🎉 SAXBYS IS OFFICIALLY OPEN IN TEXAS! 🎉 Last week, The University of Texas at Arlington officially opened the first student-run experiential learning cafe in the state. The cafe’s grand opening event was an amazing kick-off to this valued partnership. The speeches from Provost Tamara L. Brown and our first Student CEO in Texas, the UTA Cheer Team's performance, and the energy from UTA students, faculty, staff, and guests from six universities made this a grand opening to remember. Saxbys isn't your average cafe on campus. It's a true leadership laboratory where students build real financial responsibility, team management skills, and relationships with their community. Our Inaugural Student CEO, Kiley Vaughan, is now ready to manage a real business, lead 45+ peers, and serve thousands of guests alongside her team. They're building the Maverick Advantage one shift at a time and wee couldn't be more proud. Welcome to the family, UTA. Let's go build something extraordinary and Make Life Better!

Strong partnerships create stronger student outcomes. Thank you, Sarah Napoli, for taking the time to learn more about Josh's experience as Student CEO and for highlighting the impact of learning through real responsibility. Seeing students like Josh Smiler step into leadership roles with confidence, ownership, and a commitment to leaving things better than they found them is one of the most rewarding parts of experiential learning. We're proud to partner with Drexel University to create meaningful opportunities for students to grow as leaders, problem-solvers, and changemakers. Together, we're helping prepare the next generation of leaders through experiences that extend far beyond the classroom.
Last week I sat down with Josh Smiler, Student CEO of the Saxbys LeBow Cafe. While I always see him working hard to serve our students, faculty, and staff, I didn't completely appreciate all that happens behind the scenes! Our conversation gave me a deeper appreciation for the Student CEO role and the unique experiential learning opportunity it provides. In addition to fully running the cafe, Josh shared the three pillars of the role: team development, community leadership, and financial management. What stood out most was the sense of ownership that comes with this role. Josh shared so many ideas for strengthening these pillars, not only to make a meaningful impact during his time as Student CEO, but also to set the next Student CEO up for success. That mindset of building something lasting is a powerful leadership lesson. As a professor, it's exciting to see our students applying what they learn in the classroom to real business challenges while developing the leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills that will benefit them throughout their careers. I am truly impressed by the experiential learning partnership that Drexel University and Saxbys have created. If you have a chance, stop by Drexel University's LeBow College of Business and place an order! My favorite is the Green Goals smoothie with vanilla protein.

We're hiring: Cafe Technology Support Specialist 💻☕ Every fall, Saxbys opens new cafes and welcomes existing cafes back for the busy fall semester — and we need someone great to help keep the tech running behind the scenes. We're looking for a Cafe Technology Support Specialist to join us for our peak opening season (Aug–Nov). This full-time, temporary role supports our POS Programmer & Cafe Support Analyst by handling Level 1 tickets across our cafes — troubleshooting day-to-day POS, hardware, and connectivity issues, coordinating with vendors, and helping our cafes go live without a hitch. This is a great fit for: → A recent grad or current student in IT, computer science, or a related field → Someone who wants real, hands-on tech support experience → Current or former Saxbys team members — you already know our culture and cafes, and that's a huge head start Toast POS experience is a bonus but not required. What matters most: you're a clear communicator, a sharp problem solver, and you stay steady when things get busy. Interested, or know someone who'd be a great fit? Check out the full posting and apply here: https://lnkd.in/g2FiwZzc #Hiring #TechJobs #RecentGrad #ITSupport #Saxbys

Thank you NACAS East for a fantastic conference and welcoming us into your community. We were lucky to moderate and sit on a "Mission Meets Margin" panel that explored how a multi-stakeholder partnership that Saxbys orchestrates between auxiliary services, dining partners, and academics can turn campus retail into experiential learning platforms — where students lead real businesses with P&L responsibility while earning academic credit. Huge thanks to our co-panelists and partners: Katybeth Lee and Lauren Hay from Virginia Commonwealth University, Bryan Kelly from Aramark, and Kris Klinger, Ed.D. Boston University. It was a true full-circle moment: we reconnected with VCU at NACAS East in 2025, shared the stage with them in 2026, and we're celebrating a grand opening this August. If you're in Virginia on August 25th, join us!

