Avinash Kaushik shared thisMethodologies matter more than metrics. Challenge yours, please. Exhibit #4981: How VTC is calculated by Ad Platfforms. Every platform has slightly different variation of what the metric's definition is, with different (and configurable!) attribution windows, and dramatically different "viewability" requirements to compute the result. End results: A. It is very hard to understand performance in a single channel (and if that is solving for you or the Ad Platform). B. It is impossible to compare the performance across channels (chalk and cheese). C. Intelligently reallocate your budget. This leads to data-influence lowering, the undesirable "gut instinct" rising, and in the end the business losing. In this instance, I simply take the metric and the methodology out of the hands of the Ad Platforms, and do it myself inside my own company. You might choose a different path. Either way... torture the methodologies behind the metrics and God will smile on you. 💸 #analytics #marketing

Avinash Kaushik shared thisWith statistics, is Google playing a game of "heads I win, tails you lose?" You spend thousands/millions of dollars on your YouTube brand campaigns and Google performance campaigns. You are super smart. You refuse vanity-adjacent metrics. You insist on a incremental impact signal from high sample Brand Lift Studies and Conversion Lift Studies - both Google will execute for you. 🎉 Then Google reports the conversion/brand lift labeling 70 -90% certainty a "good chance," saying 50-70% can be used "directionally," and even lower-certainty results can "still help future advertising investments." G Official guidance: https://zqi.me/gcertain, Who is this "good chance" good for? In their article, Google has one line saying advertisers should "interpret results to their own business needs, and risk tolerance." Wonderful, let's do that. Are Google recommended "good chance," "directional," also good for you? Intentionally or unintentionally, the answer is that it is good for Google. In my newsletter today, I've used a simple Bayesian replication model, inspired by biostatistician Steven Goodman, to compute three metrics that take the business owner lens at the results: In english... Chances that you will get even a tiny fragment (+0.01) lift if you spend money again, the replication risk of your venture, and the chances that the results will be at a confidence you can give them to your CFO. Google sells advertising. You own the risk. Help yourself, help yourself. I've also shared a working Excel model of all of these KPIs and a calculator you can punch in your latest Google Brand, Conversion, Search results to see what the Business Owner Lens says about your results. Don't outsource your tolerance for risk to the company selling you the ads. #analytics #marketing

Avinash Kaushik shared thisThere are many ways to get user feedback (AND actively listen). My favorite kind? Hacks customers build to get around company products/tactics/strategy. If someone's willing to go that far... Something's really off. There have been waves of complaints about the relevance/quality of Google's AI Overviews. The latest includes instructions for permanently changing your browser's use of Google (on the left), plus an entire one-page website to make Google simpler: https://udm14.com Such "hacks" feedback is frequently dismissed by companies as "oh, it's a silly little minority." In this instance, I suspect most Google users will stick to default cluttered experience. Still... There is a volume of feedback at which I see it as a canary protending something bigger off with the product strategy. Hence, in my practice I advocate for active listening to active hacking. I love using them to break through the natural closed off caves in which all senior leaders at all big companies end up. The outcome does not have to be to roll back. The hacks can inspire the next generation of innovation. Customers are not always right, but they do always have the right to complain... And, at some point I listen and recommend it is profitable for you to do so as well. #analtyics #marketing.

Avinash Kaushik shared thisIs your analytics strategy CRAP or CARE? One of my older slides, still deeply relevant, quoting Mikko. CARE seems so obvious. Yet organizational silos, whether cultural or built into the org design, push companies toward CRAP. So does treating Analytics primarily as data puking, sorry, reporting and dashboards. And so does the distance between "Analysts" and leadership. Companies often end up in CRAP unintentionally. In the end, this is not a data or analyst problem. It is a leadership, process, and incentives problem. Live in CARE. Obviously. #analytics

Avinash Kaushik shared thisAre you a "Reporting Squirrel" or an "Analysis Ninja"? Test yourself: What does this fascinating report get right? What might it get wrong? And what's actively poisonous? 🙃 We tend to use "reporting" and "analysis" interchangeably. That's a mistake. A simple way to frame the difference: Reporting asks: What information was requested? Analysis asks: What decision are we trying to improve? For the second one, there are a series of questions to answer and steps to take. Each helps produce a higher-quality decision. I used the table below as a jumping-off point to explore the difference between reporting and analysis, using a very important question: Where should you eat the best pizza in Rome? The approach applies to almost every area of your work. It can help you produce more relevant insights and deeper impact. So... what's up with the table below? 😉 #analytics

