Insert the possibility to the Android Browser to UPLOAD FILES! Or a hook
where 3rd party filemanager can attach theirselves.
This is so basic!
Apr 27, 2009
#1 defconoii
yea this amazes me that this isnt possible, I would like to upload files to drop.io
and my companies website, upload doc's to monster etc... Please add uploads from
sdcard/filesystem!

File uploads is a basic feature that would be very useful for all users. It would
be nice to upload an image of file to a forum or other similar sites.
Apr 29, 2009
#4 bigplrbear@gmail.com
enabling uploads in the browser for Android would not only make the platform more
popular and give it another one-up on the iPhone, it would allow me to post to 4chan!
Please enable uploads from the browser! :D

My understanding is that you don't have this working because you don't have a file
browser for the phone. That's *really* needs to be fixed

come on google, everyone knows we want to upload a pic taken on the phone, my mum is

#8 ctemplet...@gmail.com
I would love this feature but I suspect it was disbled to reduce the amount of data being sent over the
cell network. I suspect the only way this will be enabled is if it only works on wifi networks.

The code for the browser is in the git repository at
http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/packages/apps/Browser.git;a=tree . Maybe
someone can submit a patch for this? Opera supports file uploads, but has a terrible
UI for android.

Aug 5, 2009
#22 defconoii
Omg... android will be on dozens of devices soon and there isn't upload capability!? Damn symbian and
winmo devices are ahead in this crucial area when android is far superior. There should be at least a
patch available so we can patch then compile it ourselves. This lack of feature is a major lack of
fuctionality, christ opera mini on 3 year old devices that aren't even smart phones or have sd have file
upload! Come on HTC/Google this is badly needed, the browser isn't fully functional, this should have
been added way before adobe starting making flash for android....

Absolutely agree. Though, like others, I suspect this has something to do with reducing network loads.
Same reason AT&T still has not enabled MMS on the iPhone, at least not until the network upgrades are
complete.

#28 rik...@gmail.com
This comment is a great example, I could always attatch a logcat or something for a google code page
on an application I am trying to send a log to! But... alas, uploads are disabled, and my phone is on
airplane mode! :P

I concurr, even basic uploading would be appreciated.!

I'm really frustrated to experience that Google obviously "forgot" a file browser /
file upload possibility.

Since this thread is active for some time, it would be really helpful if we (the web
developers) received some official statement regarding this issue.
Something like: Will be fixed within weeks or "we don't want to fix this, go and code
an android app workaround (strong dislike)".

Thank you.
Sep 17, 2009
#33 thatal...@gmail.com
pazifikwelle, I think that's a fair comment and a reasonable request for some
information. The issue shows that it has been reviewed, and an owner has been assigned.

So, "c.." how about updating us as to where you are with this?

#40 Leden...@gmail.com
It's just silly that something so basic is missing, same goes to Gmail and attachments.
It is obvious that this was done ON PURPOSE, just like the lack of file browser. This
is a hard impact on usability and should be fixed as soon as possible.
Oct 10, 2009
#41 I.Punish...@gmail.com
With the new status set to Futurerelease I hope and guess it will come with 2.0 ?
Oct 10, 2009
#42 Rvanlaak
I think 'on purpose' sounds a bit too negative for an OS like Android. The Time to
Market is short, so they have to set priorities. Besides, what would you like to
upload from your mobile phone? The specific apps implement their own upload
functionality.

Second, I hope it'll be implemented in the 1.6 Donut release. Only to have a lot more
fun ;)
Oct 22, 2009
#43 LordAs...@gmail.com
i really think this is an epic fail on googles part. they dropped the ball on this
and now they dont know what to do. when using opera you can choose the files you want
to upload so how hard would it be to get the rest of it to work?
Oct 23, 2009
#44 orbanbal...@gmail.com
Listen, /maybe/ Google has already fixed this in Eclair (2.0) - the Droid and other
devices coming soon this year probably have this feature. But it's not public yet -
so there is no response in this bug. It's set to "FutureRelease" It can be 2.0 - and
that's not too far away. Just be patient.

File uploading is one of many browser features we didn't get to in the earlier releases. Because of the star

137 people who have starred this issue get an email.

I care about this as much as you all do, but simply posting "yes, please do it" is
not gonna do it.

*What you can do*
- Star this issue. That raises it up in the priority
- Note that this is already in a _future release_. Meaning that it _has been
implemented_ already, and will be released soon.

Android 2.0 (surprising):

No file uploads from browser (or built in file manager/browser)
No Google Docs
No bookmarks sync
No built in Picasa
No subscription music service supported (no native drm support -- minimal streaming
codecs support)
No fully featured voice command (with bluetooth support)
No built in Tasks and/or Notes support
And much more....

