• As the state museum of natural history, UMNH fosters an understanding of science, promotes the preservation of biological and cultural diversity, preserves collections in trust for future generations, celebrates Utah’s native peoples and cultures, and showcases Utah’s unique environments.

• Offers courses in museum studies through various academic departments, including a general-education course on dinosaurs taught by a museum paleontologist, as well as internships and work-study positions
• The UMNH has begun construction on a new 17-acre site on the high bench that marks the shoreline of ancient Lake Bonneville and offers breathtaking views in all directions. The building will rest on a series of terraces that step up the hill and lay along the contours of the site, with minimal disruption to the adjacent natural landscape. In addition, running and hiking trails in the immediate area are preserved and enhanced. When the site opens in 2011, it will be named the Utah Museum of Natural History at the Rio Tinto Center. The new building’s facade of horizontal bands of copper of various heights will emulate geological stratification, recalling Utah’s geological and mineralogical history.

• Includes over 100 acres of natural areas and 18 acres of formal gardens featuring floral displays, waterfalls and fountains, hiking trails, and walking paths. Year-round activities include classes, workshops, festivals, children’s programs, concerts, and tours.

Kingsbury Hall

• Performing arts center that presents national and international touring companies, musical concerts and performances by the College of Fine Arts opera company.
• Kingsbury Hall has over 150 performances and attendance exceeding 165,000 annually.
• Ticket office provides ticketing services for Libby Gardner Concert Hall, Marriott Center for Dance, and Studio 115 and Babcock theatres. Operating hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Ticket office closes one half-hour after Kingsbury Hall performances begin.
• Listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Renovation in 1995 included state-of-the-art stage house, spacious restrooms, and elegant plaza.

Pioneer Theatre Company

A fully professional theatre operating on a “League of Resident Theatres” contract with Actor’s Equity Association, Pioneer Theatre Company produces Broadway-quality plays and musicals at the Roy W. and Elizabeth E. Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre.

• Produces seven shows per year–five plays and two musicals–from September through May. More than 110,000 patrons enjoy the theatre performances each season.
• Casts actors at the top of their profession, both locally and from New York City. The theatre also builds its own sets and costumes, utilizing the country’s most talented designers.

David P. Gardner Hall

• David P. Gardner Hall has been the home of the School of Music since 1954. The elegant neo-classical building has recently undergone a complete renovation resulting in a dramatically enlarged and well-appointed facility.
• Libby Gardner Concert Hall, located in David Gardner Hall, features a 60-rank pipe organ, adjustable acoustics, and choir seating for 200 performers.
