They saw status. Not a product shift. A perception flip. → Packaging designed for Instagram, not pantries → Pricing that ignored the category → A hashtag that turned dinner into a vibe: #tinnedfishdatenight The results? → $0 to $6M in 4 years → 1,800+ stores, including Whole Foods → Gen Z treating sardines like a charcuterie flex Here’s what most brands get wrong: They try to win inside the category. Fishwife escaped it. They didn’t compete with canned fish. They competed with wine nights. Same product. Different opponent. That’s the move. Because the fastest way to grow isn’t improving the product. It’s redefining what game you’re playing. So here’s the uncomfortable question: Are you stuck competing… Or playing the wrong game entirely? Most brands don’t lose to competitors. They lose to misclassification. I just corrected a 43-year mistake for a global destination. The difference is night and day. If your category is wrong, nothing else will work. Time to fix that.
