Ed Grimes shared thisOne of the few times of day that I am able to not think about work is in that first thirty minutes after my alarm rouses me from bed, not from sleep I should point out, my over-active mind has usually done that at least an hour or so beforehand. With a much needed coffee by my side, I take half an hour to read. I won't have time later in the day and I will certainly be too tired when I get back into bed at night! This half an hour is important to me. The rest of the family are asleep, even the dog isn't stirring. This is when I escape, think of other things and, often, get some inspiration. If you haven't read A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, then I highly recommend it. A magical book that, in my opinion, is better read than watched. Other opinions are available. This quote from the book struck me the moment I read it. I tried to tell my wife Flee Chavasse about it but couldn't recall the exact words. Luckily, a version of the quote is repeated again in the final pages. As founders we navigate challenges daily, taking a few minutes to celebrate a win before tackling the next hurdle full on, with the cycle seemingly repeating itself on loop. For me, these words have real meaning, we can try to ignore the challenges and the obstacles, we can hope they will go away (they don't) or we can ask for help, formulate a plan, put it into practice and master our circumstances. A much more effective approach in my view! Ed Grimes shared thisAfter less than a week in France, the home of Voltaire, Camus and Descartes, I have returned feeling somewhat philosophical. The French call the sunflower le tournesol, so called because it turns to face the sun. As I ran through the fields near home this morning, it got me thinking. The sunflower turns to face the sun, to take in the sun’s nourishment, to help it to flourish and grow. If, one day, the sunflower decides it will no longer turn towards the sun, deciding instead to face the same way it had at the end of the day before, it would, presumably, cease to grow, cease to develop and eventually start to wither. As I am prone to do when running, I try my best to relate what I see, as I plod along the tracks, to a commercial setting. It helps take my mind off my aching legs. Often you’ll see among a field of sunflowers, a few plants standing taller amongst their peers. Are these the plants that turned in step with the sun, never missing a second to ingest the sun’s energy, maximising its growth and maintaining its relevance? As I reflect on the last year at Talent Unlimited, we too have experienced the tall sunflowers, those early adopters who have been quick to understand and leverage the power of our product. Now, it feels like the rest of the sunflowers are turning, realising the potential of what we can deliver and understanding the benefit it can have on their growth. In my short week away, I worked everyday. If I was still a salary man I would have seen that as a disaster. As an AI start-up founder I saw that as something of a win. I returned home last night thinking, the sun is moving, the question is whether you are prepared to move with it? Ed Grimes shared thisWe had a lot of fun at this morning's event. Big thanks to everyone who took part on the panel, Andrea Wareham, Gemma Fitzhugh and Ed Godwin. A very big thank you to Brandon Ware for doing a great job of chairing the discussion. Thanks too to James McClean and Nick Hope for all the integration work with the Zoho platform. Pulling an event like today together takes a lot of effort. Thanks to Liam Murphy, Malia Westlake, Joshua Okyere and Matthew Hutchins for all the work on pulling together a guest list. Finally, thanks to everyone who attended. Looking forward to the upcoming demos! NoBa CapitalEd Grimes shared thisGreat to see our Talent Unlimited team bring together some brilliant people for a conversation about the future of hiring. I had the chance to be part of the team behind our Talent Unlimited Deloitte & Zoho event at Deloitte’s London HQ, bringing together people from across recruitment, talent and HR to talk about where the industry is heading. A few things that stood out to me from the conversations: 🔹The call from job candidates for interaction and feedback while job hunting. Everyone is over being left in the dark. And recruiters and hirers have a chance to make themselves stand out by having systems the provide some form of feedback 🔹 AI isn’t the end of recruitment as we know it. It’s changing where recruiters spend their time taking away some of the repetitive work and creating more space for the parts that actually require people. 🔹 The technology is only as good as the way you use it. There’s a big difference between adopting AI because everyone else is and actually integrating it into your hiring process in a way that delivers value. 🔹 Humans are still the backbone of recruitment. We still want to meet people we still want to interact with each other. But with so many people applying for jobs these days, there’s ways to do that fairly, effectively and efficient Big thanks to everyone who joined us, and to Talent Unlimited, Deloitte and Zoho teams for making it happen. Definitely a space I’m excited to be working in. #Recruitment #Hiring #HRTech #TalentAcquisition #FutureOfWork

