Bias for Action: There has been no shortage of recent verbiage about the massive undertaking needed to revitalize American manufacturing capacity. From the Wall Street Journal, to the Reindustrialize Conference in Detroit, much has been pontificated about what should be done, with what funding, and on what timeline. While talking and planning are key to charting the course, at some point, talk needs to become action. With this backdrop, I am pleased to have been part of the Ownership group that has acquired Reuther Mold & Manufacturing, which we have recently renamed to Momentous Mold & Machine - formerly Reuther Mold. Momentous has a rich history of building complex, high consequence hard metal tooling for a variety of industries. The 60,000+ square foot shop has over 30 CNC spindles, although the real highlight is the 60+ person staff that has a combined 2000+ years of tool and mold building experience. All of this capability is backed by ITAR registration and an AS9100 approved Quality Management System. We are very excited to officially announce this project. Ozinga has broken ground on what will be North America’s largest low-carbon cement mill, located in East Chicago, Indiana. This is more than a manufacturing investment—it’s a generational commitment to: ✅ Reshoring American 🇺🇸 manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports ✅ Creating 150+ construction and full-time jobs for the region and beyond ✅ Achieving net zero concrete by 2030 ✅ Producing 1 million tons per year of low-carbon cementitious products, utilizing locally sourced recycled raw materials ✅ Avoiding over 700,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually ✅ Meeting the low carbon demands of AI data centers and other mission-critical infrastructure throughout North America We’re grateful to collaborate with Gebr. It’s great to see the Chicago Business Journal reporting on the upcoming Grand Opening of our new facilities in Chicago’s Fulton Market area, and why the city is a perfect fit for Pure Lithium as we drive toward commercial production of our lithium metal battery. “Some of the world’s leading battery experts are in Chicago,” said Emilie Bodoin, Pure Lithium Founder and CEO. “Our plan is to remain in Illinois when we move forward from prototyping to full commercial production,” said Bodoin. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new facility is planned for Oct. 21. Pure Lithium expects to create 50 jobs at its Chicago operation, which will focus on prototyping. Pure Lithium expects to remain in Illinois when it moves forward into full commercial production. While de-funding state MEPs aligns with a broader goal of privatizing government services, academic research indicates that MEPs fill a market gap by providing affordable technical assistance to small manufacturers who might otherwise lack access to purely private consulting services, particularly in rural areas. Economic studies suggest that government-supported manufacturing extension services can yield significant return on investment through job creation, increased productivity, and strengthened supply chains – critical factors in America’s manufacturing competitiveness strategy. The MEPs have also facilitated more private small consultants by introducing them to manufacturers for specific services. Essentially creating and sustaining a market and exemplifying the public private partnership it was designed to achieve. All of this begs the question – what does bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. actually mean in practice? Much of it is already here, albeit on a smaller scale, enabled in part by the MEPs. Should the future of U.S. manufacturing be a blend of large and small, regional and local, private and state funded, each supported and encouraged by federal and state funding, or should it be left to the private sector entirely and, if so, what role does tariff policy play in these decisions? Given that most of American manufacturing is Small and Medium Sized, 95% by many measures, it makes perfect sense for Governments, States and the private sector to invest in building small to medium and medium to large if we truly aim to make the US a manufacturing superpower. The PPI that is the MEP is an underplayed and maybe under-utilized network that can roll out coordinated and prioritized technology transfer and other initiatives as well as provide the day to day support that SMMs (Small to Medium Manufacturers) need to be efficient, effective, and competitive. One of the highlights of my week was attending the Toledo Women’s Leadership Summit alongside other inspiring women from O-I. Keynote speaker, business visionary, CEO, and incredible mother Kat Cole left me reflecting deeply on how we lead ourselves and our teams.
