Aly Sether liked thisAly Sether liked thisIt’s been a little while since I’ve shared on here… But as I approach four years at Arctic Wolf, and in cybersecurity, I’ve taken a moment to reflect and wanted to share it with you all. Five years ago, I entered cybersecurity thinking I was simply learning tools, alerts, and investigations. Over time, I’ve come to realize something much bigger… We don’t just secure environments. We protect outcomes. We protect people. When I think about our work as cybersecurity engineers, it reminds me of running a city. Each client environment is like a township. Our responsibility is to ensure visibility, stability, and protection, eliminating blind spots where threats can emerge. And when we do that well, the impact cascades: A 911 call connects when someone needs help A hospital remains operational A business stays open so employees can provide for their families But the opposite is also true. When environments aren’t secure, the consequences implode: Factories shut down Operations halt People miss paychecks Communities feel the impact That’s the weight, and the privilege, of what we do. This responsibility doesn’t rest on any one person. But collectively, as cybersecurity practitioners, engineers, analysts, and IT professionals, we share a duty: A duty to stay sharp A duty to care A duty to protect Because IT isn’t just “support.” It is the backbone of modern society. And most of the time… no one notices. Until something breaks. As said in one of my favorite Futurama episodes (Season 4, Episode 8, titled "Godfellas"): “When you do things right, people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all.” - An IT motto for sure! This week, I celebrate four years at Arctic Wolf. Grateful for the journey. Grateful for the growth. Grateful for the people. Grateful to be part of something that truly matters. To my peers, those entering the field, and everyone in IT: What we do matters more than we realize. Let’s keep going. Let’s keep improving.
