The Dark Urge

The Dark Urge is an Origin character in Baldur’s Gate 3. This guide provides everything you need to know about playing as The Dark Urge. Find out more below about how to create the character and what makes this Origin character a unique experience in BG3.

"You remember nothing but a path paved with blood. Unimaginable cruelty whispers to you from within. Can you escape it? Would you even want to?"

The Dark Urge’s Background

  • Haunted One: A wicked moment, person, or thing that cannot be slain by sword or spell haunts your mind and flickers in your peripheral vision. You carry it wherever your adventure takes you - or perhaps it carries you.

You cannot change The Dark Urge’s background at character creation.

What is The Dark Urge

Unlike the other six Origin characters, The Dark Urge is a fully customizable character and you can choose your class, race, gender, appearance, name, and more. This also means that The Dark Urge cannot be recruited as a companion, only as a playable hero.

The Dark Urge begins Baldur’s Gate 3 with memory loss after the opening scene. All that remains is an insatiable urge that tempts your thoughts and appears in your dialogue options. Don’t worry if you’re unsure about indulging the dark choices. BG3 developers made clear that whether you lean into the impulses or resist them is entirely up to you. In other words, there is variation in how you can play this Origin character.

The Dark Urge can even romance another character. Each relationship will vary depending on your choices.

Blood in Baldur’s Gate Background

Larian Studios, the developer of Baldur’s Gate 3, teased the reveal of The Dark Urge as an Origin character in their community-driven murder mystery event, Blood in Baldur’s Gate. Set around 15 years before the events in BG3, players were tasked with investigating a series of murders in the Lower City and track down the killer before it was too late. Read more about the web event here.
