A new chapter for healthcare education is taking shape with the new Des Moines University campus in Des Moines, Iowa. The 350,000 SF campus includes four main buildings designed to support the next generation of medical professionals. Two academic buildings and a health and wellness facility utilize structural steel with composite metal deck construction, while the parking structure features post-tensioned concrete. The buildings are connected by enclosed pedestrian bridges, creating a cohesive and accessible campus environment. Several design features help define the project, including cantilevered floors at the academic buildings, a cantilevered track within the health and gym facility, and structures carefully integrated into the natural slope of the site. These elements required thoughtful coordination to balance performance, cost, and architectural vision. KPFF was involved early in the process, studying multiple construction systems to help determine the best approach for both budget and aesthetics. Our team designed and documented all four buildings simultaneously to support an ambitious construction schedule. After learning about site civil and structural design principles, students put their skills to the test, building towers to meet performance criteria and seeing how they held up on a shake table. Located in San Francisco’s Bayview–Hunters Point neighborhood, this new five‑story, 171,000 SF self‑storage project features four levels of light‑gage framed storage over a concrete podium, with production, distribution, and repair (PDR) space below.
