Today, on #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience, we celebrate team members redefining what’s possible in #fusion. From optimizing our planar coil #stellarator architecture to scaling magnet manufacturing, fusion requires the world’s best minds, and we are proud to have women leading the way. 📸 Pictured below, a few of our team members: Anna Raffin is a senior manufacturing engineer, currently focused on building planar coil magnets for Eos as well as designing cable elements for ‘Iris’, Thea Energy’s first encircling coil. Anna brings to the team expertise in supply chain management and product development from prior roles across the space launch and sustainable agriculture industries. Claire Chen, HTS magnet engineer, is developing test models and design tools for our planar shaping and encircling coils. Claire provides end-to-end support for magnet development, contributing to the entire process from initial design through testing and performance validation. Claire’s experience spans scenario development as well as topology optimization in magnetic confinement fusion systems. Jihye Jeon, Ph.D., is a fusion scientist with extensive expertise in fusion regulations, neutron physics, and radiation detection technologies. As a member of the Fusion Systems team, Jihye leads neutron activation calculations, radiation safety, and waste management, while navigating the licensing process for fusion machines. She also provides critical support for the blanket design of Eos and Helios, ensuring these systems effectively protect personnel and hardware, breed tritium, and optimize heat extraction. Risham Parmar, materials engineer, has expertise in materials processing, failure analysis, and modeling. How do we test magnets at 20 K here in NJ (for reference, that’s about 10x colder than the surface of Mars)? Meet 'Big Bird'! Big Bird is our integrated test cell where we operate Eos-spec superconducting magnets at 20 K. When cooled to this temperature, these magnets act as superconductors, creating strong magnetic fields with zero resistance. In a #stellarator, these magnetic fields are what confine and control a plasma, the fuel of #fusion. The Big Bird integrated system was engineered in-house and includes all the required sub-systems for our core technology including vacuum and cryogenics, instrumentation and control, power supplies, and structures. Big Bird was designed to provide easy access for quickly swapping in Eos-spec magnets between test and final acceptance. We’ve validated our core tech and also have built our initial manufacturing line that can scale to meet rate requirements for Eos, our upcoming large-scale integrated stellarator, and then subsequent Thea Energy fusion power plants. Now onto scaling our manufacturing lines even further and building hundreds of simpler stellarator magnets!
