. She provides financial oversight of hospital operations, strategic leadership, budget, patient accounts and payroll. Additionally, she plays a fundamental leadership role in ongoing transformation efforts aimed at securing and recouping funds the hospital needs to provide its patients with quality care. She brings more than 25 years of experience in financial management and administrative operations to her role. She is also a member of the hospital's senior cabinet, a group that supports decision-making and communication efforts for the hospital.

Umeh MD, FASA, FASRA, anesthesiologist at HSS, will represent our institution at the Asian Oceanic Society of Regional Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine (AOSRA-PM) Annual Conference in Seoul, South Korea. At the conference, Dr. Umeh will contribute to the global exchange of knowledge in anesthesiology and pain medicine through participation in two expert panel discussions and an ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia workshop. “These international conferences bring together clinicians, researchers, and educators from around the world,” Dr. Umeh shared. “It's an opportunity to learn from different perspectives, challenge our own practices, and ultimately improve patient care.” For Dr. Umeh, this opportunity reflects the importance of lifelong learning in a field that is constantly evolving. As new techniques and technologies continue to shape anesthesiology and pain medicine, collaboration and knowledge-sharing remain critical to advancing patient care. Through leadership in regional anesthesia, patient safety, and physician education, HSS continues to help drive innovation both locally and globally. Dr. Umeh's participation highlights the value of international collaboration and our commitment to advancing the future of anesthesiology and pain management. We look forward to the insights, connections, and experience she will bring back to HSS following the conference. https://aosrapm2026.org/

It was incredible to be part of such a well-curated gathering of bright minds with so many thoughtful perspectives, meaningful dialogue, and a true sense of magnetic energy in one room. As I think about her legacy, I realize part of the reason that song stayed with me is because it validated two things I’ve always believed: don’t judge a book by its cover, and treat everyone with respect. Dolly saw a coat her mother made from scraps as something made with love. Others saw poverty and laughed at her. Her mother connected the coat to the biblical story of Joseph, someone who was rejected and mistreated, yet eventually became the very person his family needed. You never know someone’s story, their potential, or where life will take them. Don’t judge. Treat people with respect. And always choose kindness. 💕 Do you have a favorite Dolly song/moment?

Early in my career at Stardust Gifts, I had the privilege of working with Camille, who took me under her wing as I went from salesperson to assistant manager. She taught me something simple: always lead with a smile. At the time, it was about customers. But over the years, that lesson became so much more. I learned that leading with a smile makes you approachable. It creates an environment where people feel comfortable speaking up, sharing an idea, challenging yours, or simply saying, “I see this differently.” Some of the best collaboration I’ve experienced throughout my career started because people knew their voices were welcome. It’s funny how a lesson someone gives you early in your career can stay with you…and grow right along with you. Camille probably had no idea how far that lesson would travel, but I’m still carrying it today. Who is one person you’ve worked with that you’d work with again tomorrow, and what did they teach you that you still carry today?