Most college students work while enrolled to earn needed income, but they can't secure the kind of paid, high-impact internship experiences that move the needle on career outcomes. The result is stark: 4.6 million students wanted an internship in 2023 and couldn't get one, many of the internships that do exist are unpaid, and 52% of recent graduates end up underemployed within a year of earning their degree. This isn't a student problem. It's a design problem and higher ed can solve it. On June 23, Nick Bayer, Saxbys CEO & Founder, Rosie Clark-Parsons, PhD, Director of Experiential Learning & Impact, and Melody Wozunk, Senior Manager of Brand & Partnerships Activation, join CEIA's ELEVATE Webinar Series to share the blueprint we've built to give more students paid, on-campus, credited, consequence-rich learning experiences and close that gap. "A Blueprint for Paid, Credited, Campus-Based Experiential Learning" is structured around three conversations: The framework. Our team shares the four principles behind our Experiential Learning Platform® – Paid, Consequential, On Campus, Credited – and how to deliver on each in practice. The panel. Kristen Gallo, Ed.D., Executive Director of the Career Center at Temple University and Patrick Francis, Director of Career Relations for Indianapolis at Purdue University share how their institutions are tackling the same structural design problem. The discussion. Audience members have the opportunity to delve into questions on specific application of our four principles and discuss how they tackle the internship shortage. You'll leave with a framework you can apply to fill the internship gap on your campus. 📅 Monday, June 23 Time: 2:00 - 3:00 pm EST Register: https://lnkd.in/et3ZkJ-h Join us in developing the future of experiential learning. We’ll provide the blueprint. As this semester starts to end, we want to celebrate Addie Eiland with her final LinkedIn series showcasing her term as Student CEO at Georgia State University. From leading through real-time challenges to building her team, strengthening financial performance, and showing up across campus, Addie truly brought all Three Pillars of Saxbys to life. Her impact goes far beyond the cafe and has helped shape a stronger community at Saxbys. Congratulations, Addie! Saxbys is excited to see what chapter you step into next. 👏
A semester ago, I thought leadership meant being the most capable person in the room — the most qualified, determined, and experienced. This role challenged that perspective in the best way. I’ve learned that leadership is not just about capability, but about building trust and giving people a reason to believe in and follow your lead. Through this experience, I’ve grown in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve learned how to be more intentional in building relationships with my team, our guests, and the broader campus community. I’ve also developed a strong foundation in the business side of operations — from reading a Profit & Loss statement to managing cost of goods and scheduling a team of 30+ students. But more than any technical skill, I’ve learned who I am when things don’t go as planned. Whether it was construction delays, broken equipment, or last-minute call-outs, I’ve come to understand that you can’t control every variable — only how you respond to it. Some of the most meaningful moments came from the simplest interactions — starting conversations with someone new, connecting over a cup of coffee, or watching a team member grow more confident in their role. Those moments reminded me that at the core of leadership is people. I stepped into this role as a student, and I’m leaving with a deeper sense of confidence in what I’ve built and what I’m capable of building next. I’m incredibly grateful to my team, my Operations Leads, the Georgia State University community, and Saxbys for making this experience so impactful. I’m excited to see what the next Student CEO at GSU accomplishes. This role has a way of shaping you in ways you don’t expect, and I have no doubt they’ll rise to it. #Leadership #Saxbys #SCEO #GeorgiaState Saxbys

Congratulations, Jovin Nicholas! Well earned! Your technical resume stands out on its own, but going deep technically while consistently putting yourself in positions to lead, teach, and build in the real world is a combination that will set you apart as you move forward into what's next. It's great to see your Saxbys experience helped teach you "a lot about people, ownership, and communication under pressure." Excited to follow what comes next!
Last week, I walked across the stage and graduated with my Master's in Software Engineering Systems from Northeastern University. I started this journey to go deeper into modern tech stack. Over the past two years, I built full stack projects, collaborated with teammates from diverse backgrounds, and pushed myself to learn by doing. My co-op at Open Health Agents introduced me to applied AI. That experience led me to explore further through certifications like the OCI GenAI, Anthropic MCP, and Google’s agent course. I also had the chance to build and win Best Innovative Project at a 24-hour hackathon. Outside the classroom, some of my most meaningful experiences came from unexpected places. Working as a Team Lead at Saxbys taught me a lot about people, ownership, and communication under pressure. Teaching as a Game Programming Instructor at Bridge to Calculus at Northeastern University gave me the chance to mentor high school students and see them build their first projects. Grateful for the people I met, the mentors who guided me, and the experiences that shaped me. Looking forward to what’s next. #NortheasternUniversity #ComputerEngineering #ArtificialIntelligence #SoftwareEngineering #Mentorship #HigherEducation #GoHuskies

Next stop: Richmond! Saxbys is coming to VCU! Saxbys is partnering with Virginia Commonwealth University to bring the Saxbys Experiential Learning Platform® to one of the nation's leading public research universities. VCU will be home to the 30th entirely student-led Saxbys Experiential Learning cafe. The new cafe in Snead Hall, home to VCU's School of Business, will operate as both a high-performing campus business and a paid, credit-bearing leadership laboratory. Dr. Brian Brown, Dean of the VCU School of Business said: "This collaboration between the School of Business and Saxbys reflects our deep commitment to preparing students for the realities of today's business world. By placing students in paid, credit-bearing leadership roles with true operational and financial accountability, we’re helping them graduate not just with a degree, but with the confidence, tools, and experience employers value. This is what free enterprise looks like in practice." We are thrilled to be supporting VCU's commitment to experiential learning and opportunity creation. This partnership would not have been possible without the support of Dr. Brown, as well as Stephen Barr, Ed.D., CASP, Lauren Hay, Jana McQuaid, Katybeth Lee, and Bryan Kelly. Applications are open to apply for the credited Student CEO role and to join the Saxbys VCU team (links to applications are in the full post linked below.) The cafe opens August 25, 2026.
