Internet Movie Database (IMDb) first web version

5 August, 1993

The first web version of the Internet Movie database (IMDb) was announced by Rob Hartill on 5th August 1993. The database had originated as a Usenet posting that consisted of four lists and unix shell scripts for searching those lists.

IMDb.com was later bought by Amazon.com (primarily to promote their movie sales) and is now one of the most popular web sites in the world.
