Hiring in Defense tech is tough. You have to balance pipelining candidates ahead of time whilst navigating contracts and funding. Starting fresh when you win a contract, you'll be behind the 8 ball, miss out on candidates and limit your ability to deliver. Pipeline candidates too early, you can't put offers out and may lose those candidates to competition (or their current company might have a new project for them).

You need to show recruiters how your existing experience directly translates to their secure, mission-critical environments. Here is actionable advice to help you secure your next role in aerospace or defence: 1. 🔑 Master the Acronyms and Technical Keywords Recruiters use highly specific terms to filter candidates. If your CV doesn't have the right industry vocabulary, you'll be missed, regardless of your skill level. For Software/Embedded Roles: Highlight specialised compliance and frameworks: DO-178C, MIL-STD-810, RTOS, Embedded C/C++, VHDL, FPGA, or Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). For Data/Intelligence Roles: Use terms that show defence context: OSINT, GEOINT, ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), Threat Fusion, or C-UAS/C-sUAS. For Manufacturing/Engineering: Mention compliance and efficiency standards: Lean Six Sigma, NPI (New Product Introduction), ISO 9001, or Supply Chain Resilience. 2. 🛡️ Showcase Your 'Security Mindset' The defence sector prioritises security above all else. You must demonstrate that you understand and value security protocols, even if you don't have military experience. Manufacturing Example: "Applied Lean Six Sigma methodologies to manufacturing processes, resulting in a 20% reduction in defect rate, directly improving the reliability of mission-critical components." 4. 🌐 Emphasise International/Cross-Functional Collaboration Defence projects are often multinational and multidisciplinary. Highlight your ability to work across teams and borders. Detail experience collaborating with international partners (e.g., FVEY, NATO allies) or cross-functional teams (e.g., Engineers collaborating with Quality Assurance or R&D).