What's the model here ? The stripped down, locked in Apple iPhone concept ?

send files as attachments in email.
Dec 30, 2009
#69 R.Pruitt...@gmail.com
Now, a question that has not been answered by the developers... will this FutureRelease be coming to
the G1?
Dec 30, 2009
#70 ebom...@gmail.com
Even if not, you can be sure that Steve will include that into CyanogenMod once that
functionality is in (he already brought the 2.0 browser back to the G1, including
basic multi-touch support), and even if you don't want to install a new ROM, somebody
will most likely create a new build of the browser (since it's an external app, it
can be installed on top of the existing one).

Btw, "crippled" is a somewhat inflammatory word that implies that the functionality
had been there but has been removed. The problem however is just that it had never
been implemented in the first place. Poor choice of priorities in my opinion (and
that of many others), but not malevolence.

WHY IS THIS ISSUE CLOSED???? sick and tired of reporting issues to no avail. Droid is being
advertised to do what others can't. RIDICULOUS. Enable the uploads NOW. A basic feature
should not be missing nearly a year after its release. Every time I am asked about how I like
the Motorola Droid, I will state not to buy until thus basic feature is made available. FYI- I
work with Fortune 100 companies and their decision makers and their employees.......about
50k worth. If I like the product, everyone will know it. According to the timestamps on
these complaints, who must we escalate this to get the correction- NOT an enhancement,
done once and for all? Must we claim complaints remain resolved after documented
months of complaints and false advertising to entice us to purchase something consumers
lead to believe as advanced? Ticket priority should be critical or high. Note to all: write to
the President of Verizon and Motorola's corporate office as well as your state's Consumer
Affairs and Better Business Bureau!!!
Jan 17, 2010
#80 davekoch...@gmail.com
Google's problem is that like many other companies providing services these days,
they adhere to the 'God Doctrine' with regard to customer support by NEVER
acknowledging or responding to customer 'prayers', requests, complaints, or
inquiries. The problem with playing God, though, is that people will eventually lose
faith in you after a while if you don't empathize or acknowledge their existence by
communicating with them.

The fact is that even though we don't pay Google directly, we are giving them access
to all of our personal data which results in a treasure trove of targeted marketing
data and provides the healthy revenue stream that makes Google a profitable company.
In return for our personal intellectual property, God, you should see to it that our
basic needs are satisfied.

From my observations, there are some really basic and essential features/fixes that
the majority of users have been shouting for to the sound of chirping crickets over
the past year.

In this instance, though, I'm really not sure what Google's justification is for
omitting file uploads, since there are hundreds of LEGITIMATE reasons for needing to
upload a file from a mobile device. Flip the switch and present the user with a
dialog asking which installed file manager they'd like to use by default to choose
their upload file. Take it one step further and integrate Astro as the default
Android file manager. It's asinine to think that 95% of the Android users can't
handle a basic file management system after decades of personal computer use, but I
don't really think that's Google's justification for omission here...

This issue needs to be re-opened and addressed immediately. In the meantime, Some
suggested work-around apps for people who need to share a file via their Android device:

Bluetooth File Transfer for local transfers
File Social, a simple tool that allows you to upload and publish files via Twitter.
SwiFTP, turn your Android device into its own FTP server (also with download
funtionality)
Gravel Mail, an app specifically designed to send attachments from gmail.
Unfortunately it's paid though.

Good luck everyone. Keep applying the pressure collectively, and maybe the man behind
the curtain will do something.
...May a pestilence of rabid Androids befall me. =\

For the premiere web company to fail to provide a
feature that has been a browser standard since
1995 is simply unacceptable. I have never come
across a browser before that has left out such a
critical feature.

Write it. Now. 16 months is already too long.
Feb 1, 2010
#89 LandOfTr...@gmail.com
What other phone browser supports uploading? If you want to upload then there are plenty of apps
that allow it such as myspace, facebook, twitter, youtube and picasa. Its not as bad as most are making
it out to be and besides I'm sure many carriers don't want you uploading 100MB worth of stuff costly so
even if it was there it would still have limits also uploading on a phones data connection is funny you
might as well use a PC which most should have.
Feb 1, 2010
#90 animesh
@LandOfTrill: Firefox mobile supports it on the Nokia N900. The Opera browser on the
Android phone supports it (though it sucks on pretty much all other aspects).

I am currently using bucketupload to upload files to my personal web app. But that is
a very roundabout solution.

Google Devs: Please let us know which specific "Future Release" this is a part of.
Would appreciate a link to a more detailed roadmap than the one at
http://source.android.com/roadmap

Thanks,
Animesh

#91 LandOfTr...@gmail.com
I see your point but all in all I would say let's get the other possibly more important features that's
already there to work as needed since some features like copy & paste are horrible or don't exist unless
you have a keyboard device and finally in 2.0 Bluetooth file sharing was added and oddly enough it
looks and operates much like when the hiptop devices finally got it.