Ed Grimes liked thisEd Grimes liked this✨ The women who matter most are not always the ones who agree with you. They are the ones who support you enough to challenge you and stay beside you as you grow. My final #EmpowerHer spotlight celebrates three women who have been part of this journey for a long time: their support and challenge have been equally valuable, and each has helped shape the way I lead, build and keep moving forward. 💛 Lorraine Traynor - I knew you long before NoBa Capital or EmpowerHER by NoBa existed. Your kindness and professionalism has taught me that success does not require becoming someone else, you can achieve it by working in a way that feels true to you. So when it was time to build the team at NoBa, there was nobody else I wanted beside me. You understand that hiring is not simply about filling a role; it is about finding the right person for the culture, the journey and the people already building it. Pauline Hughes - you are one of the kindest souls I know. You helped me understand that speaking with confidence does not mean having every answer but being clear about what you believe in and what you are trying to build. You understand both the organisation being built and the human being unexpectedly asked to become its public face. You cheerlead almost everything I do, challenge me when I need it and will always be someone I want around my table. 🤝 Kristen Weatherby - we went from strangers to acquaintances, then collaborators and somewhere along the way, true friends. We have worked together to build impact and drive change, but it is knowing that you will stand beside me beyond the work that means the most. A true friend is not someone who only appears for the milestones. It is someone whose presence feels steady throughout everything in between, and that is difficult to find. 💜 Ladies, thank you for supporting me, challenging me and helping me become a stronger version of myself. I am so grateful that you have been part of this journey and so proud to have you as Founding Voices. As this spotlight series is coming to an end (1 post left), I am reminded that EmpowerHER by NoBa has never been built by one woman. It has been shaped by every conversation, every challenge, every act of encouragement and every woman who chose to believe in what it could become. ✨ To every Founding Voice I have celebrated: thank you for helping turn an idea into a community. 👉🏻 And to everyone following the journey: look around your own table. Who supports you enough to cheer for you, challenge you and help you grow? Make sure she knows and make sure your table continues to grow - you never know when you might need them. #EmpowerHer #FoundingVoices #WomenSupportingWomen #FemaleFriendship #WomenWhoLead #AuthenticLeadership #CultureByDesign #FounderResilience #StrongerTogether #CommunityMatters

Ed Grimes liked thisEd Grimes liked thisWhy Harvey Chose Experience Over Appearances One short scene explains leadership better than most books. It happens in Suits, Season 5, Episode 2. ⚠️ Harvey Specter is hiring a new secretary. He scans the waiting room. Young. Polished. Familiar profiles. He walks past all of them. Instead, he hires Gretchen Bodinski. No hesitation. When asked about her background, she says: “Twenty-four years of spring.” That’s the moment the decision is made. Not because of charm. Not because of image. Because experience removes friction. Later, Gretchen calls it out directly. Harvey didn’t want distraction. He wanted competence, clarity, and zero ambiguity. This is a lesson many leaders learn late. Performance comes from trust. Trust comes from capability. Capability comes from time under pressure. In high-stakes roles, optics fade fast. Execution stays. That’s true in law. In finance. In leadership. The strongest hires don’t need managing. They create space for better decisions. Post credit: Suits — Season 5, Episode 2, “Compensation” Characters: Harvey Specter, Gretchen Bodinski PS: When pressure is real, leaders choose experience every time.

Ed Grimes liked thisEd Grimes liked this🎉 Today marks six years since we started Love Ventures with a simple belief: the UK has no shortage of brilliant Seed-stage founders, and they deserve investors who back them with conviction. We seemed to have made a habit of posting these on our birthday so here goes: 📈 We've grown to over £25m AUM, backed by 260+ investors across our EIS funds 🚀 We built the UK's first 'VC within an EIS wrapper', with full FCA authorisation to go with it 🏢 We've backed 39 companies across Fintech, Future of Work and Consumertech, with 50+ individual investments made as we've doubled down on our winners 📅 In the last 12 months alone, we've backed 7 new portfolio companies across the UK and made follow-on investments into 5 more 🌐 We've co-invested alongside 80+ VC funds and institutional investors 🤝 48 new investors joined us in the last year 🎤 We hosted 20+ events and gatherings for our community over the last 12 months, from our flagship London Live events to Slush/WebSummit dinners, to breakfasts, founder workshops, dinners, padel and everything inbetween 💼 Our team has grown from a two-person idea to a full team of investment professionals and advisors ✅ Our first fund exit: Konfir was acquired by Experian None of this happens without the founders who let us back them, the investors who back us, and a team that shows up every day loving the work. Here's to the next six years...we're just getting started! #VentureCapital #UKStartups #SeedInvesting #LoveVentures

Ed Grimes liked thisYesterday I had the pleasure of hosting a panel discussion on "What We Wish We Had: How AI is Changing Hiring for the Operator" alongside some fantastic contributors from Deloitte, Talent Unlimited, Zoho and the wider talent community. A big thank you to Andrea Wareham, Ed Grimes, Ed Godwin, Gemma Fitzhugh and James McClean for helping bring the session to life. What stood out to me wasn't actually the technology discussion. It was how quickly the conversation moved into some of the broader challenges organisations are wrestling with today: • How do you identify quality when application volumes continue to rise? • How do you create a great candidate experience at scale? • How do you balance speed, consistency and human judgement? • How do workforce expectations continue to evolve in a hybrid and increasingly mobile world? One of the most interesting themes was that while AI undoubtedly has a role to play, the discussion repeatedly came back to people. Better processes. Better judgement. Better data. Better experiences for candidates. The technology is important, but the businesses that will get the most value from it are those that use it to augment good decision making and are clear on what good outcomes look like. It was also great to see representatives from a range of organisations join the discussion, including talent, HR and people leaders from scaling businesses, private organisations and global enterprises, all facing many of the same workforce challenges. Thanks again to everyone who joined us, contributed to the discussion and challenged the panel with some excellent questions. Looking forward to continuing the conversations that started yesterday.