Avinash Kaushik shared thisConversion Rate is most often Orders/Sessions, which drives CONVERT NOW silly behavior. Change the definition to Order/Users, the incentive now is to understand the consumer journey. A small change in your Finance Dashboard, a big cascading change in cultural incentives. It is ok now for Users to have 50 sessions (or visits) or 3. In the end, you still get rewarded if they convert. Hence, you focus on identifying why segment one needs so many visits and why segment two needs 3. You'll dig into sources and motivations of the humans. The landing page "scent" for that specific intent. You might not push the promo into their faces, or you might. Then, and this is the best, you might leverage AI better - rather than pushing AI hard to treat every visit as a single night stand, you'll tell the AI "hey, understand the consumer journey, and at each step of it, deliver the relevant content to the user's intent (and only sometimes that content is an ad)". AI happier using full intelligence. Users are happier with increased relevance. CFO is happier with, what else, 😘 increased profits. All from a little shift in a metric's definition. Carpe diem. #analytics #marketing PS: If you follow my advice above, then the sweet, sweet attribution awesomeness that is in your analytics tool finally becomes magnificiently useful. To appease the LinkedIn algorithm, I'll do the non-user-friendly "link in comments."

Avinash Kaushik shared thisDoes your company measure up to this benchmark of true customer-centricity? Bravo Costco Wholesale! The text reads: "No regular unleaded gas available. Premium gas price has been reduced to the price of regular to accomodate. Regular will be available on 8/14. We apologize for the inconvenience." Honestly, few would have complained. Some would have gotten Premium, others might have gone to other gas stations. I'm confident not a single person would have canceled their Costco membership. Still. Costco went above and beyond the call of duty. The difference between saying you are "customer centric" or "put the customer at the center" yada yada and actually doing it. [PS: I noticed the other day that I've been a Costco member for 29 years - longer than my marriage, kids, and everything else!] Credit where credit's due: Costco Warehouse in Superior, Colorado. Vendor questionnaires have become a default control, yet most organizations admit they rarely change outcomes or reduce real third party risk. Treating questionnaires as a proxy for assurance creates process comfort without operational confidence, especially when controls are never validated or tied to data flows. Security and risk leaders should refocus on continuous evidence, enforceable controls, and workflows that verify how sensitive data is actually handled. #ThirdPartyRisk #VendorRisk #CyberRisk #RiskManagement #Kiteworks

With CVS’s Vertical Empire Under Threat in Tennessee, the Company Threatens to Leave. A bipartisan Tennessee bill targets the company’s control over insurers, pharmacies and drug pricing — prompting a full-scale pressure campaign built on closure threats and fear of lost access. Most people think of CVS as a drug store, but it’s a lot more than that. Not only does it operate more than 9,000 retail stores – 134 in my home state of Tennessee – it also owns Aetna health plans. But as big as those divisions of this megaconglomerate are, it actually gets more revenue from a subsidiary that is far less well known: Caremark. CVS Caremark is a pharmacy benefit manager, one of the three biggest in the country, along with Cigna’s Express Scripts and UnitedHealth’s Optum Rx. Together these giant middlemen control 80% of the middle part of the pharmacy supply chain. For most Americans, those PBMs determine which medications we’ll have access to and how much we’ll have to pay out of our own pockets to take those medications home. For CVS, being a giant conglomerate that includes health insurance, retail pharmacies and a huge PBM is very profitable, and it has enabled the company to leap up the Fortune 500 list of U.S. corporations in recent years. It has also enabled the company to push independent pharmacies out of business. Tennessee alone has seen 815 pharmacy closures over the past decade, including 163 in the last three years and 62 in 2024 alone. Notably, this wave of closures has occurred under the current framework that allows vertically integrated companies like CVS to own both pharmacies and an enormous PBM. In both Washington and many state capitals, including Nashville, lawmakers have introduced bills that would break those companies up. One such bill is Tennessee Senate Bill 2040, sponsored by Sen. Bobby Harshbarger, a Republican from Kingsport, and Rep. Rick Scarbrough of Oak Ridge. Their bill would prohibit any entity from simultaneously owning both a pharmacy and a pharmacy benefit manager. The core idea is to break up “vertical integration” — where it owns a health insurer, a PBM and retail pharmacy chains all under one roof. PBM-affiliated pharmacies would be required to divest or restructure by January 1, 2028. The legislation has a strong factual foundation behind it. A 2024 audit by the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance found that CVS Caremark used “spread pricing” — charging certain health plans more for a medication than what pharmacies are actually paid to dispense it. Independent pharmacists have been vocal supporters, with some describing being forced to sell drugs below cost because of the reimbursement rates PBMs set. CVS, Cigna, and UnitedHealth together managed nearly 79% of prescription drug claims in 2023, and in 2024 the FTC sued all three for allegedly inflating insulin prices. https://lnkd.in/gcYeMhkV

