  • Check out insights from Vertex's Chairman of the Board William (Bill) McConnell, who examines construction industry data from the first half of the year.

First Half of 2026 Construction Update: The Construction Industry Is Still Searching for a Bottom The first half of 2026 has been tough for construction. Through June, U.S. construction growth is down 3.2%, marking another difficult period for an industry that has now experienced negative growth for roughly 18 months. Coming into 2026, I expected moderate growth. That scenario is still possible—but at this point, I’d put the odds at less than 50%. The problem? Inflation remains stubbornly above the Fed’s 2% target, which keeps rates high. PPI for construction materials is up 14% since January 2025, putting renewed pressure on project costs and margins. At the same time, geopolitical uncertainty, tariffs, and massive investment in data centers are keeping costs elevated and pulling an already constrained construction workforce toward a handful of mega projects. The sector data tells the story: · Residential: -4.7% YoY, by far the largest construction sector · Manufacturing: -21.4% YoY, no longer the largest non-residential sector · Office: +12.5% YoY, largely reflecting the data center boom · Power: +3.5% YoY and now the largest non-residential construction sector The shift in the non-residential market is particularly noteworthy. Manufacturing, which had been one of the industry's strongest growth engines, has fallen sharply, while power and data center construction are driving much of the remaining growth. So, where do we go from here? If rates begin to come down, residential construction could provide the catalyst for a broader recovery. But if inflation remains elevated and rates stay higher for longer, 2026 could end up being another year of contraction for the construction industry. My bottom line: The construction market isn't in free fall—but it is clearly in a period of adjustment. The next few months will be critical. What are you seeing in your part of the construction market?

  • As the number, size, and intensity of wildfires in the western US and Canada increases, the convergence of the wildland-urban interface (WUI) adds additional layers of complexity for insurers, industrial hygienists, property owners, and restoration contractors. Can a property affected by a WUI fire be returned to a pre-loss condition? How can it be determined if a property is acceptable to return to occupancy? In a new article, Vertex's Thomas Koch, CIH MS WELL AP and Alex Johnsen, M.S., CIH explain how WUI combustion byproducts differ from wildland fires and considerations for post-remediation efforts.