I think Google needs to get on the ball and I'm still using the outdated G1 since carriers such as tmobile
don't like high end devices so they get the Cliq, Behold 2 and others with hardware keyboards and poor
specs just with added memory and if the Nexus had a keyboard I would get it. The Music Player is also
bad and barebone and if we're ever allowed to post comments via the youtube app then it will be
perfect since its the only feature missing besides defaulting quality.
Feb 1, 2010
#92 Yes...@gmail.com
LandOfTrill,

I don't think the 186 people who stared this issue thinks it's un-important. We are
talking about a core html feature that is missing. It's absence breaks thousands of
existing web services and stifles the development of new webapps in areas like media-
sharing and cloud storage.

Without input type="file" you can't even attach a file to a post in this forum,
that's how bad it is.

The other issues you mention (except for copy/paste, which I agree is badly
implemented) aren't browser related. I'm suspect that the browser has its own team
within Google, fixing browser issues should have no impact on areas like the media
player and YouTube app.

If I read this thread correctly, there are about 100 upset users who are shocked such an important,
basic feature of any web browser in the "cloud storage" that is the modern internet.

I do read this is a "priority" fix as of 4 months ago. How can it be that difficult unless it is NOT a
priority? Am I giving the programmers involved more credit than their abilities can produce?

Has anybody found another browser that works properly?

Required fix.
Feb 16, 2010
#98 jon...@gmail.com
Opera Mini for Android supports file uploads:

http://my.opera.com/operamini/blog/2009/01/28/opera-mini-4-2-for-android-
final-version

The trouble is using a different browser is fine for personal use, but for developers
building web apps we need to work across all phones, and most people will only have
the default browser.

Maybe if Google can't figure out how to build an uploader themselves, they should
try to reverse enginer what Opera does? I find it hard to believe that with all the
engineering knowledge at Google something like this should have them so stumped.
Feb 25, 2010
#99 soundlin...@gmail.com
I'm thinking about buying an Android based phone, but this issue is so indignating
that I'm wondering if it's really worth it.

It's not that this issue couldn't be solved with workarounds a la install Opera Mini
or wait another year 'till it's implemented, it's just that, geez, we're @ version
2.1 on top-notch hardware, that this makes me wonder if there are other such
elemental features left unimplemented.

Or am I just missing something? I found out about this issue on the Emulator, so
might this be the reason?

Great, now that you've fixed this, pressure Verizon to release the 2.1 update
already. It's a shame that ANYONE should have to rely on the whims of their carriers
to decide whether and when it's financially advantageous to release important system
updates that fix glaring bugs. Google has given carriers & hardware vendors too much
control, resulting in fragmentation of the platform while driving more and more
people to the ROM scene.

Sure, go to filedropper.com and you'll see the notorious 'Uploads Disabled' message,
implying a conscious decision to KEEP uploads disabled. My understanding is that this
is a WebKit issue, but regardless, this is really a basic function. I'm sure someone
could get this working quite quickly if the will was actually there to fix it; it's
certainly not from lack of user requests...

further thoughts: there seems to be the ability to upload a selection of items in the built-in Mail app. Even this interface would take away some of the pain. Download Opera Mini 5 on any Android mobile phone and you can use that upload files on any website -- problem solved. :) It's free in Android's Marketplace app store.

Android's own web browser is defective and deficient. Google's OEM software is very poor. Google's software is almost as bad as Apple's iPhone/iPad software. I would reccomend NOT buying Android. Purchase a good Windows Mobile 7 device like the HTC HD2 or HTC Desire, or a smartphone by Sony Ericsson, or Nokia.

For storing and sharing files from any device, I strongly recomend using SkyDrive. Go to http://skydrive.live.com and upload files there. You can share any file, and there are superb options for sharing photos and videos. You can even edit MS Office files on there directly in your web browser with no software required. It's the future.

I am appalled by this! I moved from the IPhone to the Android platform thinking I was making a good move. The HTC Hero I received is slow, lags out regularly and I cannot upload as well. "Uploads Disabled" seems like a network bandwidth control measure to me as they couldn't possibly have had any other reason to do it.

Two boys in white sneakers..... Somehow, some suit somewhere has convinced them this will help their bottom line. It's obvious to me they have lost control of their empire to these suits.

The thousands of complaints I have found on the net about this that appear to date back 2 years or more tell me they are aware of it and have decided it's in their best interest to not enable it. If Google cared as they once did about their users, this would have been resolved by now.

After nearly 3 WHOLE DAYS as an Android user, I quit. I am going back to my trusty Blackberry. It may not be as fancy as the Android crippled HTC but least it works as advertised.