This new WSJ article says that companies are “desperately seeking storytellers.” https://lnkd.in/ed4FuCrB From my experience, most brands already have stories. They just don’t know how to structure them for discovery. I see this constantly: • Great narratives that never rank in search • Strong POVs that AI tools can’t surface • Content teams producing more but not building smarter Storytelling today requires understanding how stories are indexed, summarized, and cited by both search engines and LLMs. This is exactly the gap I’ve been spending time teaching lately, and why education around SEO combined with storytelling and AI is long overdue. How important do you think that storytelling will be in 2026?

AI's 2026 ROI reckoning starts now. In our first episode of The Hidden Future of AI, our forecasters deliver the three hardest truths every Enterprise leader must face to survive this pivot: 1. The great AI ROI reckoning: If you can't show business impact in three to six months, you're done. 2. The rise of true autonomous agents: Agents now make decisions and adapt without a human script. 3. The forward-deployed engineer Boom: FDEs will be the highest-paid talent for integrating AI with legacy systems. This is one of four sessions in The Hidden Future of AI series. #AgenticCommerce is moving fast, and Richard Crone’s post below makes a simple point every CEO and board should hear: if you let AI agents control discovery and checkout, value quietly shifts away from your brand. In a recent The Wall Street Journal piece I co‑authored with Brian McCarthy and Roland Ehi, my argument is that winners will be the companies that keep the buying decision, the data, and the payment flow inside their own ecosystem – and make AI work for them, not around them. Adding the article link here for anyone shaping their agentic commerce strategy, keeping agentic commerce optimization (#ACO) in mind: https://lnkd.in/eY9xQptJ If your scenarios are “do nothing” or “light experimentation”, they aren’t neutral or no-regret options. These will actually destroy margin, weaken your customer relationship, and compress your multiple over time. Going “all-in” is the only scenario that will pay off, but tha will happen only when leaders treat product pages, checkout, and customer data as strategic assets, with clear rights, controls, and monetization. Agent-to-Agent (#A2A) is disrupting the game faster than you think. Prepare for it or risk getting disintermediated. Choice is yours!

The 2026 State of AI Agents Report | Prepared by Claude (by Anthropic) This benchmark report provides a definitive analysis of the enterprise transition from passive generative AI to the era of "Agentic Workflows." As organizations move beyond simple chatbots and prompt-based assistance, the report identifies 2026 as the pivotal year where AI agents—systems capable of autonomous reasoning, multi-step planning, and tool execution—become a standard component of the modern production environment. By synthesizing data from early adopters and industry leaders, the analysis explores how agentic systems are reshaping internal operations and customer-facing services, moving from experimental prototypes to mission-critical infrastructure that drives measurable Return on Investment (ROI). The core of the research highlights a significant shift in deployment strategies, where "agentic coding" and autonomous software development lifecycle (SDLC) management emerge as the most mature use cases. The report examines how sectors such as healthcare, financial services, and life sciences are utilizing agents to handle complex, data-intensive workflows—ranging from automated fraud detection to expedited drug discovery. From a systemic perspective, the paper argues that the competitive advantage of the 2026 enterprise is defined by its "agentic readiness," which requires a holistic alignment of technical architecture, data governance, and organizational culture. Furthermore, the analysis addresses the critical challenges of agentic trust and safety, advocating for "human-in-the-loop" oversight models to manage the autonomy of these systems. Ultimately, Anthropic concludes that the path forward involves internalizing AI agents as proactive collaborators rather than mere tools, fostering a new economic architecture where autonomous action preserves long-term institutional value and accelerates global innovation. #AIAgents #AgenticAI #DigitalTransformation #FutureOfWork #EnterpriseAI #Anthropic #AIROI

Why Investigators Need AI-OSINT Skills Now AI is no longer “emerging tech” in investigations, it’s embedded in every part of the online landscape. Whether you’re looking at personas, posts, images, or transaction trails, AI is generating, remixing, or obscuring data at scale. Investigators who ignore this shift will struggle to: • Validate online evidence • Detect deepfakes • Understand synthetic personas • Keep pace with automated adversaries • Maintain OPSEC in AI-indexed environments AI isn’t replacing investigators. But investigators who use AI will replace those who don't. Learn more in the OSINT Force Multiplier — only available as a package for 30 days. https://lnkd.in/gNpyTbKx
