Annie Boneta reacted on thisAnnie Boneta reacted on thisIt is Day 163 living with cancer and I opened my Blue Shield of California’s “Explanation of Benefits,” and I s l o w l y read through numbers that honestly did not feel real. One chemo infusion costs $66,534.91. I paused, stared at the page, and quietly tried to make sense of what I was seeing. Nothing about that number feels human when you are simply trying to stay alive. The statement shows a “network savings” of $50,471.43, which sounds generous until you realize it is part of a system that inflates first and explains later. Then it shows $16,063.48 as the insurance responsibility, and somehow I am still left asking, why does this feel so unclear, so complicated, and so distant from reality? I am not questioning the care, because the care is real, and the people showing up for me are real, and the treatment is giving me a chance to keep fighting. I am questioning the experience of trying to understand it all while carrying the emotional weight of a diagnosis that already asks everything from you. I have now completed 10 infusions, and I am preparing for my 11th on Monday, which means this single line item, just the infusion itself, has crossed $731,884.01. That number sits heavy, not because I am responsible for all of it, but because it represents a system that most people never fully understand until they are forced to. At the same time, I have intentionally invested meaningful time with my ‘Emotional Home Team,’ which includes both close friends and family members who consistently show up, listen deeply, and hold me steady when things feel uncertain. Those conversations, those check-ins, and those moments of steady presence have become just as important as any treatment plan, because healing is not only physical, it is also deeply emotional. Today I went to a Boston Red Sox game with my Brothers, Mom, Nieces, and Family Friends, and we shared laughter, stories, food, and moments that reminded me why I continue to fight so hard. It’s late and my flight back to Los Angeles leaves in eight hours, yet I am sitting here reflecting on how life continues to move forward even when everything inside you is trying to catch up. Life does not pause while you try to decode healthcare, and cancer does not wait for clean billing statements. So here is what I want to share, especially if you are healthy, busy, and not thinking about this yet. Advocate for yourself early, ask questions even when they feel uncomfortable, and take the time to understand how your coverage actually works before you need it. Do not assume the system will explain itself clearly when the stakes become personal. And most importantly, do not wait for a moment like this to realize that your voice matters inside rooms that were not designed to make things simple. If this post does anything, I hope it encourages you to slow down, to ask better questions, and to stand up for yourself before you are forced to. Because clarity should not require a diagnosis.

Since his start, Aaron’s worked long hours, in every department. 🗓️ In fact, once, during his first year, Aaron worked “97-1/2 hours in a week!!!” Tho, I didn’t congratulate him for a couple days because I was a lil disappointed he didn’t hit “100 hrs.” 🫣 🙏 Thanks Aaron for sticking thru my years of fear and discovering your talent in “sales,” even breaking all my sales records! 🍱 We were lucky that our Sushi Chef was Tatsu, just like back in 2008, preparing, Omakase style. Annie Boneta reacted on thisAnnie Boneta reacted on thisToday marks the 14th anniversary of me saying goodbye to being Starbucks chief legal officer AND practicing law. It’s stunning to me this milestone comes 1 week after PaulaBoggsBand released our 5th studio album “Sumatra.” I’ve learned and lived a lot these 14 years. I helped raise a child who’s now a thriving adult. I worked on a presidential campaign. Loved ones have left this realm and I grieve their loss. For the first time in my adult life I live minutes from mom and see her more in a month than I used to in years. My spouse and I have been blessed with each other over half my life. We are both artists. I left SBUX hoping to become CEO of my life. In 2012 I wasn’t sure what that could mean. It was sort of like my US Army Airborne days, jumping from a perfectly well functioning plane into unknown. But like the paratrooper I once was the parachute keeps deploying with mystery, unforeseen curves at times but as the lyric in one of my songs goes, “forward only works as an action verb.” I’m happy I leaped in 2012 and even happier I can still leap. The photo on the left was taken my first week at Starbucks working as a barista in 2002 — I was a better general counsel because of that two week stint. Where do I look? How do I not look stiff or… weird? And the biggest one… How do I actually look like myself? Then I realized something: The photographer makes all the difference. I just did a photoshoot in NYC with Lisa Bousquet… and it completely changed my experience. Not even exaggerating when I say this: It felt like I was just hanging out with a friend. Because I was. No awkwardness. No overthinking. No trying to “perform.” Just being myself. And somehow, she captured exactly that. Lisa is truly magical at what she does. She doesn’t just take photos. She creates an environment where you can actually show up as you. And that shows in every single shot. It is called “The Myth of Manhood”. In the book, I examine what is perhaps the most ancient, pervasive, and persistent collective story of our species. One that influences everything from the wars we wage to the votes we cast, to the behaviors we praise and the ones we punish, and even whether the toilet-seat is left in the horizontal or vertical position. In order to explore the myth of manhood and its many causes and consequences, I introduce the concept of MPIs, “Manhood Performance Indicators”. I believe I need not explain for the LinkedIn audience what KPIs are. Many of you will have felt a slight cortisol spike simply reading that. MPIs are the cultural benchmarks for the beliefs and behaviors of men. Below is a taste of some of the chapters and the topics I will cover. 📌 “Meat is from Mars - Milk is from Venus” The story of “Man the Hunter” bringing home the meat and “Woman the gatherer” breastfeeding the infants in the camp is the original division of labour, that till this day influences the demographics of our workforce — and our dinner plates. 📌 “Fake it till She’s Naked” A man’s worth as an extension of his capacity to sire heirs. Today, we measure a man by his bedroom bodycount. This shows in the overemphasis of much dating advice and culture on the time and tactics leading up to sex — and the glaring silence on everything that comes after. 📌 “Make America Hate Again” Hmm. I will actually let your imagination fill in the blanks on this one 🙂 Wild guesses are welcome. 📌 “Treating Cancer Like A Cold” The origins and consequences of the male disdain for pain, both physical and emotional. How boys are taught to transmute all emotions into either anger or apathy, what that costs them, the people around them — and how it shapes the demographics of the therapist's waiting room. ——— The book doesn’t have a launch date just yet.
