When #Veterans apply for disability benefits, they're asked to describe conditions in their own words, and the language doesn't always match what Veterans Affairs (VA)’s system expects. That mismatch meant VA staff were manually reviewing thousands of unclassified claims every week — and Veterans were waiting longer for decisions. Nava helped VA build a smarter classification system. One that combines traditional lookup tables with machine learning to handle the many ways a person might describe the same condition. Since launching, 100% of conditions are now automatically classified upon submission — saving an estimated 4,131 hours — or 172 days — of manual classification work annually. VA staff is now able to serve Veterans more effectively and efficiently and Veterans are getting answers on their decisions faster. Read the full case study to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gFEKihua

Congratulations to the State of Maine for launching their paid family medical leave (#PFML) program! We are thrilled that Maine is joining the growing number of states now offering PFML benefits and supporting families financially during life's most critical moments.
Beginning Monday, March 30, Mainers will be able to apply for benefits through the state’s new Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program! While applications can be submitted beginning on Monday, leave must occur on or after May 1, 2026, in order to be approved. The Paid Family and Medical Leave program provides up to 12 weeks of benefits for key life events. Benefits are flexible and portable. Eligible leave can be for: •Medical Leave: For times when a serious health condition keeps an individual from working. •Parental Leave: Time to bond with a new child. •Family Care Leave: Time to care for a loved one with a serious health condition. •Military Family Leave: Time to prepare for a family member’s deployment. •Safe Leave: Time to find safety when an individual or a family member is the victim of abuse, violence, or sexual assault. https://lnkd.in/eE5bQV32 has more information for workers who want to submit an application. The application and approval process will be administered by Aflac on behalf of the State of Maine.

#Opensource in government isn't a niche conversation anymore — and The George Washington University's Open Source Conference (GW OSCON) was another excellent proof point. Last week, our team was at GW OSCON — two days of sessions, panels, and honest conversations about the state of open source in government. Our Open Source Lead, Brandon Tabaska, wrote a piece that takes us through what stuck: 1. Open source isn't a technology preference anymore. It's infrastructure. When you're running services that millions of people depend on, the question isn't whether to use open source — it's how to sustain it. 2. Community is the real product. What determines whether an open source project actually succeeds is the people around it: contributors, maintainers, and agencies willing to build together instead of rebuilding in silos. 3. The open-vs.-closed debate in #AI is one of the most important conversations happening right now — especially for government, where transparency and auditability aren't nice-to-haves. 4. The business case for open source in government is getting easier to make — but it still requires champions. Our VP of Program Delivery, Marvin McLain, POPM, CSM, joined a panel on exactly that. Cory Trimm represented Nava Labs and shared learnings from building AI-powered caseworker tools. And our team also presented OSCER, our open source H.R. 1 compliance tool built for Medicaid systems. It’s clear that the institutional infrastructure for open source in government is growing, and Nava is proud to be part of it. Read our takeaways: https://lnkd.in/gtjnGrRW

Please give a warm, LinkedIn welcome to Nava’s new Vice President of Operations & Automation, Kelly Feeney! We are so excited to welcome Kelly to Nava,” said Sha Hwang, Nava’s COO and co-founder. “The typical government contracting operations playbook won’t get us where we need to go. Kelly’s leadership and experience in rapidly scaling environments will help us build operations that match the ambition, pace, and complexity of our delivery.” Read the full announcement: https://lnkd.in/gcCbXGek

Billions in public benefits go unclaimed every year. Not because people aren't eligible — but because the system is so complex that even the caseworkers guiding families face many challenges. Our team at Nava Labs set out to change that. We built a #GenAI-powered assistive chatbot designed to help caseworkers answer eligibility questions faster and more accurately — and then we rigorously evaluated it. The results from our first-of-its-kind study: – Caseworkers using the chatbot saw an estimated 40% improvement in accuracy — with the biggest gains on the hardest questions. – 65% of caseworkers with access actively used it during the 14-week real-world pilot across six organizations in Los Angeles County. – Chatbot responses came in at a 10th–12th grade reading level — still higher than ideal, but a major step up from the college-level policy manuals caseworkers typically rely on. – We also identified what makes adoption stick: organizational buy-in, peer support, and sustained engagement matter just as much as the technology itself. This isn’t about replacing staff, it’s about giving skilled caseworkers better tools — especially newer staff navigating an overwhelming policy landscape for the first time. We partnered with Georgetown University's Better Government Lab, Cornell University, and Amplifi to make this evaluation as thorough as possible, combining a randomized controlled trial with real-world pilot data and in-depth qualitative research.
