We all know that Boeing has been unable to really challenge the Airbus A321neo. I think it's difficult to undersell just how big of an issue this is; with almost 8,000 sales, the A321neo on its own has outsold the entire 737 MAX family, and it's the most popular commercial aircraft variant of all time by a wide margin. They're also expensive, and Airbus has been able to extract even more profits from the program through the A321LR and A321XLR, variants that didn't cost that much to develop but which sell for a hefty premium. Airbus is making money hand over fist with the A321neo while Boeing has sold a few hundred 737 MAX 9s.

The 737 MAX 10 is supposed to be coming later this year, and I find it to be a much bigger deal than I think people are giving it credit for. Boeing is promising that per-seat costs will be competitive or even better than the A321neo (which was always the main fault with the 737-900/MAX 9). The 737 MAX 10 has already received over 1,400 orders, despite the fact that the plane has been delayed by over six years, the MAX was grounded, and we had COVID. If it had been offered earlier and came out on time, then I don't think we would have seen carriers like KLM or Korean Air order the A321neo. Both airlines were loyal 737 customers but went with the A321neo surely in part because the plane was on sale before the MAX 10 and you can actually get it.

We've already seen loyal 737 operators like Ryanair order the MAX 10, and I think once it's certified, it will open the doors for sales from more 737 operators that need a large, economical narrowbody. Before the plane was launched, the A321neo was the only option, and right now, that aircraft is the only one that you can get with a sure timeline. But once it's certified, the MAX 10 will be a plane that does the same job as an A321neo but fits within a 737 operator's fleet, and I think it will be game-changing. While the MAX 10 will never earn the raw sales numbers of the A321neo, I think that you will see much more competitive campaigns and the two will be largely at parity with one another in terms of yearly orders.

Do you agree with my take that the 737 MAX 10 is in for a very bright future, or do you think that it's merely a stop gap that will prevent Boeing from losing some customers, but will never truly be a market darling like its rival?

      The -10 is clearly going to be a well-selling plane, well-suited for the US market


      But I doubt it will ever match the A321 success as, despite its imminent certification, and the -7 certification, the MAX orders this year, upto July 31st, stand at a meager 286 (gross) vs 743 (net) for the A32X NEO family, of which 529 (net) for the A321 NEO alone

      Doesn’t the MAX 10 has a slightly smaller capacity and shorter range than the A321neo??

      So the MAX 10 will offer cheaper operating costs than the A321neo on short haul flights but the A321neo is more versatile thanks to its range so both aircraft have their advantages and disadvantages.