Upload ARE enabled in 2.2. Not perfectly, like in WinMo, but web pages no
longer say 'uploads disabled'. They say 'choose file'. When you click that
an options menu will pop up, and if you have a file explorer (astro, or
Linda, etc,) that will be in the options menu. That said, some sites still
won't upload. I've read it's because some use java format, some don't. Don't

I'm using an HTC desire running froyo, with the astro file manager, & upload is still crippled - I browse to a file on the SD card, & the system append a trailing / after the filename, causing the browser to think no file has been selected; the same problem occurs using other browser / file manager combinations such as dolphin browser & es file manager.

Answers along the lines of 'use an app', 'well the gallery will let you upload an image', & 'mobile carriers won't want people transferring that much data' are not acceptable - it's my phone using the account i'm paying for so I should be able to do what I like, how I like. & has been pointed out many times already, this is basic html functionality which has been acheivable on every other phone for years.

I just managed to upload a file to Multiupload via Dolphin Browser HD, but success seems to be dependent also on the file manager used to upload the files. Astro doesn't work, but the file manager that comes with CyanogenMod7 (OI File Manager) does.

Right now I'm wondering if it's just this finnicky combo of using the right browser and file manager, or if the CyanogenMod team has added this feature. Anyone care to test this browser/filemanager combo on stock Android?

- Installed firefox and astro file manager from market
- firefox prompts and asks to browse for a file via the various file manager
programmes installed
- choose Astro file manager and browse to the file to be uploaded
- "the upload then goes through"
Note other browsers ie Dolphin HD, Stock , Opera 11, Skyfire do not work and I could'nt figure out why. Hope this helps some people...

If the NATIVE file upload of android is impossible. Is there a way for our mobile web development team to allow users to upload their files? Any plugins/codes we can include in our pages to do file uploading tasks?

Because our target mobile users are android and iPhone users. Unluckily, iPhone's safari has disabled file upload also (but they have certain app/plugin users can install to manage file upload)

I have been considering buying an android OS smartphone for use business use. The lack of such a fundamental feature as the ability to readily upload a file to an email is massively disappointing and brings out the cynic in me. I cannot believe that the Google developers cannot readily provide this, which begs the question why they haven't. Come on guys, if you really have the users interests in mind give us this basic facility instead of only worrying about advancing the Google hegemony in cyberspace.

I've just purchased an Asus Transformer. It's one thing to have limited functionality like this on a phone, but on a tablet where the Web browser looks just like a desktop (including Flash!) it's bizarre that any 'File Upload' buttons have disappeared. It is a serious hole in functionality, especially because it is so useful to have a portable device that is also a camera: you should be able to snap a picture and upload much easier than any other device.

@comment # 296

I just uploaded a file via an input type=file field in Chrome on my Nexus 7.

The stupid idiotic thing is that I was only able to successfully do this successfully by choosing the file via the built in Gallery app.

The stupid gallery app isn't aware of the folder named _pdf_for_work located in /mnt/sdcard/ a.k.a. /storage/sdcard0/ or any other folders where I like to keep my files.

Therefore I am unable to upload the files I really need to upload. I can however upload any jpegs or videos that happen to be in a location that the Gallery is aware of, but not PDF files and presumably not a lot of other file types.

I do have many file browsing apps installed and they can all navigate to any location on my device but so far none of them have been able to pass the path of the file I select back to chrome for use in the file input field.

Wow, what happened to Google? I mean when Android first came out, it was fantastic from what I heard and I absolutely REFUSE to use an Apple product of any kind if I can help it. I'd rather not go back to Symbian (which is practically universally unsupported).

I've run into so many problems lately and these are problems that all have existed for at least 2 or more years and not even a word is issued by Google to address them, even though the support for fixing the shit is fucking massively overwhelming.

This is like, something that should be standard. Hell my old ass non-smart-phone Nokia could upload pictures, and that thing was a brick and didn't even have a camera and a very very very simplistic browser that made all websites look like Web 2.0... come on now, the mighty Google can't figure out these problems? Amateur programmers fix this shit in their sleep, unfortunately I can't root my phone so I don't have the option to have my phone actually fucking work.

How come that so many people complain about this issue (this thread was started in 2009!!!) and no one gives a single shit about it?

i've really gotten to like my android phones and tabs, its made the house website much easier to design since all devices can now use web browsers. But seriously every time i think I can include the mobiles in any upload page scheme, without building some gawd aweful "app" I am always disappointed. Behind the cute "candy" themed awe its so cute.. is still a corporation people.. Do they really care that we can't have that basic function, without some making an app.. no not really... cuz in every case its about 'google analytics' and google's desire to have as much data on us at any given moment.. I loved Waze, the Nav/social app... google bought them up too... sure they can use apps to find your phone ... but now that they have Waze in their stable.... They know right where Ya are.... I didn't even finish the article about the Waze take over before I deleted every trace of the app.. as long as we buy the devices... they'll simply do as they wish..
