Handling sales taxes in-house is costing you more than you know.  Every new product, every purchase from a new geo introduces operational drain and a new layer of responsibility away from game development:  • Staying on top of shifting regulations across markets  • Managing reporting, filing, and audit exposure  • Hiring finance folks with specialist expertise  • Pulling internal teams into decisions with data that changes across country, city, sometimes even street What starts as a finance function becomes cross-functional friction. The impact isn't cost. It's drag. So leading studios change where the responsibility sits. Not by managing tax more efficiently. But by removing it from their sphere of responsibility entirely. Because the best payment partners for studios don’t only scale gaming monetization. They absorb the entire transaction and operational burden, so studios can stay focused on building great player experiences. They operate quietly as 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 - 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼.  That’s what offloading tax complications actually means in payments.

The era of "D2C to avoid the fee" is over. Google’s announcement of their new fee structure and changes the entire D2C calculation. Once they go live, even if you use third-party payments, developers are on the hook for around 15% in service fees in many cases. The only real difference is whether you also pay Google’s additional billing fee . And that's before any vendor fees. (and let's not even start with some of the hidden fees we've seen in the gaming payment niche.) Which means the value proposition of implementing "D2C for cheaper payments" gets much weaker. My response? Good. The strongest reason for D2C was never the fee savings. The benefits around building and owning the relationship with your players, player-first D2C building long term recurring revenue, payments as a growth lever are the real reason to do D2C. Your webstore is the step in having a strong, direct relationship with your players. Google's shift not only historically changed the economics of mobile games, it forced the spotlight on where the true, hidden value of D2C really lies.

We've been building something for a while. On March 10th at GDC Festival of Gaming, we're finally letting it out of the room. If you're heading there and you run a community server like Hypixel Inc, a multiplayer mod like CFX.re, or you're building in the UGC space (whether it is Minecraft, FiveM, GMod, Ark or anything else)... ReadyM is hosting an important meetup at Modernist in San Francisco - co-hosted with Overwolf/Tebex and Nodecraft - for the people who actually run the internet's most interesting gaming communities. Server owners. Multiplayer modding teams. UGC Operators & builders. No keynotes. Just an open bar and about 40+ people who speak the same language - and a reveal we've been sitting on for months. 📅 March 10th, 6–8 PM 📍 Modernist, 139 Steuart St, San Francisco Spots are limited and subject to approval. RSVP here → https://luma.com/fin0mrl2
